Is The Samsung Galaxy A51 Worth Buying In 2021?

Samsung’s $400 Galaxy A51 would be a decent choice for budget buyers, but Apple’s new iPhone SE has completely crashed the party.

The mid-range smartphone category is a game of balance and compromise, and different phone manufacturers value certain aspects over others.

For the iPhone SE, Apple prioritized performance by giving the iPhone 8 the same powerful mobile chip as the iPhone 11 series. Everything about the iPhone 8, including the design, screen, battery life, and camera, was good enough to stay that way, so the company thought it was right.

Samsung Galaxy A52 Vs Galaxy A51: Upgrade Or No?

For Google’s Pixel 3a from May 2019, the company focused on giving its mid-ranger a great flagship camera, as well as an excellent OLED screen. That means compromises in design and materials – it’s a plastic phone (that still feels bulky) with a dull design.

For the Galaxy A51, Samsung has created an almost perfect flagship phone for people who want triple camera systems and big beautiful screens that you usually find on flagships. But, the company went so far with premium features that it neglected the performance of the phone.

The Galaxy A51 is as premium as it gets when it comes to mid-range $400 smartphones. It has everything you’d expect on a phone that costs twice as much, like narrow bezels around the screen, a rugged design, Samsung’s hole-punch selfie camera and a glass back.

It only gets better when the big 6.5-inch screen is on – it’s an AMOLED screen that’s bright and produces colorful colors. The screen could easily be on a $1,000 high-end smartphone, but here it is on a $400 mid-ranger. It’s also one of the biggest screens you can find on a $400 smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Smartphone Review

The Galaxy A51 has only two things going for it as a mid-range smartphone: it’s lighter and thinner than high-end flagships, which are getting thicker and heavier as they pack more and more technology. The thin and light A51 is a pleasant contrast to the flagships I’m used to.

The Galaxy A51’s performance isn’t impressive, but it’s not terrible. It doesn’t match its high-end exterior, but that’s okay. It opens, runs and loads apps quickly and easily, but there are noticeable lags and stutters during normal use. It easily plays power-hungry games like “Asphalt 9”.

That decent-but-few experience matches the GeekBench 5 benchmark results, which show a 347 single-core score and 1,305 for multi-core. It is on par with the performance of Google’s Pixel 3a, a 2019 smartphone. In fact, last year’s Galaxy A50 also had the same number. With that in mind, performance has hardly improved and it’s not crazy to expect better performance from a phone released in 2020.

At the end of the day the A51 runs, runs and plays the same apps, videos, games and music that I normally run on high-end flagships – it just doesn’t do it as quickly or smoothly.

Samsung Galaxy A52 Review With Pros And Cons

However, the battery life of the Galaxy A51 is excellent. You can easily get two days worth on a single charge. That’s one benefit of running a mediocre processor — the A51’s “meh” mobile chip just siphons battery power compared to the power-hungry and powerful chips in high-end phones. In fact, one of the main complaints with the new iPhone SE is battery life — the tiny battery isn’t designed to power a chip as big as Apple’s A13.

There’s no wireless charging or ultra-fast chargers — that stuff is reserved for more expensive smartphones. You can get a good standard fast charger that works.

Samsung did a good job with the A51’s in-display fingerprint sensor – it’s fast and accurate. Face recognition also works well.

This $400 phone takes great photos — it’s only when you compare the A51’s photos to those from phones twice the price, or the $400 Pixel 3a, that you’ll really notice some flaws and significant differences. Quality camera.

Samsung Galaxy A51: Still An All In One Smartphone Solution In 2023

The A51 handles areas in shadow and sunlight well, and the image is clear and crisp, even when my cat is stuck in a four-wheeler, dragging herself through dry concrete:

But, sometimes the color and brightness could be a little better. Here’s a flower patch from the A51, where the colors look washed out and the photo looks overexposed:

Here’s a similar image taken with the $900 Pixel 4 XL, which does a good job of capturing what the scene actually looks like:

The A51 has an ultra-wide camera lens, which isn’t very sharp, and comes with a lot of lens distortion and over-saturated colors. However, Pixel phones or Apple’s new iPhone SE don’t have this option:

Pros And Cons Fact At Samsung Galaxy A51 Review

For $400, Galaxy A51 owners should feel pretty bad about their phone’s camera. Pixel phones (including the Pixel 3a) and the iPhone SE can generally take better photos, but the A51 can hold its own and offers an ultra-wide camera that’s unmatched by phones from Google or Apple.

The only thing that raises my eyebrows is his performance, which I talked about above. It’s doing well now, which doesn’t bode well for its future, a few years down the road.

While the A51’s performance is quite slow, there are features like a premium design, a beautiful screen and a triple lens camera.

Samsung had a difficult task balancing performance with high-end features such as premium design, beautiful large screen, triple-lens camera system and long battery life. But to cram these high-end features into a $400 phone, Samsung made a lot of compromises with performance.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review

The thing is – performance is not something you want to compromise too much. This determines the phone’s longevity, and I can’t picture the A51 lasting much longer; Apple’s new $400 iPhone SE looks weak when it comes to the same performance as its flagship iPhone 11 series, which still manages to come with a great camera.

I would say the Galaxy A51 is a good entry-level phone for budget users, but Apple’s new iPhone SE completely destroys the A51’s appeal. If you can spend $400, the new iPhone SE is a good mid-ranger and entry-level smartphone for almost anyone.

Unless you want a particularly large screen and/or ultrawide camera on your $400 smartphone, you should buy the new iPhone SE instead. And, if you’re an Android-only user, wait to see what Google does with the Pixel 4a.
