No matter what Samsung wants you to believe, the Galaxy series doesn’t begin or end with the S and Note lines. Samsung’s flagships may get all the attention, but it doesn’t make itself the biggest smartphone maker on the planet by ignoring those who don’t have a big chunk of a thousand bucks to spend on the latest phone.

That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it’s brilliant. At a glance, it looks similar to the Galaxy S10, but the display inside offers a sufficiently snappy experience, without maxing out the graphics. It’s an absolute steal at £310, and worth serious consideration if the S and Note ranges are too expensive for you.

The Galaxy A series is very confusing. All you really need to know is that the Galaxy A50 is currently the second best in the lineup behind only the A70. It will soon be the third when the A80 launches later this month. This generally makes it better than the A10, A20e and A40.
What this actually means is a 6.4-inch device that looks a lot like the Samsung Galaxy S10 but has been hacked on the inside. The 2.3GHz octa-core Exynos 9610 processor powering the phone is roughly equivalent to the Snapdragon 675 powering the Galaxy A70. The phone also supports 4 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage.
Surprisingly for the price, the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with a triple camera array at the back, with a main 25-megapixel snapper accompanied by a depth sensor and an ultra-wide lens. The A50 comes with Samsung’s usual Super AMOLED screen, which is impressive when rivals in this price range often opt for cheaper IPS screens. There is doubt in this when it also includes an in-display fingerprint reader.
So what’s the harm? Well, a pretty reasonable £310, don’t you know? It’s actually a lot cheaper than many other Samsung smartphones, so its closest rivals come from other manufacturers.

First up is our favorite mid-ranger, the Google Pixel 3a. A smaller version of Google’s flagship, this version is a bit slower, not as impressively built and skips some features for £399, but already sells for around £350. Similarly, the P30 Lite, a smaller version of Huawei’s P30 series, costs £329.
Alternatively, there’s the Xiaomi Pocophone F1, the flagship in the mid-range wearables. This is a phone that somehow only costs £329 despite having the fastest Qualcomm mobile processor of 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which starts at £380 but has been a lot cheaper for some time now.
It’s pretty tough competition, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 is off to a great start, thanks to the Galaxy S10. This means there is virtually no bezel to speak of, although this variant sees the return of the notch for the front-facing camera. However, here it is more than a notch, a small notch at the top of the phone.
Like the S10, the phone has a very small chin at the bottom, but it’s only noticeable because the other edges are nearly bezel-less. The back is slightly curved and is plastic instead of glass, which should make it a bit more durable. This is still the type of phone you’ll want to protect with some sort of case, mind you.

The most exciting thing about a phone at this price is that the fingerprint reader is integrated into the screen, which means it is not visible on the phone. Simply press your thumb on the bottom of the screen and the phone will unlock, perhaps a bit slower than usual, but still a great feature at this price.
In terms of other features, as always, Samsung does it very well. expandable storage? Check: microSD cards up to 512 GB are supported. headphone jack? current and correct. dual SIM? Yes sir. The two drawbacks I see are that it doesn’t have waterproofing and doesn’t support wireless charging, but you can’t have everything at this price.
If there’s one thing Samsung is known for with its phone cases, it’s the quality of its displays. And this Super AMOLED display doesn’t disappoint: this time around, you’re looking at a 6.4-inch panel with 2340 x 1080 resolution.
The display displays 100% of the sRGB spectrum and, in the basic Display Color mode, manages to render colors very accurately. The other modes (Photo, Cinema and Adaptive) are a bit more vibrant, but you can’t say you don’t have a choice.

Being AMOLED, contrast is perfect and brightness isn’t too bad, with max brightness reaching 560 cd/m2 in auto mode (though if you set it to max brightness manually, it’s limited to 350 cd/m2 is, possibly for battery reason).
In short, it’s as good a screen as one can expect for the price; Better, in fact, thanks to the addition of an in-display fingerprint reader.
Before I answer that question, a quick recap. Samsung Galaxy A50 is powered by 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In everyday use, it feels creamy smooth, unlocks quickly, and jumps between apps with ease. But how does it work in benchmarks?
With one obvious exception, it’s all a lot. The Samsung Galaxy A50 outperforms everything else in its price range (oddly enough, including the £60 more expensive Galaxy A70), but not by enough of a margin to set the record straight.

Save for that exception: the £329 Xiaomi Pocophone F1 wipes the floor with everything else in this price range. This isn’t a huge surprise as it uses the same chip that was in the Samsung Galaxy S9 last year in the US, but it’s pretty clear what you need to do if you want to get the most return on your investment.
It’s a similar story when it comes to graphical grunt, although here the Galaxy A50 fares slightly worse, falling behind the Snapdragon-powered Pixel 3a and Nokia 8.1. Of course, the Pocophone F1 is an even more clear winner.
But the Samsung Galaxy A50 has one big standout, and that is the battery life. Our video wasn’t really long enough to cover it all, so started it a second time, clocking in at a whopping 21 hours and 21 minutes before the 4000mAh cell ran out. Only the Galaxy A70’s extra 500mAh managed to beat it, where it lasted 25 hours and 22 minutes.
In the Samsung Galaxy A50, we get not one, not two, but three rear cameras. The 25-megapixel, f/1.7 main camera is supported by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle and a 5-megapixel, f/2.2 depth sensor. It would have been nice if one of these had a telephoto zoom, but given the generous specifications we’ve been given for the price, you’re probably asking for the moon on a stick.
Samsung Galaxy S10e Review: The Cheaper One
This makes it a good match for the £329 Huawei P30 Lite’s triple-camera array (48-megapixel, eight-megapixel wide lens with f/1.8 and two-megapixel depth sensor). And while the Samsung Galaxy A50’s shots look great from a distance, when you zoom in, it’s clear that the Huawei P30 Lite has the upper hand.
That doesn’t mean the Galaxy A50 is bad, not by any means. And given the uncertain future of Huawei’s Android, you might consider the slight loss of loyalty a price worth paying.
When shooting indoors in low light, the cameras are more evenly matched, with both delivering images that are full of detail, accurate colors, and very little noise. Good job, both of you, although Huawei has a slight advantage once again.
For videos, the Galaxy A50 is capable of recording in Full HD at 30fps. If you want 4K or 60fps (not both at the same time, mind you), you’ll need to spend an extra £60 on the Galaxy A70. That said, video quality is great, and image stabilization seems solid enough for shaky hands.

The front selfie camera also deserves some recognition. It is 25-megapixel with f/2.0 aperture. That might be excessive for Skype calls and selfies, and even with Beauty Mode turned off, Samsung still insists on removing all your wrinkles and giving you that weird, weird glow in Samsung’s camera app.
This may be considered a plus for some, but beware those abusing smartphone beauty mode on Instagram: You’re not fooling anyone.
Still, if you can say that the Galaxy A50 has it all wrong, Samsung is doing something right. Really cool.
£310 gets you a very impressive smartphone that looks good, has a great screen, is fast enough for most people and takes decent pictures too. This is a phone that will be good enough for most people.
