The Samsung Galaxy A51 is one of the biggest mid-range products of 2020. This is the first time the Samsung A series is available in the US, making it affordable for those who want a Samsung smartphone but don’t. Pay $1,000 to get one.

About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 for six days on Google Fi. During the review period, the phone ran One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made of a material that Samsung calls “Glasstic”. It gives a higher quality feel than a pure plastic phone, but it certainly doesn’t feel as premium as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. After all, it’s still plastic, although I don’t mind plastic on other phones in this price range. The phone is smooth but not slippery and quite light at only 158g. In comparison, the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.
The rim of the device is aluminum and the quality is quite high. On the right side you’ll find the power button and volume rocker, with a USB-C port, speaker and headphone jack on the bottom. On the left side of the phone is a dual SIM card tray that can hold two SIM cards and an SD card up to 512GB. While most phones double the second slot to accommodate a SIM card or a microSD card, the A51 has two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD card tray. It’s good to see.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Great Screen, Bad Performance
I quite like the colors and the crazy design on the back of the device. It’s really different and I appreciate the phone with interesting colors. The model I’m looking at is the Prism Crush Black, which emits a rainbow-colored glow when lit from the right angle. Also available in Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White, which offer rainbow-like reflections.
The speaker on the phone is quite loud but lacks bass feel. I wouldn’t use the speakers to listen to live music, but the headphone jack is a big plus.
For a phone under $400, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has an impressive display. Most mid-range phones use LCDs instead of OLEDs, but Samsung managed to cram in a large OLED display with a fairly dense pixel count. It’s a 1080p screen. Since most high-end phones come with 1080p by default, this doesn’t bother me. The colors are clear and vivid, which is usual for Samsung panels. Convenient.
One annoying thing about this display is the cutout for the camera in the middle of the phone. When I usually like the punch hole, Samsung decided to put a silver metal ring around the camera, which makes it more obvious than it would be without a ring. It’s not a deal breaker, but it makes you notice it even when the screen is off. I don’t know why Samsung did this.
Samsung Galaxy A Series
The Galaxy A51 has an optical fingerprint reader on the screen. Unfortunately, the fingerprint reader is slow and inaccurate. It takes about two seconds to register a fingerprint each time. Moreover, the accuracy rate seems to be around 50% when I use the device, which is pretty bad. For speed and accuracy, it might be better to use the pin unlock or even the 2D unlock option.
With a mid-range Exynos chip and only 4GB of RAM as standard, we don’t expect great performance from the Samsung Galaxy A51. After using the device for a while and running benchmarks, we confirmed our fears.
I haven’t said this about a phone in a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. You may experience lag when opening apps and multitasking, and there is often jitteriness when swiping through the interface. The phone uses 1.9GB of available 4GB RAM, even with all apps closed, which is a bad sign. In our tests, we concluded that modern versions of Android require around 6 GB of RAM to run smoothly, and this is confirmed by this device.
We see the same story in the criteria. In our tests, the phone lacks many devices. Since its launch, it has gone further than the rest of the mid-range lineup, with Snapdragon 700 series phones outperforming the Galaxy A51’s Exynos processor. Check out the results below.
Samsung Galaxy S22+ Review: A Good Phone Playing It Safe
The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a rather large 4000 mAh battery. With an underpowered CPU and a small amount of RAM, you’d expect the device to have good battery life. And honestly, it’s not bad, but not as great as it should have been. The phone lasts for about 29 hours, from 8am a day to 1pm a day. It’s definitely not as good as a phone with a bigger battery, but I’m glad it can last at least a whole day. I got about four and a half hours of screen time on this device.
The A51 supports 15W charging, which isn’t the fastest. Considering the original Google Pixel supported 18W charging in 2016, this is a bit slow for 2020. The Samsung Galaxy S20 flagship device charges 25W by default, so I’d like to see 18W at least on the Galaxy A51.
For a phone under $400, the Galaxy A51 has a good camera, and quite a few to boot. There’s a 48-megapixel main sensor that takes 12-megapixel images, as well as wide-angle and macro lenses, a depth sensor, and a 32-megapixel front camera.
The dynamic range looks good on this camera kit, although it looks like the photos are a bit underexposed – perhaps to avoid highlights. That said, some camera systems can overexpose shadows due to dynamic range, producing an annoying gray haze in shadows. Samsung phones have traditionally done this, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the A51 does not.

Colors were generally good, but the A51 overexposed certain colors like blue and green. This tends to blow out the sky and plants, but makes some images look a bit cartoony. Samsung has always done this with their camera systems, but I’m not surprised.
The depth sensor seems to have helped enough and I’m glad it works on more than just humans and animals. While bokeh could look more natural, object detection and cropping are quite accurate. I was very surprised. Hair detection remains blurry, but this is common in artificial bokeh. This regimen also clears my skin more than I expected.
The selfie camera is also good, with good dynamic range and colors. Sharpness is quite good, although colors like green and blue are still oversaturated.
The MSRP of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has dropped to just $349.99 and you can get it for even less. You can easily find a phone under $300 if you shop around. At this price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung offers with the phone.

With the A51 you get a great screen, great quality, a great camera and even a headphone jack. It also offers three years of guaranteed software updates, which guarantees support up to at least Android 12. However, while the build quality and display are also excellent, the low quality of this phone is its Achilles heel. And for a retail price of $349, the competition is very high.
The iPhone SE has the latest processor from Apple and the same build quality for the same price, while the Google Pixel 4a has a good Android experience and a good camera for $ 350. And if you want to spend more, but not $ 1,000, Samsung also is offering the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features as the full Galaxy S20, for $699 before trade-in. If you’re looking for something similar with more power, then the Samsung Galaxy A71 is also out, as is the Galaxy A51 5G – an updated version of the A51 with a faster chipset and a bigger battery.
If you want the latest mid-range device from Samsung, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. Retains solid build quality and good battery life while upgrading to the Snapdragon 750G SoC. You’ll pay more at $499, but the improvements are worth it. Samsung hasn’t made many changes to the weak peripheral camera, but the move to 25W charging will solve one of the biggest complaints with the Galaxy A51.
