The Samsung Galaxy A71 offers a cheaper route to 5G service if that’s important to you, but otherwise it’s just a decent $600 phone. For hundreds less, the Pixel 4a and iPhone SE are better in almost every way except battery life, while the OnePlus Nord is a much better sub-$500 5G option for those who can afford it.

Samsung’s cheap phones used to be so boring you wouldn’t wish it on your worst enemy. Thankfully, the company has stepped up its game in the past year, and the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G is proof of that. At $599, the A71 stands above the rest as the top dog in Samsung’s 2020 A series, and as the name suggests, it can even connect to 5G networks.
Between the massive 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, the 4,500 mAh battery that lasted nearly 11 hours in our battery test, and the respectable overall performance, there’s a lot to like here, as you’ll see in the review. Unfortunately for Samsung, the race for best unlocked phone has never been closer than it is now, with the Pixel 4a, iPhone SE and OnePlus Nord in contention for top honors. All three handsets are also significantly cheaper than the A71 – relegating Samsung’s latest mid-ranger to the status of a contender, rather than a first choice.
The Samsung Galaxy A71 5G costs $599 — unless you buy it unlocked or through AT&T, T-Mobile or US Cellular. Verizon also offers the A71, though there’s a variant called the Galaxy A71 5G UW that’s tuned to connect to Big Red’s millimeter-wave 5G network. The Verizon version carries a $50 premium, bringing the price to $649.
No matter where you buy the Galaxy A71, you get 128GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM. Storage can be expanded using a microSD card. All A71 devices are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 processor.

A word about the Galaxy A71’s 5G support. Sorry, Verizon’s exclusive UW version, the A71 5G connects to sub-6GHz 5G networks. These towers offer services that are faster than the current 4G LTE, but not by a large margin. AT&T and T-Mobile now classify their 5G networks as “nationwide,” though coverage is still very low. Using our AT&T model, I couldn’t get 5G outside of Pennsylvania. Your rate may vary.
Don’t let the impressive price fool you – the Galaxy A71 5G is a great phone thanks to its 6.7-inch display. The minimal bezels surrounding the panel help keep the footprint as small as possible, but it doesn’t save the fact that the A71 is actually harder to use one-handed than the taller but slimmer Galaxy S20 Plus.
Fortunately, the A71 is a little less confusing thanks to its curved back, which once again uses the same “glass” material as on the Galaxy A51. Samsung has treated this plastic in such a way that it feels stiffer and sturdier than the plastics on mid-range phones in general, but our Prism Black unit still has a semi-reflective stripe pattern on it that looks a bit scratchy. The A71 isn’t ugly or cheap – but it’s still a far cry from the glass and metal of the flagships.
The front-facing camera on the Galaxy A71 5G is housed in a center notch with a slim notch above it. But when I quickly realized that I was listening to Spotify on the A71, this earbud doesn’t double as one of the phone’s stereo speakers. The single speaker is on the bottom edge, next to the USB-C port, which means it can easily be covered by your palm, especially while gaming. I prefer to hold large phones with my lower leg, so I naturally covered the bottom speaker every time I picked up the A71. It was a bit annoying to say the least.

The A71 doesn’t support wireless charging, which is a bit surprising since this phone costs just $100 less than the iPhone 11, which can charge wirelessly. Unlike the iPhone 11 or the newer models of Samsung’s Galaxy S series, the A71 isn’t rated as rugged at all. Both features are not reasonable to expect from a device costing more than $500; However, neither of those are available on the A71. At least Samsung hasn’t removed the headphone jack.
Like many other smartphones these days, the A71 sports an in-display fingerprint sensor. And while it may seem like a luxury for the average buyer, this scanner can be so stubborn to use that I long for the days of rear capacitive sensors on Android devices. There’s definitely a learning curve to figuring out where the A71 reads your fingerprints best, but even after I thought I had it figured out, I found myself retrieving through trial and error a few times.
The Galaxy A71 has one of Samsung’s Super AMOLED panels, with a 6.7-inch Full HD display. Because the pixel count is so low for its size, jagged edges on text, icons and graphics are a little more noticeable than on larger phones with quad-HD panels, though that’s somewhat forgivable at this price.
The A71 also lacks a fast refresh rate panel, which you get on the 90Hz OnePlus Nord or the 120Hz Galaxy S20. This isn’t a massive or surprising loss, again considering the price, although higher refresh rates do appear in cheaper and cheaper phones, and OnePlus broke the $500 barrier with the new Nord. The A71’s screen feels very thin in comparison.

That said, this is by no means a bad screen. It’s reasonably bright, topping out at 481 nits under our light meter. It also delivers strong colors, especially if you choose the vivid color profile. The trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, Tenet, showed the stunning dynamic range of the A71 as I watched the sunlight bounce off the waves lapping at a Mediterranean seaside town.
In fact, the A71 panel can display a wide range of colors, as it reproduced 200.3% of the sRGB color space in our test. If you think it’s too saturated, you can always drop down to the natural color profile for a little less pop. Meanwhile, the A71’s Delta-E color accuracy score of 0.33 is slightly behind the Pixel 4a (0.29) and further behind the iPhone SE (0.20). (Numbers closer to zero are more accurate.)
There are four cameras on the back of the Galaxy A71: a 64-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 12 MP ultra-wide, a 5 MP macro and a 5 MP depth sensor. Three of these, apart from the 64MP main camera, are the same as you’ll find on the Galaxy A51 I tested in May; the only notable upgrade is the main lens, which uses pixel binning to produce optimized 16MP images.
Overall, the A71’s photography is serviceable, if not amazing. Comparing it to our best budget camera phone, the new Pixel 4a, the A71 definitely produces a brighter image here, although I wouldn’t necessarily say it looks better. Some details are missing in the white feathers on the flower petals. The Pixel camera captures these interesting highlights, conveying a sense of texture and depth. In this regard, Samsung’s chronic insistence on eliminating shadows and contrasts does not help either.

A similar comparison with another flower, this time against the iPhone SE, produced similar results. Apple’s imaging technology provides amazing detail here, thanks to processes like Deep Fusion, which harnesses the power of the iPhone SE’s A13 Bionic chip to combine several shots into one before selecting the sharpest aspects of each. The A71 can’t convey the texture of the petals with the same amazing granularity even though it plays catchy highlights, and the natural bokeh in the background is less coherent and subtle.
You could argue that the A71’s main appeal to photographers will be the multitude of perspectives it offers, rather than the individual quality of any of the four lenses. It’s a stance I agree with, as neither the iPhone SE nor the Pixel 4a have ultra-wide and macro lenses designed for shooting wide-angle or close-up landscapes. Of course, I’m not sure anyone really needs a macro camera – the A71s really let you take photos from inches away, although the quality isn’t something that would make me beg for one in my next phone.
Additionally, the computational photography featured on Samsung’s mid-range devices still doesn’t compare to what’s offered in Google’s cheaper alternative. The A71’s night mode clearly loses out here to the Pixel 4a’s Night Sight, which was able to capture an image that was both less noisy and more visible than other Samsungs.
