Samsung caught me. On paper, the company’s Galaxy A51 appears to have everything you’d expect from a $400 smartphone. Big, beautiful screen. Lots of cameras. 4000 mAh battery. Inspired by the design and the headphone jack. As an avid, some might say angry, fan of interesting mid-range smartphones, I was ready for the A51 to take its place alongside other budget models like the Pixel 3a XL and iPhone SE. That’s not to say the Galaxy A51 is a bad phone. Samsung puts a lot of effort into it, and during a week of testing I found it to be pretty sweet at times. Unfortunately, everything the company did right couldn’t completely eliminate rough, inconsistent performance: it’s a $400 device that sometimes works like a $250 one. I don’t think it’s enough to make the A51 a bad smartphone, but it’s still bad.

The Galaxy A51 I tested is the Verizon Wireless model with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. (Disclaimer: Verizon is the parent company, but has no influence over what we say.) Both Sprint and AT&T offer this version of the A51, and regardless of which carrier you choose, they’ll both sell you the phone directly. $399. That doesn’t sound too steep, but it’s worth noting that the phone can be a bit more expensive if you buy it unlocked, especially if you live outside the US. If you’re serious about wanting an A51, you need to look for a good deal: this thing isn’t worth $400.
If there’s one thing Samsung deserves credit for, it’s that the A51 doesn’t look like a $400 phone. Of course, since this phone costs a fraction of what the flagship does, Samsung had to be careful with style and materials. Consider Samsung’s choice of materials: Wrapping a phone in glass quickly raises its price, which is why the company used a material called “Glasstic” for the body of the A51. As the name suggests, this means that this phone has a plastic frame that looks like glass if you look closely. The Galaxy A51 also lacks the IP rating for water and dust resistance, which is common for phones in this price range. The rest of the phone is standard. On the right side of the phone is a USB-C port that supports 15W fast charging, and a nanoSIM/microSD card combo tray that lets you add up to 128GB of storage. If you’re a music lover, you’ll appreciate the convenient headphone jack Samsung squeezed into the A51, because its single speaker is fantastic.
What helps elevate the A51’s design is the wide 6.5-inch full HD + Super AMOLED screen. It’s one of Samsung’s Infinity-O displays, which, if you don’t agree with the marketing BS, means there’s a small hole in the panel to accommodate the 32-megapixel front-facing camera. It’s surprisingly small and would be easy to miss if it weren’t for the shiny metal ring around it – almost Samsung-esque.
To continue watching. Fortunately, the rest of the screen is typical Samsung: deep blacks, red colors and great viewing angles for the price. Its high brightness can sometimes feel a little anemic for outdoor use, but the display is perfect for watching YouTube videos while at home.

The screen is often the most expensive part of a smartphone, and I’m glad Samsung chose this display. Not easy on the eyes; It’s a nice contrast to devices like the iPhone SE, which rely on modern design to keep costs down. Visually, the A51 is stunning, but as my parents always said, looks aren’t everything.
The trouble starts here when you pick up the phone. There’s a fingerprint sensor under the display, and it’s not… pretty. When it works, it often takes a while to recognize my thumb. However, in most cases, the sensor does not work. You’ll usually see a small green circle around your finger to indicate that the sensor is analyzing your print, but this isn’t always visible. Cleaning the screen again did not solve the problem and I could no longer register my fingerprints. For sanity’s sake, set a PIN or pattern unlock instead.
Once inside, the biggest problem became apparent very quickly – the A51 seemed to stall at times. Switching between apps regularly feels great, as does browsing through app pages and even returning to the home screen. You know, the things you do
To be clear, this doesn’t happen often, and I didn’t complain too much when the phone was firing on all cylinders. If you’re the type of person who just wants to watch videos and maybe send a few emails to your family, you might not notice this lag for a while. But if you’re a stickler for smooth, consistent performance, be prepared for some disappointment — stuttering animations and app launch delays are never far away, and it gets old fast.

Exactly why the A51 performs the way it does isn’t entirely clear, but part of the problem likely lies in Samsung’s choice of chipset. Instead of using a Qualcomm Snapdragon like most Android phones in the US, the company ran an in-house Exynos 9611. – Some of the CPU cores are faster and support a wider variety of rear cameras, but that’s it. It says a lot about Samsung’s priorities that it’s going to be splurging on a big screen and using a small chip update that was announced more than two years ago.
The funny thing is, this chipset is no slouch. It sits somewhere between the $250 Moto G Power (with Snapdragon 665 chipset) and the $470 Pixel 3 XL (with Snapdragon 670), which is exactly what you’d expect given how expensive these phones are and how much they cost. The A51’s specs are also pretty good – nowhere near flagship-level, but in line with other US-bound devices we’ve seen in this price range. If so, it seems likely that this feature incompatibility is caused by a software bug that can be fixed in a future update. (To be fair, Samsung won’t confirm if updates are coming.)
In fairness to Samsung, people considering a $400 smartphone probably know they can’t expect class-leading performance. The big problem here is that it’s still a lot of money to shell out for a smartphone, and the A51 doesn’t strike a good balance between performance and price.
The Moto G Power—a phone that costs $150 less with an older chipset—performs a bit more consistently. And the Pixel 3a XL? Forget it. The difference in smoothness and overall quality of experience between these devices is heavily in favor of the Pixel. It’s worth noting that all three phones have 4GB of RAM, so it’s not like Motorola or Google have too much hardware. And if you’re not tied to Android, there’s always the iPhone SE. It’s a $400 arrow aimed at Samsung’s heart, running alongside Apple’s most expensive smartphones. Whether it’s software bugs, bad memory management, or something else entirely, this questionable performance makes the A51 hard to recommend for the price.
