Samsung Galaxy A50 Review With Pros And Cons
The Samsung Galaxy S50 is something you don’t often see from a company: a very good budget phone. In fact, the $349/£309 triple camera 6.4-inch Galaxy A50 is one of the best Android phones for the money.
The Galaxy A50 is extremely competitive for its price, with these key features, as well as the strong performance of the processor developed in-house by Samsung. And it actually looks pretty strong for the price.
Once upon a time, we immediately called it our sub-$400 phone. But today, Samsung has the unfortunate task of following Google’s Pixel 3a. How does the Galaxy A50 compare? Pretty good.
After initially being released on Verizon, Sprint and US Cellular, you can now buy the unlocked version of the Galaxy A50 for the same price of $349. One of the best unlocked phones, this A50 model works on all networks that allow users to bring their own phones. Best Buy is offering an unlocked A50, and if you activate the device on Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint when you buy it from a retailer, you can save $50.

Those who prefer to go through their carrier and opt for a payment plan can also save some money, since Verizon is running a promotion where you can get the device for $10 a month for 24 months, for a total of $240. US Cellular charges $11.66 a month when you buy the Galaxy A50 on the carrier’s 30-month payment plan.
In the UK you can get a SIM-free Galaxy A50 for around £309, with Samsung UK, Amazon UK and Carphone Warehouse all selling the phone for prices within pennies.
The A50 is only available in black, with 64GB of built-in storage and 4GB of RAM. (Samsung sells alternative phone configurations in other markets, but that’s all US buyers get.) However, there’s a microSD slot that accepts cards up to 512GB in size, allowing you to significantly expand that built-in space for apps, photos, and music if you so choose.
With a 6.4-inch screen, thin bezels and a U-shaped notch that prioritizes the front camera, the Galaxy A50 could be mistaken for a flagship phone.

The A50 isn’t the only budget Galaxy to appear this year. We also got the $249/£169 Galaxy A20 and $179/£139 Galaxy A10e, on a range of carriers beyond Verizon and Sprint, including AT&T, T-Mobile, the US. Cellular and Xfinity Mobile from Comcast.
With a 6.4-inch screen, thin bezels and a U-shaped notch that prioritizes the front camera, the Galaxy A50 could be mistaken for a flagship phone. It’s only when you take a closer look at this device that the small cost-cutting measures begin to reveal themselves.
I wouldn’t say that the A50 feels as cheap as its price might suggest, although it’s clear that it can’t compare to Samsung’s S-series products in terms of build quality. The iridescent, pseudo-grey back sparkles in subtle rainbow waves, but attracts more fingerprints than the Gorilla Glass-clad S10. Also, the wavy and distorted reflections can’t help but give away the phone’s polycarbonate composition.
The Galaxy A50 is a hair thinner than the Galaxy S10 Plus and also noticeably lighter, thanks to an all-plastic construction that has replaced the aluminum and glass of the S10 Plus.

However, Samsung managed to cram a gigantic 4,000 mAh battery into the A50’s thin frame, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom side, next to the USB Type-C port. Perhaps even more impressive is the A50’s in-display fingerprint recognition — a feature that hasn’t yet made its way to premium phones.
It’s quite admirable that Samsung has packed a 6.4-inch Full-HD+ Super AMOLED panel into a $349/£309 phone. But what’s really impressive is how good the A50’s display is.
The optical scanner in the Galaxy mid-range is not technically as safe as the ultrasound system that supports the S10, and you will have to put up with a palpable delay that is not present in traditional capacitive sensors. However, it proved reliable and easy to use in our testing – definitely a win for such a cheap device.
On the other hand, the A50’s lack of IP waterproofing and stereo speakers are very convenient given the low price of the phone. At least the single speaker in the background gets loud enough.

Lately, we have seen phones with OLED displays drop in price. The $499 Moto Z4 (not available in the UK) and the $399/£399 Pixel 3a are notable examples, although with the Galaxy A50, Samsung has significantly undercut both models.
It’s amazing that Samsung has packed a 6.4-inch, Full-HD+ Super AMOLED panel into a $349/£309 phone. But what’s really impressive is how good the A50’s display is.
It’s not as strong as the one in Google’s recently launched mid-range device, as the Pixel 3a packs its pixels a bit closer through a smaller bezel. But the A50 excels when it comes to brightness, while also offering a choice of display modes that let you adjust the colors to your liking. It looks like a flagship display, and it’s in a device that costs a third of the price.
Watching a trailer for the upcoming movie Ford vs. Ferrari, the side of Ken Miles’ iconic blue and white Ford GT40 glowed under the Daytona lights with an intensity the Pixel 3a couldn’t replicate. With a full-screen peak brightness of 574 nits versus Google’s 401 nits, the A50 wasn’t far behind the S10’s score of 611 nits. And because the A50’s panel is OLED, the glow of Ferrari’s yellow headlights against the moonlit sky over Le Mans is mesmerizing in a way it never would be on a similarly priced LCD phone.

The A50 received high marks for color gamut coverage. The screen with 192.8% of the sRGB space again split the difference between the Pixel 3a (182.3%) and the much more expensive Galaxy S10 (208.2%). The Delta-E color accuracy test proved less encouraging, with the A50’s 0.74 not quite as good as the Pixel 3a’s 0.18 (numbers closer to zero are better).
For what it’s worth, to my eye things didn’t look wrong, just more saturated. But again, Samsung offers alternative profiles in settings that are more realistic than the default Dynamic setting, so your mileage may vary.
If anyone’s camera could compete with Google in the mid-range, you’d think it would be Samsung. And the Galaxy A50’s spec sheet certainly backs up that claim – this phone has not one, not two, but a whopping three lenses on the back, even though it’s about a third of the price of Samsung’s other triple-lens phone, the Galaxy S10.
This camera trifecta consists of a 25-megapixel, ƒ/1.7 main lens, an ƒ/2.2 ultra-wide 8MP lens, and another 5MP sensor used only for depth measurement. The front of the phone houses another 25MP camera for sharp selfies – or so you hope.

I don’t know if it’s Samsung’s image processing software or what, but the A50’s photo was slightly blurrier than the Pixel 3a in every scene I shot with both phones, even though on paper the A50’s main camera shoots twice as many megapixels.
Take, for example, this window seat scene in our New York office. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the A50’s attempt, but the more you zoom in, the more those details—the specular lights bouncing off the plant pot, the texture of the leaves, and the gold text on the spine of the sky-blue book—start to blend in.
Therefore, the resulting shots from the A50 have the same number of pixels as those of Google’s device – indicating that the megapixels were compressed or squeezed behind the scenes, perhaps to lighten the final result. There’s no doubt that the Galaxy’s rendering of this cloudy outdoor scene is brighter than the Pixel’s, but again, it comes at the expense of sharpness. The bark of trees, chips underneath and glass panels on distant buildings are harder to make out in the A50 shot.
Unfortunately, the results when the depth sensor comes into play are much less impressive. My partner Jorge’s face is blurry and smooth in the Galaxy sample, even though the beauty features have been turned off. In addition, the more withdrawn perspective does not work here – I prefer the point of view of the Pixel 3a, which captures the foreground and background closer, as you would expect from a professional portrait.

Although the Pixel 3a regularly beats it, the A50’s camera can hold its own in ideal conditions. However, this is certainly not the case when things get dark, since Samsung did not give this cheaper device the same Bright Night.
