Samsung Galaxy A51 Review Pros, Cons & Faq

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is a pretty affordable Android phone that you might want to buy if you can’t get the Samsung Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S21, or if you can’t get the Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition in your area.

The lower price comes with clear cuts to Samsung’s more expensive phones. We’ll cover these fully in this Samsung Galaxy A51 review, but in short, the back is plastic instead of glass, the cameras aren’t that good (even if there are 5), the chipset is underpowered, and there’s no extras like water resistance.

The classic Samsung features you’ll find on the Galaxy A51 include a bold AMOLED display and software that’s just like the Galaxy S21 series.

At $399 / £329 / US$599, the Samsung A51 looks like a surefire hit. However, there are more obvious performance issues here than alternatives like the Moto G8 Plus and Oppo Reno 2Z. Android moves a little too slowly. Parts of the camera app sometimes do this too. Luckily, games aren’t that affected – PUBG fans, don’t worry.

Nokia G21 Review: Lots Of Positives And Two Big Disadvantages

Don’t expect miracles from the cameras. Like most budget phones with four cameras, this phone feels more like a dual-lens phone with some half-baked extras, although its third macro camera is better than other phones in its class and offers a different way to take pictures.

After we reviewed the device, Samsung also unveiled a slightly modified version called the Galaxy A51 5G. We haven’t tested that device properly yet, but the big difference is that it has a different chipset with added 5G connectivity.

The company also followed up the Galaxy A51 with the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G. It – in addition to having 5G – has other upgrades like a 120 Hz display, a larger 4,500 mAh battery, more megapixels on the main camera and a different chipset.

Of course, it costs more too, so the Samsung Galaxy A51 is still worth checking out – it’s not one of Samsung’s best phones, but it’s still a solid choice.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Great Screen And Price, But The Rest Is Just Okay

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is priced at $399 / £329 / AU$599, so it’s a pretty affordable phone, competing with the likes of the £379 OnePlus Nord (about $480, AU$680) and the Moto G 5G Plus with price from £299. the price is more competitive. (About $375, AU$535).

Other options include the $429 / £419 / AU$719 iPhone SE (2022) and the $349 / £349 / AU$599 Google Pixel 4a. Not the Galaxy A51.

Well, the model we reviewed didn’t, but Samsung later released a 5G version for $500 / £429 (around $700 USD). Although it is more expensive than the 4G version, it is not as expensive as 5G phones.

Of course, the prices we’ve listed above are launch prices, but if you shop around, you can probably find the Samsung Galaxy A51 for less now. At the time of writing, we’re selling it for $290 / £230 / US$390.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Vs Galaxy S10: Which Is Right For You?

You can buy the Samsung Galaxy A51 in most countries where Samsung sells it, although the 5G version isn’t available in Australia. This is strange and we don’t know if this is a permanent condition or just temporary.

If you have a bit more to spend, you might also want to consider the newer Samsung Galaxy A52 5G.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 offers some of the design features of Samsung’s high-end phones. But there are a few goodies that aren’t part of the expensive Galaxy S series.

The bezels on the display are slim, and the front-facing camera sits in one of Samsung’s ‘Infinity O’ punch holes. However, the back is plastic instead of glass, and the front camera isn’t integrated into the windshield like many places near it.

Samsung Galaxy A Series (2020): Specs, Price, Release, And More

Of course, the windshield covers the selfie camera. But the layers below are much more reflective, making the Samsung A51’s selfie camera stand out like a tiny monocle.

The side buttons are also plastic. Result? The Samsung Galaxy A51’s build is closer to that of the Motorola Moto G8 or Oppo A5 2020 than a high-end Samsung.

Although it has a slightly pronounced back. Like other recent A-series phones, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has criss-cross lines on the back, each with a slightly different look. The bottom has a striped texture of thin lines, for example, under the top plastic layer.

It’s a pretty subtle look, but when the Samsung Galaxy A51 catches the light, you’ll see bright iridescent colors cluster around the curved edges like laser streaks.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: A Decent Mid Range Samsung Smartphone

It could pass for an expensive Samsung, especially since the large quad-lens camera housing on the back looks advanced. The phone is also a fair size, built for media and wider than the Galaxy S20.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 does not have official water resistance like most phones at this price point. But it does have a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is useful if you’re not into Bluetooth headphones yet.

There’s also an in-display fingerprint scanner, which is another attempt to make the Samsung Galaxy A51 look like a high-end phone. However, it is not a great scanner. It’s slower than most fingers and won’t detect if your fingers are a little wet or if you’re not paying attention to the position of your thumb.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400. This is an instant win on paper, as many phones at this price point have LCD screens.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Specs, Review, Release Date

OLED devices tend to offer much deeper colors and always have better contrast than LCDs because they use luminescent pixels instead of a universal backlight. However, it’s not one of Samsung’s best OLED panels and has a few glaring issues.

Less advanced OLED panels tend to turn blue at a slight angle when you turn the phone screen left or right. This is rarely a big problem, since we all look at our phones from the front, right?

But this effect comes from the other direction in the Samsung A51. Hold it in a relaxed and tilted position so that the top of the screen is so blue. It’s only noticeable when significant parts of the screen are white, like web pages, but it immediately shows that this isn’t one of Samsung’s best OLEDs.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 also has other usual benefits of an OLED display. The optional vivid screen mode looks very saturated, and the contrast in a dark room is clearly much better than LCD phones for the price.

Screen brightness is also pretty good, if not in the same league as the Galaxy S20. Maximum brightness seems conservative when used indoors, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 performs better when worn outdoors on a bright day. It is also compatible with violin color and contrast to increase visibility in difficult conditions.

It’s not bright enough to let you easily watch a movie in direct sunlight, but the user interface and web pages look reasonably sharp.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is also HD Netflix certified at launch, but does not support HDR video.

Issues aside, it’s a good phone for video streaming, although anywhere but indoors, the reflective (if small) pinhole camera is doubly distracting.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has four rear cameras. But when you first set up the camera, you might wonder what half of them are doing.

There’s no zoom, which is a classic sign of a multi-camera setup where additional lenses are used to crunch the numbers. We can’t entirely blame Samsung for this, because it’s not easy to put a good zoom camera in a phone at a decent price.

You have a 48-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a pair of 5-megapixel cameras that are used for close-up macro shots and depth shots to blur the background.

It’s not hard to spot a filler: those two 5-megapixel cameras. But this one is far less bad than what Oppo tried recently. The Oppo A9 2020 has two utterly useless 2MP cameras.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Hands On, Quick Review: A71 Alternative?

The Samsung Galaxy A51’s 5MP macro camera won’t win you a wildlife photographer of the year award, but it’s fun to play with. You can get very close to your subject and capture subjects that the main camera won’t even focus on. Its main problem, apart from acceptable image quality, is blurring. A little shake will ruin your photos unless the light level is good.

It’s still a useful macro camera and offers another way to think about how to take photos. Samsung
