This particular phone was launched alongside the Galaxy A30, unlike the A50, the Galaxy A30 didn’t make it to Germany. At the end of last year, the successor to the Galaxy A50 was announced: the Galaxy A51. Does this mean it’s still worth picking up the Samsung Galaxy A50 in 2020?
Samsung has launched a number of smartphones over the past few years that have been well received by consumers and have come down significantly in price over time. In our previous two articles, we took a closer look at the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy A10 and analyzed whether these two smartphones can still compete in other markets these days. In this article, we turn our attention to Samsung’s mid-range smartphone, the Galaxy A50.

Like the Galaxy A10, the A50 also belongs to the Samsung A series, which includes entry-level and mid-range smartphones. While the A10 is firmly rooted in the entry-level segment, the A50 takes at least one step up in terms of price and features. In our Samsung Galaxy A50 review, we praised the long battery life provided by the built-in 4,000 mAh battery, which allows the phone to easily last two days of moderate to heavy use.

In comparison, the Galaxy A10 comes with a 3,400 mAh battery. Although he still loses to his older brother, it makes a lot of sense. Samsung also added a 15W fast charger to the Galaxy A50, thanks to which the Galaxy A50 will be up and running again in less than an hour. Galaxy A50 buyers will have to go with wireless charging as this feature is currently only available on Samsung’s flagship models such as the Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 Plus or S20 Ultra.
In addition to boasting a sleek and solid design, the 6.4-inch AMOLED display on the Galaxy A50 impressed us during our review. It provides the user with Full HD+ resolution and a brightness level that makes the display readable even in bright sunlight. It’s not all a bed of roses, though, as it’s not quite happy with its integrated fingerprint sensor and facial recognition capabilities. Both unlocking options had their drawbacks and did not always work quickly and reliably.
However, this model offers you a triple camera setup with a 25MP wide-angle (f/2.2), a 5MP telephoto lens, and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens (f/2.4). A separate selfie camera is integrated into the display as a single step. It can be said that the number of cameras in this package offers a considerable amount of flexibility when it comes to capturing images.
Just in terms of numbers, the A50 offers one more camera on the back than its successor, the Galaxy A51, released in 2020 for less than 300 euros ($340). However, the A51 ditches the telephoto lens for a macro camera and bokeh sensor, which I find less useful in real life than on paper.

Repairing the Galaxy A50 is not an easy task. For example, if you want to replace the battery of your Samsung Galaxy A50, there will be very few problems: the integrated Samsung battery is not easy to remove.
At launch, the Galaxy A50 had Android 9 Pie out of the box. Over time, Samsung’s own One UI (version 1.1) got into the device. According to the Android update schedule, Android 10 should be available on the Galaxy A50 from April/May this year – and with it One UI 2.0. At least for now, Samsung’s mid-range device will still be updated in this regard.
As of June 10, Android 11 beta is out and will be activated for various smartphones. Galaxy A50 has not yet received the latest version update.
The Galaxy A50 was priced at €349 ($396) at launch. The price is now logically much higher: online retailers such as Amazon offer the smartphone for less than 300 euros ($340). Basically, the price is between €300 ($340) and €400 ($453), depending on where you look, although it’s perfectly reasonable to avoid prices higher than the original suggested retail price.

If you’re looking to buy a refurbished smartphone instead of a new phone, here are a few things to consider. The biggest difference between the two types of phones is this: Previously, refurbished headphones were used. There are many reasons to return these devices. For example, the software may not be valid, or the smartphone may be returned simply because the owner bought the wrong model. Most importantly, improved equipment was used, albeit at a higher level than second-hand equipment.
As the name suggests, the refurbished smartphones are first and foremost flawless. That includes software bugs and design tweaks – you won’t find any funny malware installed on it. The most important thing is to buy these tools from verified sellers. Using this method, you can be sure that there will be no errors with this device.
One of the advantages of refurbished equipment compared to new is lower costs. This is reasonable because all these tools have already been used. In some cases, manufacturers like Apple change the smartphone. However, Amazon offers refurbished devices under its “Amazon Renewed Warranty” program.
Forget my comparison between Galaxy A10 and Galaxy A50 in the first part. Yes, even though both are A-series devices, there is a big difference between them. The Galaxy A10 remains an entry-level device, while the A50 is a mid-range phone – which is clearly reflected in its price. While you’ll have to pay around €150 ($170) for the Galaxy A10, the Samsung Galaxy A50 retails for €300 ($340).

If we want to put the features and performance of a sword tool, we need to look at tools that fall into the same price category. An example is the new Galaxy A51, which we would like to present to you here.
In direct comparison to its predecessor, Samsung has expanded the display on the A51, reducing the bezels and giving the user more viewing space. In addition to the Bluetooth 5.0 connection, the impressive battery life has remained the same. The new version has a 4,000 mAh battery that should be able to power users through the day.

For a mid-range device under €300 ($340), the Samsung Galaxy A50 offers decent features. In addition to a good 4,000 mAh battery, buyers can look forward to a quality design and enough memory if they want to push the device to the maximum.
At the end of the day, though, the Galaxy A51 is available for a bit more. This gives you a larger display and a quad-camera setup instead of a triple-camera island, though this has a somewhat dubious “advantage.” Generally, you get the same device again – just because it’s new. You can hedge your bets by receiving new updates over a longer period of time.
So if you are flirting with the idea of a Galaxy A50, the A51 is better for you. The Galaxy A50 has been updated to Android 10, but let’s see if it will be able to support Android 11 upon release. For the Galaxy A51, we can be sure that it will be on the Android 11 list.
