Samsung is on a roll these days – apart from their excellent flagship S10 series, they have introduced a range of A-series phones. Thanks to increased competition, Samsung is also becoming very aggressive with pricing, which is why the A50 starts at Rs 19,999.
This is the company’s first ID series offering with an in-display fingerprint scanner. But hold your excitement – it doesn’t use the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner of the S10, but the conventional optical scanner used by other brands (like OnePlus, Vivo, Oppo). While the competition uses fourth-generation in-display sensors, the A50’s fingerprint sensor feels like first-generation technology. It is slow to recognize the fingerprint and fails to work on 50% of the tie. Samsung pushed a software update to improve speed/accuracy, but we only saw an ergonomic improvement. In comparison, the face unlock works smoothly – much better than what we’ve seen on the range’s flagship phones.
The A50 has a 6.4-inch super aoled Full HD screen with Infinity U style. The screen is a pleasure to read content and impresses with thin bezels, high brightness and deep black colors. However, it uses the older Gorilla Glass 3 for screen protection, which is a disappointment. We liked the solid build quality of the device despite the polycarbonate back panel. The back panel is super shiny and reflects light in all the colors of the rainbow. As usual, the glossy finish is prone to smudges and fingerprints.

Performance is where the phone confused us. It has Samsung’s Exynos 9610 octa-core processor along with 4/6GB RAM and 64GB storage. Our review was the 4GB RA version and it can play games like PUBG and Asphalt smoothly. But when it comes to performance, we were surprised to see random lag and slowness. This applies to basic tasks like swiping left to the Bixby screen, switching between running apps, editing photos, and even closing apps to return to the notch screen. It becomes visible if there are more than 10 apps running in the background – our theory is that there is no optimization between the new Exynos chip and the OS. Battery life is the phone’s strong point – we were able to get close to a day and a half of backup regularly. In addition, there is support for fast charging and a fast charger is included in the box.
The Galaxy A50 has a triple rear camera setup that gives great results in daylight. The images have a good amount of detail and the caera interface is smooth. This is a wide lens that is excellent for shooting landscapes and architecture. The third lens is a depth sensor that helps with live focus and provides good edge detection. Portrait photos came out great with a fair amount of bokeh, but there are phones with much better cameras available in this price range, like the Poco F1. The problem is that in low light the images suffer from soft details, and we often ended up with blurry images. We also didn’t like the fact that video recording is limited to full HD resolution in the standard caera app, and that you can’t switch between the standard and wide-angle lenses while shooting. The 25P front camera doubles as a rear camera – great photos in daylight, but lacks detail when used in low light.

But at Rs20k, Samsung Galaxy A50 is a tough sell. The Poco F1 offers much better performance with its affordable Snapdragon 845 processor and even scores highly in camera and battery performance. The Redi Note 7 Pro delivers a better processor, premium glass design, superior 48P dual back and comparable battery life at just Rs 13,999. If you’re stuck with the Sasung brand, you can get the Galaxy 30 at Rs 14,999 with a similar super aoled display, triple caera setup and a massive 5000Ah battery.

On the Android side, the most successful smartphone in 2019 was Samsung’s Galaxy A50, followed by the Galaxy A10. Next, OPPO A5 and Galaxy A20 rounded out the top ten smartphones of the year. Now, it is important to note here that these top 10 models accounted for only 15% of the total smartphone sales. While they all had high concentrations, the large number of models from Samsung, Huawei and other brands gives them a higher market share overall.
However, Apple is the most impressive part of this report. The company’s more affordable iPhone XR was the best-selling smartphone in the world in 2019, followed by the iPhone 11, which was only on the market for 4 months of the entire year. Apple also completely dominated the US market, with all five top models being iPhones.

Samsung is bringing three of its new mid-range phones to the US this summer, the Galaxy A50, A20 and A10E. The phones start at $179.99 for the A10E, $249.99 for the A20 and $349.99 for the A50. The A50 will be available On June 13, with the release of the A20 and A10E which will arrive “in the coming weeks”.
With its high price point, the Galaxy A50 unsurprisingly has the highest specs of the three devices. It has a triple camera setup on the back consisting of a 25-megapixel main sensor, a 123-degree wide-field lens and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The A20 has a dual camera setup consisting of a 13-megapixel sensor and a 5-megapixel ultra-wide camera, while the A10E has a single 8-megapixel camera. Both the A50 and A20 have 4,000 mAh batteries, while the A10Es are slightly smaller at 3,000 mAh.
All three phones have one of Samsung’s new Infinity displays, each with a minimal screen notch. The A50 has a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, while both the A20 and A10E have 6.4-inch and 5.83-inch Infinity-V displays respectively.
Absent from Samsung’s announcement was any mention of the other newer A-series phones, including the Galaxy A80, A70 and A30, all of which launched this year but so far haven’t been released in the US. The Galaxy A80 is a particularly interesting device, with
