Last year, three of the top five best-selling phones worldwide were LG phones, according to Counterpoint Research, behind the iPhone XR and 11 in three, four and five positions. If you live in the US, when you think of Samsung, you probably think of the Galaxy S or Note – but the Samsung phones that sold so well were the mid-range Galaxy A-series phones.

Samsung is making a big push to sell more of these phones in the US with the $399 Galaxy A51. That price competes directly with the iPhone SE, but there are plenty of other Android phones that come in under $500. What makes the A51 stand out is LG’s marketing strategies and partnerships. It’s available unlocked on Amazon and Samsung’s website, known as Samsung Devices, and is also available on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Xfinity Mobile.

The Galaxy A51 doesn’t look or feel like a cheap phone. It is great and great. Samsung says it’s made from a material called “Glastik,” which sounds a lot chintier than it sounds. It almost feels like glass, but it has a bit of plastic that you can feel.
It ships with 128GB of internal storage, bordering on a very generous $399. Plus, you can expand the storage with microSD. There’s also a headphone jack, which at any rate is accepted as an inclusion, but it’s a bit larger than usual.

My part is Galaxy A51 screen. It’s just a perfectly formed 6.5-inch OLED, even in sunlight. If you’re looking for advanced technology – such as ambient light-matching colors, high refresh rates or even higher resolutions – look elsewhere. But these portable sizes have 1080 x 2400 pixels and more. I’ve seen a lot of big screen letdowns on Android phones and this isn’t one of them.
Every phone has trade-ins, and the $399 phone has more than $1,000. So phone makers need to pick their priorities, and Samsung has clearly taken the lead. It is better to choose when they see and see each other hundreds of times a day.
But I can nitpick – not about the screen, but what’s underneath – especially the camera’s camera roll. I have no problem with pinhole cameras. Generally they prefer brands of any size. But for reasons beyond our understanding, Samsung placed a small chrome circle around the camera. When light hits it, it takes certain angles making it difficult to see. This is strange.
Another thing under the screen is the optical fingerprint sensor. I’m not sure if Samsung hasn’t iterated enough on these sensors or what, but it’s very slow. The green jitter animation may take about a second to let you know the phone is unlocked. It’s not the most accurate sense either, especially in direct sunlight.

Until it’s too much fun. In the US, most popular Samsung phones use Qualcomm processors, but this A51 uses the Samsung Exynos 9611, a mid-range chip that’s not up to the task of making this phone snappy. Apps take a long time to load – especially if they haven’t been opened recently and thus aren’t active on 4GB of RAM.
Once you’re in the browser or app, it trims everything down to just the right size. But sometimes, the screen renders or loads the next item in your feed.
As I said, phone manufacturers have different preferences in these low-cost phones. Apple, for example, kept the same old iPhone 8 body with a smaller screen and larger bezels for the iPhone SE, but with the fastest mobile processor available: the A13 Bionic. LG chose otherwise.
Battery life is good, but it doesn’t quite live up to Samsung’s claim of being “long-lasting”. I can get a lot out of the day – certainly better than I could on the iPhone SE. But with a 4,000mAh cell and a 1080p screen, I’m a little surprised it’s not much better. In theory those specs should add a lot of weight, and I wonder if the Exynos processor might be partially to blame.

Finally, there is the camera system, which is slower than it should be. The main lens has a 48-megapixel sensor that churns out 12-megapixel images by default. Those pictures, like almost any camera these days, are fairly decent in good light. I was pleasantly surprised to see a good white balance, which Samsung sometimes lacks. But Samsung still has another tendency to raise the shadow of unnatural evil.
You probably know what’s coming: It’s tough in low light — worse than the iPhone SE, in fact. And when you really zoom in on the A51’s details, it crops up a lot more than other smartphone cameras — with 48 megapixels.
There’s a 12-megapixel ultrawide and a 5-megapixel macro camera, each of which is more about sports than getting great shots. Fun is good! I enjoyed using these cameras. There’s also a 5-megapixel depth camera that doesn’t seem to help at all, at least in terms of portrait mode. Finally, the car’s camera is 32 megapixels and produces images that often look processed.
III. Nokia’s One UI customizations on top of Android make using a great phone smoother. But Samsung’s penchant for spamming its phones with crapware also continues: My Verizon-based unit came completely repackaged with games and services no one wants. I have to say that I can count on this phone for software updates for more than two or three years.

Of the three “awesome” things Samsung promises, I think the Galaxy A51 only achieves one and a half of them. The screen is great, the battery life is pretty good, and the camera is nothing short of impressive. The Pixel 3A (and possibly the imminent 4A) and iPhone SE are shockingly good at their cameras for $399. But the A51’s images definitely look like they come from a mid-range phone.
It’s hard to do well on a $400 phone, and by every possible metric none of them are terrible. But you should feel that some parts of the phone are made of more expensive materials. Aside from the screen, the Galaxy A51 isn’t all that great.
Before using each smart device you must agree to a series of terms and conditions — a contract that no one reads. It is impossible for us to read and analyze each of these agreements. But we started counting how many times we “agreed” to use it when we reviewed devices, because most people don’t read these contracts and they certainly don’t work.

Finally, if you have the carrier version of the A51. The Verizon-approved version had options for Verizon’s location, app info, cloud services, and even “digital husband services” — none of which are necessary, but all of which are persistent and annoying to get used to.
