Update Samsung Display Price Review – The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is one of our favorite smartphones of 2022 that offers powerful performance and a great camera experience in every lighting condition. Samsung also added an S Pen slot and stylus support, basically merging the Note line with the S-series Ultra. Beyond the hardware and performance, it’s impressive how Samsung’s One UI has matured in recent years.

Samsung will soon unveil the Galaxy S23 lineup and we take this opportunity to look back at the Galaxy S22 Ultra as we used it for a year. Below is our quick long-term review highlighting four key points –

With Qualcomm’s flagship SoC under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers ultra-fast performance. Whether you’re a multi-tasker switching between apps or a gamer, the S22 Ultra can get the job done seamlessly. However the thermals could be a little better as the back usually gets a bit warm when the device is under heavy stress, such as recording 4K 60fps video continuously for more than three minutes.

Even when playing graphic intensive games on mobile data, the device gets a little warm, but this is not the same on Wi-Fi. These high pressure scenarios aside, the combination of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, coupled with 12GB of RAM ensures a smooth experience.

Battery life is “good enough” but could be better. Even with the juicy 5,000mAh battery, you can get a full day of use but you won’t be able to extend it beyond that with moderate to heavy usage. I also used the Galaxy Z Fold4 powered by the pure Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, where the performance and efficiency gains are clearly visible, but we’ll talk about that in the Fold review in the next few weeks.

Now that the 5G network has moved to India, I was able to test it on Airtel as well, where I got decent download speeds of around 500Mbps and upload speeds of around 41Mbps. Battery life with 5G didn’t take too much of a hit and still managed to get through a full working day.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC ensures stress-free performance, but battery life could be further improved. Ultimate for photography, work in progress for video

Samsung Galaxy S21+ Review: Does The S21+ Tick The Boxes That Matter At This Price Point?

On paper, the camera hardware is the same as what we had in the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but the upgraded Image Signal Processor (ISP) on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC brings some key changes. From detailed RAW photos to a new night mode that Samsung calls Nightgraphy, for better HDR, there are plenty of under-the-hood tricks unlocked by Samsung’s Snapdragon SoC, AI and One UI. All these efforts also ensured that the smartphone scored 135 in the DXOMARK camera ranking. With the launch of the Galaxy S23 series around the corner, we expect Qualcomm and Samsung’s partnership, which was announced at the Snapdragon Tech Summit in November 2022, to bring more camera-centric innovations.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra does a good job of taking great daytime shots using the most basic settings with the 108MP main camera. Focus is sharp, exposure is clean and HDR works well, even when taking photos against the sun. Colors are a little saturated, but that’s fine because Samsung always pushes for punchy colors. Below are some shots from the day.

ISP from Snapdragon SoC offers good semantic segmentation. There are many other “industry first” flagship features that the SoC enables, and we’ve covered them in depth in our blog. We especially liked the HDR and skin tone mapping feature when clicking the sun. This is where ISP and AI work together to provide a balanced picture without overexposing the subject or blowing out the highlights in the background. Below are some photos, one taken on the iPhone 14 Pro and the other on the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

More pixels, and a larger sensor with 9-to-1 pixel binning helps capture more light, resulting in well-lit images in low-light conditions. Default low-light photos look decent in Auto mode, but with low-light mode turned on, the AI does a better job. Below are some samples.

If you’re someone who likes to take control of your shooting, the default camera app has a Pro mode, where you can manually adjust ISO, white balance and shutter speed depending on the scene. And if that’s not enough, there’s also an Expert RAW mode where you get more control, export images in RAW format to edit and make all the adjustments using apps like Adobe Lightroom or other platforms. Below are default mode photos and some sample photos edited using Adobe Lightroom.

The telephoto camera makes the Galaxy S22 Ultra stand out from the competition. With up to 10X optical zooming capability, you can get closer to the subject without losing quality. You also get 30X and 100X digital zoom. Photos taken at 30X zoom are still good for social media use, while 100X photos are decent, but not always usable.

Videography is one area where Samsung could make significant improvements with the next Galaxy. It has all the bells and whistles like 8K 24fps, 4K 60fps video recording and more, but the list and stabilization are nowhere near what you get on iPhones.

Since One UI 4.1, Samsung has also introduced some interesting features in the Gallery app and are available when you edit photos. This includes Object Eraser, where you can remove unwanted objects from your photos. There’s also a portrait effects mode where you can add background blur and depth-of-field effects to your regular photos. Google has made these features available to Pixel users, and it’s good to see Samsung offering similar features to its huge user base.

What impressed me the most was the object eraser feature, baked into the photo editor gallery itself. Very easy to remove unwanted people from the scene. Here is a short video showing how it works. The camera app also has other modes, with one particularly interesting one called Single Take. It records a 5-15 second video clip and AI analyzes the clip to select the best moments in photo form. Then it adds filters and portrait mode and creates short video clips like boomerangs, dynamic slow motion and more from that short clip. And the feature works well as expected. Samsung also has a Color-Pop feature in portrait mode, which keeps the subject in color while the rest of the background is defocused and monochrome. This is one of our favorite features of Portrait Mode Camera Effects.
