Update Samsung A51 2021 Price Review

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is one of Samsung’s biggest mid-range entries of 2020. This marks the first time Samsung’s A series will be available in the US, arriving as an affordable option for people who want a Samsung smartphone but don’t. To pay $1,000 to get one.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Was World Best Selling Android Phone In Q1 2020: Strategy Analytics

With so much competition in the middle, is it a good choice for the price? Find out at

About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 for six days on Google Fi. Throughout the review period, the phone ran One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made of a material that Samsung calls “Glastik”. It offers a higher quality feel than pure plastic phones, but it’s definitely not as premium as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It’s still plastic, although I don’t think it’s as plastic as other phones in this price range. The phone is smooth but not slippery, and relatively light at just 158g. For comparison, the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.

The rim of the device is aluminum and feels of good quality. On the right side, below you’ll find the USB-C port, speaker and headphone jack along with the power button and volume rocker. On the left side of the phone is the dual-SIM card tray, which holds two SIMs and an SD card up to 512GB. While most phones double the second slot to allow for a SIM card or microSD card, the A51 has two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD card tray. It looks great.

Samsung’s Latest Phone Has A Big Advantage Over The Pixel 4a

I really like the unusual color and design on the back of the device. It’s really different and I appreciate phones with interesting colors. The model I have is Prism Crush Black, which gives off a rainbow colored glow when hit by light from the right angle. It’s also available in Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White, which offer similar rainbow-colored reflections.

The phone’s speakers are loud enough but lack any sense of bass. I don’t use the speakers to listen to music directly, although the headphone jack is a big plus.

For a sub-$400 phone, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has a surprisingly good display. Most mid-range phones use LCDs instead of OLEDs, but Samsung is keeping things going with a large OLED screen with a relatively dense pixel count. It is a 1080p screen. Considering most high-end phones come in 1080p mode by default, this doesn’t bother me. Colors are punchy and bright, which is typical of Samsung panels. Very good.

One annoying thing about this display is the hole-punch camera cutout in the center of the phone. Although I like the punch hole cutouts, Samsung decided to put a silver metal ring around the camera, which is more obvious without the ring. It’s not a deal breaker, but it forces you to notice it even when the display is off. I don’t understand why Samsung did this.

The Galaxy A51 has an optical in-display fingerprint reader. Unfortunately, the fingerprint reader is slow and inaccurate. It takes about two seconds to register my fingerprint each time. Also, the accuracy rate seems to be around 50% when I’m using the device, which isn’t great. For speed and accuracy you are better off using PIN unlock or 2D face unlock option.

With a mid-range Exynos chip and just 4GB of RAM as standard, we didn’t expect the Samsung Galaxy A51 to perform well. After using the device for a while and running our benchmarks, we confirmed our fears.

I haven’t talked about phones in a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. You may experience lag when opening apps and multitasking, and frequent stuttering when swiping around the UI. Even with all apps closed the phone uses 1.9GB of 4GB of available RAM, which is a bad sign. In our testing, we concluded that modern versions of Android require around 6GB of RAM to run smoothly, and this device confirmed that.

In benchmarks, we see the same story. The phone lags behind most devices in our test. It has fallen behind the rest of the mid-range since its launch, with the Snapdragon 700 series of phones outperforming the Galaxy A51’s Exynos processor. See the results below.

Samsung Galaxy A51, A51 5g, A52 Get June 2023 Security Update

The Samsung Galaxy A51 packs a relatively large 4,000mAh battery. With a low-powered CPU and a small amount of RAM, you’d think the device would get killer battery life. And honestly, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as good as it should have been. The phone call lasted about 29 hours from 8 am one day to 1 pm the next day. It’s not as good as phones with bigger batteries, but I’m glad it lasts at least a full day. I got about four and a half hours of screen-on time on this device.

The A51 supports 15W charging, which isn’t fast. Considering the 18W charging the original Google Pixel supported in 2016, it’s a bit slow for 2020. Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S20 devices charge at 25W by default these days, so I’d like to see at least 18W on the Galaxy A51.

For a sub-$400 phone, the Galaxy A51 has some decent cameras, and some of them to boot. The main 48mp sensor bins 12MP images, along with wide-angle and macro lenses, a depth sensor and a 32MP front-facing camera.

Dynamic range looks good with this camera set, although photos feel a bit underexposed – perhaps to avoid blowing out highlights. Some camera systems can compress shadows too much for dynamic range, causing annoying gray casts in shadows. Samsung phones traditionally do this, so I’m pleasantly surprised that the A51 doesn’t.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Receives Android 11 Update A Month Early

Colors are generally good, but the A51 overfills some colors like blues and greens. It tends to make the sky and plants pop, but it also makes some images look cartoony. Samsung does this all the time with its camera systems, though I’m not really surprised.

The depth sensor seems to help a bit, and I’m glad it works more for people and animals. Bokeh certainly looks more natural, object detection and cutouts are very accurate. I was surprised. Hair detection remains unclear, but it’s mostly artificial bokeh. This mod softens the skin more than I would like.

The selfie camera is also good with decent dynamic range and color. Sharpness is excellent, although colors like greens and blues are oversaturated.

The MSRP of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has dropped to just $349.99 and is available at an even lower price. You can easily find a phone under $300 if you shop around. At that price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung is offering in the phone.

Samsung Galaxy A32 5g Review: Faded Smartphone Is Not The Best Choice

With the A51, you get an excellent screen, decent build quality, some decent cameras and even a headphone jack. It also offers a three-year software update guarantee that guarantees support up to at least Android 12. However, while the build quality and screen are good, sub-par performance is the Achilles heel of this phone. And at a retail price of $349, the competition is very high.

The iPhone SE has Apple’s latest processor and the same great build quality for the same price, and the Google Pixel 4a has a great Android experience and a great camera for $350. And if you’re willing to spend more but not $1,000, Samsung also offers the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features as the full Galaxy S20 for $699 before trade-in. If you’re looking for something similar with less power, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is out just like the Galaxy A51 5G – an upgraded version of the A51 with a faster chipset and bigger battery.

If you want Samsung’s latest mid-range device, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. It maintains its solid build quality and good battery life while upgrading to the Snapdragon 750G SoC. You’ll pay a bit more at $499, but the improvements are worth the bump. Samsung hasn’t made many changes to the weak peripheral cameras, but the switch to 25W charging solved one of our biggest Galaxy A51 gripes.
