The Samsung Galaxy A50s doesn’t seem like a definitive update to the Galaxy A50, but rather an incremental upgrade. Much attention has been paid to bringing the 48MP camera to the A-series. So it’s a very refined phone from the A50, but it doesn’t come close to the competition’s offering.

Galaxy A50 Review: Samsung’s Most Value For Money Mid Ranger Yet

Samsung announced its Galaxy A50 (opens in new tab) refresh from earlier this year (opens in new tab) – the Galaxy A50s are now on sale. The A50s brings some of the camera features found in the company’s premium phones to the mid-range segment. There is a new chipset that powers the phone with support for Samsung Pay.

We were very impressed with the Galaxy A50’s display and build quality, but the cameras left us asking for more. Likewise, Samsung’s OneUI doesn’t feel polished in regular use, which is often a pain for buyers.

So will this incremental update bring any unique features to the table or will it just be another phone from the South Korean electronics manufacturer? Here’s what we found.

The Samsung Galaxy A50s starts at Rs 22,999 with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage. The second variant has 6GB RAM and 128GB storage to boot and is priced at Rs 24,999. The Galaxy A50 was launched at the same price point, but it retails for Rs 18,490 (4GB + 64GB) and Rs 21,490 (6GB + 64GB). Officially.

Samsung Galaxy A50 Update Improves Fingerprint Sensor, Brings November Security Patch: Report

The A50s is available through leading online retailers, Samsung India Online Store and Samsung Opera House in Bangalore.

It comes in three colors – Prism Crush Black, White and Violet. Samsung sent us the Prism Crush Violet color of the top-end variant (6GB RAM + 128GB) for our review.

Following in the footsteps of the Galaxy A50 series, the A50 features a glossy and reflective coating that creates visually appealing colors in different hues. This time, however, the rear panel has been tweaked to include a prism-like design that only enhances reflective colors. It’s not as flashy as the design on the A50 and looks decent.

Because of the reflective layer, the back is susceptible to fingerprints and smudges and it can be very difficult to keep the back of the phone clean.

The top-left corner of the phone houses the camera module followed by the LED flash. The company’s initials are engraved and centered on the back panel. It’s the same setup we saw on the A50.

The volume rocker and power button are placed on the right edge, while the SIM card slot is on the left edge.

There are noticeable bezels around the display with a U-shaped notch cutout. The bottom edge of the phone houses the 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port and speaker grill. At the top of the rest is another.

The Galaxy A50s has the same dimensions as the Galaxy A50, 158.5 x 74.5 x 7.7 mm and weighs 166 grams. As it is soft in hand and not too attached, one can hold it and use it comfortably.

Due to its sleek profile, the Galaxy A50s feels light in the hand and the prism-like reflective design on the back is slightly toned down from the previous generation.

The Samsung Galaxy A50s sports a 6.4-inch Full HD+ resolution screen (2340 x 1080 pixels) using a Super AMOLED panel. The u-shaped notch cutout on the front offers a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a screen-to-body ratio of 91.6%.

In terms of size, we hope it’s the same display we saw on the Galaxy A50. If this is true, the screen has a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 layer for added protection.

We were impressed with the display performance of the Galaxy A50, and similarly, the Super AMOLED screen on the A50s does not disappoint. The display can produce bright, vibrant colors, but sometimes tends to go on the warmer side of things. However, the u-shaped notch known as the Infinity-U cutout of the display does not hinder the overall viewing experience.

Samsung offers users a wide range of options to adjust the display according to the comfort of their eyes. These options include a blue light filter mode, a dark mode, and two color modes: natural and vivid. The phone also has the option to enable edge panels and supports edge lighting for notifications, which is an added plus.

Overall, if one goes for the Galaxy A50s, they won’t be disappointed with the viewing experience it offers.

One of the most important updates to the Galaxy A50s is its primary camera. It’s now a 48MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.0, and although Samsung hasn’t officially announced it, the sensor used here is the Sony IMX582.

Apart from the main camera, there is an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 5MP depth camera with f/2.2 aperture. Both these cameras use the Sony IMX616 sensor.

The camera app has a dedicated night mode, better shot, scene enhancement and 30 presets and a super steady video mode. On the front, there is a 32MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture.

Now, the difference between the IMX582 sensor in Sony’s A50s and the IMX586 in phones like the Realme X, Mi A3 or OnePlus 7 is negligible. Both sensors have similar image capture capabilities, but the IMX582 records up to 4K at 30fps, while the IMX586 can do 4K at 60fps.

Samsung’s camera improvements improve the overall photography experience on the A50s. During the day, the camera produced some beautiful photos, however, the same cannot be said about its performance in dark environments.

The main camera produces natural-looking photos with a consistent color profile and vibrant processing. This is also because the ultra-wide lens does not support focus valves.

At night, photos taken on the A50 came out noisy, and even the camera app took a while to focus on the subject we shot. Night mode within the camera app does a great job of enhancing photos and reducing noise at night. However, this is not enough to improve the night performance of the A50s camera.

Since the phone has a 48MP sensor, users can go to the camera app, tap the Photo aspect ratio button and select 3:4H from the list of options to take a full 48MP photo.

We spent some time with the Galaxy A50s and here are our first impressions.

The Samsung Galaxy A50s immediately catches the eye, thanks to its glossy back panel with a prism-like design. It has distinct areas that light up in different colors when light falls on it from different angles. The Prism Crush Violet variant is the one to pick for its glossy reflective profile and luminous color scheme, but if you prefer a less ornate finish, the Prism Crush Black and Prism Crush White will serve you well.

The prism design stands out, but the glass-like panel is a smudge magnet and, like its predecessor, gets covered in fingerprints in no time. The build quality is solid, and the sleek profile ensures a comfortable grip. The curved back panel seamlessly meets the frame, giving the Galaxy A50s a more premium feel.

Samsung’s new offering features a 6.4-inch full-HD+ (1080×2340) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display that offers vibrant colors and impressive brightness output and good sunlight readability. However, the in-display fingerprint sensor was a bit slower than what we’ve seen on other phones of the same price.
