About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 for six days on Google Fi. Throughout the review period, the phone ran One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made from a material that Samsung calls “glass”. This gives it a higher quality feel than pure plastic phones, but it certainly doesn’t feel as premium as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It’s still plastic after all, though I don’t mind it as much as the plastic on other phones in this price range. The phone is smooth but not slippery and quite light weighting just 158g. In comparison, the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.

The edge of the device is made of aluminum and looks high quality. The right side houses the power button and volume keys, along with the USB-C port, speaker and headphone jack. On the left side of the phone is a dual SIM card tray that can accommodate two SIM cards and an SD card of up to 512 GB. While most phones double up the second slot to allow for a SIM card or a microSD card, the A51 has two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD card tray. It’s great to see.

I like the crazy color and design on the back of the device. It’s definitely different and I appreciate phones with interesting colors. I have the Prism Crush Black model, which gives off a rainbow-colored glow when the light hits it at just the right angle. Also available are Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White, which offer similar rainbow-hued reflections.

The phone’s speakers were quite loud but lacked bass. I wouldn’t use the speakers to listen to music directly, although the headphone jack is a big plus.

For a sub-$400 phone, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has a surprisingly good display. Most mid-range phones use LCDs instead of OLEDs, but Samsung managed to squeeze in a large OLED display with a fairly dense pixel count. It’s a 1080p screen. Considering most high-end phones default to 1080p, this didn’t bother me. Colors were bold and vivid, which is typical of Samsung panels. That is great.

One annoying thing about this screen is the camera cutout in the middle of the phone. While I generally like punch-hole cutouts, Samsung decided to put a silver metal ring around the camera, which makes everything much more obvious than without the ring. Not a problem, but it forces you to notice it even when the screen is off. I don’t understand why Samsung did this.

The Galaxy A51 has an optical in-display fingerprint reader. Unfortunately, the fingerprint reader is slow and inaccurate. Enrolling the fingerprint took about two seconds each time. Also, while using the device, the accuracy seemed to be around 50%, which is pretty bad. You might be better off using pin unlock or even the 2D face unlock option for speed and accuracy.

With a mid-range Exynos chip and just 4GB of RAM as standard, we didn’t expect the Samsung Galaxy A51 to perform well. After using the device for a while and passing our benchmarks, our fears were confirmed.

I haven’t said this about a phone in a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. There can be lag when opening apps and multitasking, and stuttering is common when swiping through the UI. The phone used 1.9GB of the available 4GB of RAM even with all apps closed, which is a very bad sign. During testing, we concluded that modern versions of Android need around 6GB of RAM to run smoothly, and this device confirmed that.

We saw a similar story in benchmarks. The phone lagged behind most devices in our tests. Since launch, it has fallen further behind the rest of the mid-range, with the Snapdragon 700 series phones far ahead of the Galaxy A51’s Exynos processor. Check out the results below.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Premium Looks And Powerful Cameras At A Mid Range Price

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a rather large 4000mAh battery. With a low-power processor and low RAM, you can count on the device to extend battery life. And honestly, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as good as it should have been. The phone lasted about 29 hours, from 8am one day to 1pm the next. It’s certainly not as good as phones with much larger batteries, but I’m glad it can last at least a full day. I have about four and a half hours of screen time on this device.

The A51 supports 15W charging, which isn’t the fastest. Considering the original Google Pixel supported 18W charging in 2016, it seems a bit slow for 2020. Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S20 devices currently charge at 25W by default, so I’d like to see a minimum of 18W on the Galaxy A51.

For a sub-$400 phone, the Galaxy A51 has some decent cameras, and some to boot. There’s a 48MP main sensor that can store images up to 12MP, as well as wide-angle and macro lenses, a depth sensor, and a 32MP front camera.

Dynamic range seemed good for this set of cameras, although photos looked a little underexposed – probably to avoid highlights. That said, some camera systems can push shadows too far into the dynamic range, which creates an annoying gray haze in the shadows. Samsung phones traditionally do this, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that the A51 didn’t.

Samsung Galaxy A03s Review: Design, Build Quality, Handling

Colors were generally good, but the A51 tended to over-saturate certain colors like blues and greens. It probably makes the sky and plants stand out, but it made some images look a little cartoonish. Samsung has always done this with its camera systems, so I’m not exactly surprised.

The depth sensor seemed to help a lot and I’m glad it works for more than just humans and animals. While the bokeh could definitely look a little more natural, subject detection and clipping was pretty accurate. I was pleasantly surprised. Hair detection remained blurry, but this is normal for artificial bokeh. This regimen also tended to smooth out my skin more than I would have liked.

The selfie camera was pretty good too, with decent dynamic range and colors. Sharpness was very good, although colors like green and blue were still oversaturated.

The Samsung Galaxy A51’s MSRP has dropped to just $349.99 and you can get it for a lot less. If you shop around, you can easily find a phone for under $300. At that price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung is offering with the phone.

Samsung Galaxy A71 5g Review: Premium Midrange At A Price

With the A51 you get a really great screen, decent build quality, some decent cameras, and even a headphone jack. It also offers three years of guaranteed software updates, which guarantees support up to at least Android 12. While the build quality and display are also excellent, this phone’s poor performance is its Achilles’ heel. At $349 retail, the competition is very, very high.

The iPhone SE has Apple’s latest processor and the same build quality for the same price, and the Google Pixel 4a has a fantastic Android experience and a great camera for $350. $1,000 Samsung also offers the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features as the full Galaxy S20, for $699 before trade-in. If you’re looking for something similar with a little more power, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is already out, as is the Galaxy A51 5G – an updated version of the A51 with a faster chipset and bigger battery.

If you want Samsung’s latest mid-range device, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. When upgraded to the Snapdragon 750G SoC, it maintains solid build quality and long battery life. You’ll pay a little more at $499, but the improvements are worth it. Samsung hasn’t made many changes to the weak external cameras, but the switch to 25W charging solves one of our biggest issues with the Galaxy A51.
