The Samsung Galaxy A51 is one of Samsung’s biggest introductions for 2020. It was the first time Samsung’s A-series was available in the US, and it’s an affordable option for those looking a smartphone. . pay $1,000 for one.

About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 for six days on Google Fi. During the review period, the phone ran Android 10 based UI 2.1.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made of a material that Samsung calls “Glasstic”. This gives it a better quality feel than pure plastic phones, but it’s not as expensive as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It’s still plastic after all, although I can’t remember how plastic felt on other phones in this price range. The phone is smooth but not slippery and is lightweight at just 158g. In comparison, the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.

The rim of the device is made of aluminum and looks high quality. On the right side, you’ll find a power button and scroll buttons, along with a USB-C port, speakers, and microphone at the bottom. On the left side of the phone is a dual card tray, which can hold two SIM cards and an SD card up to 512GB. While most phones expand to the secondary slot to accommodate a SIM card or microSD, the A51 has two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD card tray. Good to see.

I love the crazy color and design on the back of the device. It’s very different and I appreciate the interesting dials and colors. The model I have is the Prism Crush Black, which gives off a rainbow glow when it hits the light at a right angle. It also comes in Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White, offering rainbow highlights.

Phone speakers were loud but had no sense of bass. I don’t use the speakers to listen to music directly, although the bass adds a lot of volume.

For a phone under $400, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has an impressive display. Most mid-range phones use LCD displays instead of OLED, but Samsung has managed to squeeze in a large OLED display with a high pixel count. This is a 1080p screen. Since most high-end phones default to 1080p, that didn’t bother me. Colors are vibrant and bright, which is typical of Samsung panels. It’s good.

One annoying thing about this screen is the camera cutout in the middle of the phone. While I like the punch hole cutout, Samsung decided to put a silver metal ring around the camera, so it’s a lot brighter than without the ring. It’s not a blockbuster, but it will encourage you to see it even after the show is over. I don’t know why Samsung does this.

There is an in-screen fingerprint reader on the Galaxy A51. Unfortunately, the fingerprint scanner is slow and inaccurate. It takes about two seconds for my fingerprint to register each time. Also, the accuracy rate seems to be around 50% when I use the tool, which is pretty bad. You may prefer to use the pin unlock or 2D face unlock option for speed and accuracy.

With a mid-range Exynos chip and just 4GB of RAM as standard, we didn’t expect it to run well on the Samsung Galaxy A51. After using the device for a while and running our benchmarks, our fears were confirmed.

I haven’t talked about phones in a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. You’ll experience lag when opening apps and multitasking, and there’s often a lag when scrolling through the UI. The phone was using 1.9GB of the available 4GB of RAM even with all apps closed, which is a very bad sign. In our test, we said that the latest versions of Android need around 6GB of RAM to run smoothly, and this device confirmed that.

In the benchmarks, we saw a similar story. The phone lagged behind most devices in our testing. It has lagged behind the rest of the mid-range since its launch, with the Snapdragon 700 series phones significantly outperforming the Galaxy A51’s Exynos processor. Check out the results below.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a massive 4000 mAh battery. With a low power consumption processor and low RAM, you can expect great battery life. And yes, it’s not bad, but it’s not as big as it should be. The call lasted approximately 29 hours, from 8:00 a.m. one day to 1:00 p.m. the next day. Granted, it’s not as good as phones with bigger batteries, but I’m glad it lasts all day. About four and a half hours of screen time on this device.

The A51 supports 15W charging, which isn’t fast. Considering the 18W charging Google Pixel supported in 2016, that seems a little slow for 2020. Samsung’s Galaxy S20 devices charge 25W by default these days, so I’d like to see at least 18W in the Galaxy A51.

For a phone under $400, the Galaxy A51 has great cameras and some of them are worth using. It has a 48-megapixel main sensor and 12-megapixel shooters, including wide-angle and macro lenses, a depth sensor and a 32-megapixel front camera.

The dynamic range of this camera set is good, although the image quality is a little underexposed – perhaps because the signals aren’t blown out. That being said, some camera systems can push the shadows up for good dynamic range, producing a gray haze in the shadows. Samsung phones used to do this, so I was surprised to see the A51 didn’t.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Great Screen, Bad Performance

In general, the colors are good, but the A51 has too many special colors like blue and green. The sky and the plants seem to have exploded, but some images are caricatural. Samsung has done that with its camera systems, though, and I’m not that impressed.

The deep pocket feeling is a big help, and I’m glad it works on people and animals. Although the bokeh is a bit more subtle, object detection and cropping are very accurate. I was very surprised. Hair detection remained slow, but that was normal with artificial bokeh. This mode also makes the skin as soft as I like.

The selfie camera is excellent, with good dynamic range and good colors. Sharpness is very good, although there are still a lot of colors like green and blue.

The Samsung Galaxy A51’s MSRP has dropped to just $349.99 and can be had for even less. You can find the phone for less than $300 if you shop around. At this price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung offers with the phone.

Best Buy: Samsung Galaxy A51 5g 128gb (unlocked) Prism Cube Black Sm A516uzkaxaa

With the A51 you get an excellent, well-built display, great cameras and even a decent headphone jack. It also offers three years of guaranteed software updates that guarantee support up to Android 12. However, despite the good build quality and screen, this phone’s poor performance is its Achilles heel. . And for a retail price of $349, the competition is fierce.

The iPhone SE has Apple’s latest processor and similar build quality for the same price, and the Google Pixel 4a offers an Android experience with an amazing camera for $350. And if you’re willing to spend but not $1,000, Samsung also offers the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which offers many of the same features as the Galaxy S20 for $699 before retail. If you’re looking for something similar with less power, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is available now, along with the Galaxy A51 5G – an updated version of the A51 with a faster chip and bigger battery.

If you’re interested in Samsung’s latest mid-range device, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. Build quality and battery life are maintained when upgrading to the Snapdragon 750G SoC. It costs less at $499, but the upgrades are worth it. Samsung hasn’t changed the weaker cameras, but the switch to 25W charging makes it one of our biggest Galaxy A51s.
