Update Samsung A51 Model Number Review
How good can a $400 phone be? When the device in question is the Samsung Galaxy A51, the answer is simple: very good. As the first true representative of the Galaxy A family in the US, the A51 is a convincing effort that proves Samsung can make a good mid-range phone worth buying. In fact, Samsung’s budget phone (£329 in the UK and AU$599 in Australia) even beats the iPhone SE (which starts at $399, £419 and AU$749) in some specific ways and important. When it comes to screen size and clarity, phone features, camera quality and performance, the Galaxy A51 delivers where it counts, with one exception.

The speed of Samsung’s Exynos 9611 processor is the Achilles heel of the Galaxy A51. Performance feels slow with everyday activities like waiting for a website to load or updating apps. Benchmarking tests support real-world observations.
The Galaxy A51 certainly falls short when compared to flagship phones like the Galaxy S20, but also when it comes up against the A51’s main competition. That’s because Apple gave the iPhone SE the same A13 Bionic chipset as its more expensive iPhone 11, so Apple’s budget device is moving fast. The iPhone SE also beats the A51 when it comes to water resistance and wireless charging, both features that Samsung’s cheapest phone lacks. But the Galaxy A51 has its charm. It doubles the iPhone SE’s on-board storage at the starting price of the SE, giving it 128GB, compared to the SE’s 64GB for its cheapest model – and it also supports external storage. Samsung’s screen is much larger, with thinner bezels that give the phone a modern feel and feel true to the little wasted space. Battery life is also the same between the two phones. Both come in around 16 hours in the airplane mode loop video test, with more lab tests on the way. In this test, the Galaxy A51 lasted 20 minutes longer than the SE.

The Galaxy A51 also has its own on the camera front, like Samsung phones and iPhones compared: Galaxy photos are more saturated than the iPhone’s more natural tones. The iPhone SE benefits from optical image stabilization, but the A51’s four cameras give you even more shooting options than the iPhone SE. The wide angle lens is the thing that interests me the most that is missing from the SE. But in all other respects, the quality of the photo is quite close, with one edge to the other in one scenario or another. Take the iPhone SE out of the equation and the A51 looks like a Galaxy S20 Plus at a third of the price. Considering the A51 is substantially cheaper than any phone in the Galaxy S20 family, it’s an impressive overall package.
It’s hard to tell the two big phones apart at first glance, except that the A51’s front-facing camera is more obvious and the A51 uses an in-display optical fingerprint reader. By the way, the fingerprint reader was more accurate than the Galaxy S20’s ultrasonic sensor for me.
The A51 is also slightly lighter because it has a plastic back instead of glass. When I put both sides together and watched the same Netflix show in the same frame, the A51’s screen was nearly as bright, detailed and colorful as the Galaxy S20 Plus. Outdoor legibility in the afternoon sun was also fairly even.

Photos and videos look much better on the Galaxy S20, mainly because the photo resolution is sharper on the more expensive model and because it has OIS, which makes images and videos smoother and more stable. You can use Samsung’s native software on the Galaxy A51’s camera, including night mode, and the phone has options like macro and HDR. By choosing the camera setting, you can take a 48 megapixel photo. When comparing the same enlarged photos taken with both phones on my laptop screen, it’s easy to see where the Galaxy S20 is better. In other photos, photos of local flowers during my walk or dinner look good.
I appreciate that the Galaxy A51 has macro photography where the Galaxy S20 is blurry when you get too close. In some cases, getting a focused macro with the A51 was very easy. Selfies are much better on the Galaxy S20, but perfectly usable on the A51. Also, you can use portrait mode and beauty mode to soften the scene.
Disappointingly, the Galaxy A51 lacks water resistance. Most modern phones have it, although it’s common for budget devices to not be waterproof or simply ‘spill proof’. The A51’s all-day battery drains from morning to night, and it lasted an average of 16 hours, 10 minutes in Airplane mode after a three-loop video test. I’ll update this review with the results of our Wi-Fi steam lab tests when they’re complete.
Thankfully, the A51 also includes a 15W fast charger in the box, but unlike the Galaxy S20 phones, you’ll need to provide your own headphones and any USB-C to USB-C cables you might need. It also comes with a USB-A to USB-C cable.

Last year, three of the top five best-selling phones in the world were Samsung phones, according to Counterpoint Research, coming in at number three, four and five behind the iPhone XR and 11. If you live in the US , when you think of Samsung, you probably think of the Galaxy S or Note – but the Samsung phones that sold so well were the mid-range Galaxy A series phones.
Samsung is trying to sell more of these phones in the US with the $399 Galaxy A51. That price competes directly with the iPhone SE, but there are plenty of other Android phones under $500. What sets the A51 apart is Samsung’s marketing budget and partnerships. It’s available unlocked on Amazon and Samsung’s website, which is important for a mid-range Samsung device, and it’s also on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Xfinity Mobile.

Battery life. He even created a meme-filled ad to drive those points home. (You have to watch it, because the ad is really great.) The Galaxy A51, unfortunately, is not so good.
The Galaxy A51 doesn’t look or feel like a cheap phone. It is large and well bound. Samsung says the material it’s made of is called “glass,” which sounds more than it looks. It’s almost like glass, but it just has that hollow feeling you can get from plastic.
It ships with 128GB of internal storage, which is very generous at $399. In addition, you can expand it with microSD memory. There’s also a headphone jack, which is welcome at any price, but a bit more important than usual.
My favorite part of the Galaxy A51 is the screen. It’s just a well-executed 6.5-inch OLED, bright even in the sun. If you’re looking for advanced display technology — like colors that adapt to ambient lighting, high refresh rates, or even super high resolution — look elsewhere. But with a resolution of 1080 x 2400, there are more than enough pixels, even for this screen size. I’ve seen plenty of low-rent big screens on Android phones, and this isn’t one of them.
