Update Samsung A50s Details Review

Update Samsung A50s Details Review – We started this year with an avalanche of affordable Galaxy M-series and A-series smartphones from Samsung, part of the company’s strategy to fight Xiaomi, Realme and others on their own terms. Samsung pretty much covers every strategic price point between Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 20,000 in a very short time, sometimes with multiple options, thanks to the large number of models and variants launched. It’s been quite a while since the rush to the market, and all Samsung’s competitors have updated their records, so it’s inevitable that we’ll see some updated models from the Korean giant.

The new Samsung Galaxy A50s starts at Rs. 22,999, which is a slight increase in cost over the Galaxy A50 (Review). It joined the party shortly after the launch of the high-profile Redmi K20 (Review) and several other flagship-quality phones have also seen price cuts, placing them in this segment as well. Choose any of the following phones with a budget of around Rs. 25,000? We review the Samsung Galaxy A50 to find out.

There isn’t much new when it comes to the look and feel of the Samsung Galaxy A50s. When we reviewed the Galaxy M20 (Review), one of Samsung’s first aggressive pushes, we noticed how generic it was and how it departed from the company’s previous designs. Also, the Galaxy A50s could easily be mistaken for many of today’s big phone brands, no matter which angle you look at it.

Samsung Galaxy A50 And Galaxy A30 Review

The front of this phone is almost all-screen with a small camera cutout at the top (Samsung calls this design Infinity-U). The corners of the screen are rounded and the bottom is quite thick, while the side and top bezels are narrower. The sides are very slightly curved, and we’re interested to note that this is one of the few phones we’ve reviewed recently that doesn’t have a plastic screen protector attached, which we don’t mind and even appreciate.

The back has a personality trait that Samsung chose to display – an off-center geometric pattern of intersecting lines with different color tones in each segment. There are three options to choose from: Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet – our review unit is the black version, but the back colors are different shades of grey.

Thankfully, this design isn’t as prone to picking up smudges and fingerprints as the Galaxy A50’s glassy finish, but it still needs to be wiped down a few times a day to keep it looking good. There’s still a very slight prismatic effect in certain lights, though it’s more subtle than the psychedelic reflections we saw on this phone’s predecessor.

At the bottom is a USB Type-C port, along with a 3.5mm audio jack and a single speaker. The tray on the left contains two nano-SIMs and a microSD card slot. Both the power and volume buttons are on the right side and the top is empty.

Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: A $350 Phone That Gives Galaxy A Whole New Meaning

At 166 grams and just 7.7 mm thick, the Galaxy A50s is surprisingly easy to hold and use. You may have to stretch a bit to reach the top of the 6.4-inch screen, but otherwise we have no complaints. The build quality is also good, although this phone still feels plastic and doesn’t feel very premium. There is also no mention of what type of glass was used for the screen.

We didn’t find any scratches on the frame or back during the review, but we will be using this phone with a plastic case. Fortunately one is included in the retail box. Samsung also provides a 10W charger, USB Type-C cable, 3.5mm wired headset, SIM ejector, and quick start guide.

The first thing you’ll notice about this phone when you turn it on is the sharp and bright Super AMOLED screen. It’s 6.4 inches in diameter, but that reduces to about 6.2 inches if you measure it with the rounded corners. The resolution is full HD+, 1080×2340. There’s a notch at the top for the front-facing camera and a conveniently placed built-in fingerprint sensor.

Samsung used its own octa-core Exynos 9611 processor, which seems to be a minor upgrade from the Exynos 9610 found in the Galaxy A50. It gets four 1.74GHz ARM Cortex-A53 cores and four 2.3GHz Cortex-A73 cores and Mali-G72 graphics. This chip has the same CPU, GPU and LTE capabilities as its predecessor, but supports higher camera resolutions.

This brings us to one of the phone’s great new features, the 48-megapixel f/2 primary rear camera. It is joined by an 8-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera is also expanded with a resolution of 32 megapixels and an aperture value of f/2.

There are two variants of this phone, but both come with 128GB of storage. The only difference is that you get either 4GB for Rs. 22,999 or 6GB RAM Rs. 24. Unless you run a lot of heavy apps and games, you probably won’t see much of a difference.

The battery is quite large at 4000mAh and 15W fast charging is possible, although there is a 10W charger in the box. Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC and FM radio are all available.

Our unit comes with version 1.5 of Samsung’s One UI software, running Android 9 with the August 2019 security update. One UI is primarily designed for large-screen phones, and while it looks fresh and modern , we’re not fans of big icons and wide spaces. Fortunately, you can adjust the size and density of home screens and app drawers through settings.

Samsung Galaxy A50: Is It Still Worth Buying?

There’s a lot of white space in the menus and the large screen seems underutilized, especially in the notification area and the Settings app, which require a lot of scrolling. However, the ability to pull down menus and controls so that even the top rows are accessible by touch is welcome. There are also many hidden features, such as Secure Folder, Samsung Pay, Kid’s space, Night Mode, floating apps and clone Dual Messenger app with independent contacts.

A long press on the right power button will bring up the Bixby voice assistant. To turn off the phone, there’s a small power button on the screen in the hotkeys area, which you can drag down from the top of the screen to reveal it. There’s also a Bixby home screen to the left of the first home screen, with useful panels like sports scores and reminders, but also a lot of promotional content.

With Bixby Routines, you can string together multiple commands using simple “if…then” conditions. For example, you can tell the Galaxy A50s to change Wi-Fi and Bluetooth status, sound profile, display customization, lock screen shortcuts and accessibility settings, and perform certain actions, such as unlocking of website or sending SMS. All of these things can be activated with a single gesture when you leave or enter a location, connect to an accessory, open a specific app, receive a phone call, and/or pair with a specific which is a Bluetooth device.

The Super AMOLED panel allows for an ambient display, although by default, the phone is set to one touch to view time and status icons in standby mode. You can set it to always be visible or only at certain times.

You also have a lot of control over what content is shown on the lock screen, as well as some animated wallpapers or photo collections that rotate. Lock screen stories are pieces of content that are slightly advertising and appear every time you wake up your phone. It can be disabled during the initial Android setup process.

Samsung also decided to introduce its Edge Panels feature, previously only seen on high-end phones with curved glass edges. This thin, visible tab can be placed on either side of the screen and slide in to reveal one or more vertical strips containing links to contacts or apps, thumbnails, or content feeds. Additional bezels can be downloaded from the Samsung Galaxy Store.

There are only a few pre-installed apps: Facebook, Netflix, OneDrive, and the Samsung Galaxy Store and Game Launcher. While setting up the phone, we were told that apps “sleep” if they’re not used for at least three days, meaning they won’t update their content and you may not receive notifications. It can be disabled in the battery settings, but it’s worth noting that the default setting is unusual and can cause unexpected notification delays.
