Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: Flagship Flash At A Mid Range Price
There isn’t much new in terms of the Samsung Galaxy A50’s look and feel. When we took a look at the Galaxy M20 (Review), one of Samsung’s first aggressive pushes, we explained its overall feel and how it breaks away from the company’s previous models. Likewise, the Galaxy A50s could easily be mistaken for some phones from today’s top brands, no matter which way you look at it.
The front of this phone is all screen, with a small camera on top (Samsung calls this ‘Infinity-U’ design). The screen has rounded corners and a fairly thick bezel, while the sides and top are narrower. The edges are slightly curved, and we note with interest that this is one of the few phones we’ve reviewed recently that doesn’t come with a plastic screen protector, which we don’t mind, or even appreciate.
On the back, we have a touch of personality that Samsung wants to show – an off-center geometric pattern of crossed lines in different colors in each segment. There are three options: Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet – our review unit is the black version, but the colors on the back are different shades of grey.
Fortunately, this design isn’t too prone to picking up dirt and fingerprints, but like the Galaxy A50’s mirror, you’ll need to wipe it down a few times a day to keep it looking good. There’s a slight prismatic effect under certain lighting, though it’s much more subtle than the psychedelic reflections we’ve seen from this phone before.
Samsung Galaxy A50 Test
At the bottom is a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack and a single speaker. The tray on the left has slots for two nano-SIMs, as well as a micro SD card. The power and volume buttons are all on the right, with the top blank.
At 166g and 7.7mm thick, the Galaxy A50s is amazing to handle and live with. You may have to reach a bit to reach the top of the 6.4-inch screen, but otherwise we had no complaints. The first thing you’ll see when you turn on this phone is the crisp and bright Super AMOLED display. It’s 6.4 inches, but if you measure using the rounded corners, that shrinks to about 6.2 inches. The resolution is Full HD+ 1080×2340. There is a fingerprint sensor placed at the top for the front camera.

Samsung has used its own Exynos 9611 octa-core processor, which appears to be a slight upgrade over the Exynos 9610 featured in the Galaxy A50. You get four 1.74GHz ARM Cortex-A53 cores and four 2.3GHz Cortex-A73 cores, as well as Mali-G72 graphics. This chip has CPU, GPU and LTE capabilities, but supports higher camera resolution.
That brings us to a big new feature of this phone, the 48-megapixel f/2 main rear camera. It is accompanied by an 8-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera has also been upgraded to 32 megapixels and f/2 aperture.
There are two variants of this phone, but both have 128GB of storage. The only difference is that you get 4GB RAM for Rs 22,999 or 6GB RAM for Rs 24,999. It’s similar to what the Samsung Galaxy A50 offers and we don’t think it’s necessary to have two options. similar If you don’t use a lot of apps and heavy games, you will notice a big difference.
The battery is quite large at 4000 mAh, and although you get 10W charging out of the box, it can do 15W fast charging. It has dual Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC, FM radio.
Samsung Galaxy A50s First Impressions
Our unit came with version 1.5 of Samsung’s One UI software, running on Android 9 with the August 2019 security update. While One UI, designed primarily for large-screen phones, looks clean and modern, we’re not fans of large icons and wide spaces. Fortunately, you can adjust the size and density of the home and app drawer screens through their settings.
There’s a lot of space in the menu, and everything feels like the big screen isn’t being used optimally, especially in the notification shade and settings app, which requires a lot of scrolling. This means that the ability to remove menus and controls, even mainlines, may be affected. It also has many features, including Secure Folder, Samsung Pay, Kids Space, Night Mode, floating apps, and cloning Dual Messenger apps with independent contact lists.
