Now that we’re done with our tests, let’s discuss what worked and what didn’t in our Galaxy A50s review.
The Samsung Galaxy A50s has almost the same dimensions as the original Galaxy A50. It’s a paltry 3 grams heavier, and perhaps that’s the added weight of the 48MP camera sensor that replaces the Galaxy A50’s 25MP main shooter.
In the past, the design of the Galaxy A50 impressed us a lot and today we can appreciate it even more. Indeed, phones in general have become uncomfortably large and bulky this year, and the Galaxy A50, with its smooth figure and ergonomic curves, is a pure pleasure to handle.
Judging by the fact that we’re constantly getting inquiries from consumers looking for a “brand” option that’s convenient for them or their parents, the design should appeal to consumers who choose the phone off-the-shelf or from personal recommendations.

The material used for the rear panel is still plastic, but Samsung differentiates the ‘s’ variant with a stylish gradient that spices things up without going overboard. Add to that a fascinating AMOLED display and you have a winner!
Just like the Galaxy Note10, the power button now functions as a Bixby button. However, you can assign it as a regular power button (Settings >> Advanced >> Side Button) or even set the double-tap action to directly launch any app you prefer.
The Galaxy A50s also has a fingerprint sensor and a USB Type-C port on the bottom that can accept 15W adaptive fast charging. This time, Samsung also includes a protective case in the box.
The optical in-display fingerprint sensor on the A50s didn’t respond very consistently at first, but it worked well after we reconfigured it. This isn’t the fastest in-display fingerprint sensor in its class, but after a few weeks of use, it’s still our preferred unlock mode on our A50s. In addition, the Galaxy A50s also has Face Unlock and it works quite well.

Another strong point is the Full HD+ AMOLED screen (good quality). The display settings now list Samsung’s new preset color options – Vivid and Natural – of which Natural works best for us. Samsung doesn’t offer Gorilla Glass for any other form of scratch resistance, but the display has an oleophobic coating to keep smudges at bay.
Contrast is high and the software uses stunning AMOLED blacks with features like always-on display and dark mode.
The display has a notch for the front-facing camera, and the chin at the bottom is slightly thicker than what you get from rival phones from Realme and Xiaomi. In other words, it’s not as prominent as what you’d get on pop-up camera phones like the Realme X or the Redmi K20.
We enjoyed streaming video on our Galaxy A50s and had no problem using it outdoors in direct sunlight.

The Galaxy A50 was powered by an octa-core Exynos 9610 chipset, and the A50s gets a slight upgrade: the Exynos 9611. The processor’s clock frequency and core architecture remain unchanged, but Samsung claims there are graphics improvements (the cores of GPU Mali G72 are perhaps longer). Samsung has doubled the storage to 128GB for the 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM variants (about 112GB is free on the user end).
Samsung is also adding Game Booster to improve PUBG game performance. In our tests, PUBG Mobile ran with noticeable frame drops on HD and High settings, but performance was smooth when we switched to Balanced and High settings.
The Galaxy A50s might not be an option for hardcore gamers, but it will work well for moderate and heavy users who don’t necessarily need to run heavy games at maximum settings.

Already the A50s also gets the full package including Samsung Pay (not the mini, but the full version) and the edge launcher.
One UI is one of our favorite Android skins, and it certainly gives Samsung a huge advantage over phones from Xiaomi, Realme, OPPO, and Vivo that are still pushing shoddy iOS-like interfaces.
There are several apps pre-installed on the phone, but users have an option to uninstall them. For anyone wondering, the Galaxy A50s is Widevine DRM L1 certified and supports HD streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
One of the biggest upgrades to the Galaxy A50s is its camera. To help it compete with the sea of 48MP camera phones, Samsung is adding one to the phone. The benchmark apps confirm that Samsung is using a Sony IMX582 sensor (the same one used in the Redmi K20 and Vivo Z1x).

The main camera is paired with an ultra-wide-angle camera with a 123-degree FoV. The third sensor is a basic depth sensor to improve portrait shots. As with most other affordable phones, these extra sensors are more than just an afterthought.
The camera app is modeled after the one Samsung uses on its high-end phones and has premium features like best shot suggestions, scene optimizer, super slow motion videos and a document scanner, in addition to the usual ones like Super Night mode .
In proper lighting, the Galaxy A50 can click well-measured photos with decent texture and a decent amount of detail. These images look better on a phone than when blown up on a bigger screen.
The selfie camera does a great job outdoors and in well-lit scenes. Not so much with uncomfortable or low lighting.

The Galaxy A50s has a 4000 mAh battery and that’s a pretty adequate capacity considering modern standards and requirements. The battery accepts fast charging. Samsung has a 15W adaptive fast charger in the box and you can also use a USB PD charger for faster charging.
The speaker of the phone is loud enough and offers good audio quality. The audio from the headphones is also pretty amazing.
The Samsung Galaxy A50s looks like a very premium phone and adds iterative improvements to the popular Galaxy A50. The phone is stylish, very comfortable to handle and flaunts Samsung’s valuable trademarks. We also saw a significant improvement in the software running on the phone.
That said, when it comes to raw performance, it falls short of internet exclusive options like the Realme XT and Redmi K20. And the camera, while not crucial, doesn’t really give it an edge.
