Galaxy A52 Vs Galaxy A50 / A50s: Just Upgrade Already!
When it comes to the look and feel of the Samsung Galaxy A50s, there isn’t much new. When we reviewed the Galaxy M20 ( review ), one of the first products Samsung pushed aggressively, we commented on how ordinary it felt and how it was a departure from the company’s previous designs. Likewise, the Galaxy A50s could easily be mistaken for any of the many phones from today’s big brands, no matter what angle you look at it from.
The front of the phone is almost all screen, with a small camera notch at the top (Samsung calls this design “Infinity-U”). The corners of the screen are rounded and the chin is quite thick, while the side and top bezels are much slimmer. The edges are slightly curved, which we noted with interest, and it’s one of the few phones we’ve reviewed recently that doesn’t have a plastic screen protector attached to it, which we don’t mind and even appreciate.
On the back, we have a personality that Samsung has decided to show off – cross-hatching in an off-center geometric pattern, with each section a different shade of color. There are three options: Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet – our review unit was the black version, but the back was colored in different shades of grey.
Thankfully, the design isn’t as prone to smudges and fingerprints as the Galaxy A50’s mirrored surface, but it still needs a few wipes a day to keep it looking good. There’s still a very slight prismatic effect in some lighting, though it’s much more subtle than the trippy reflections we saw on the phone’s predecessor.

There’s a USB Type-C port on the bottom, along with a 3.5mm audio jack and a speaker. The compartment on the left has two Nano-SIM card slots and a microSD card slot. Both the power button and volume rocker are on the right, and the top is empty.
Weighing 166 grams and only 7.7 mm thick, the Galaxy A50s is very easy to handle and use. You may have to stretch a bit to get to the top of the 6.4-inch screen, but otherwise we have no complaints. The build quality is also quite good, although the phone still feels plasticky and not very premium. There is also no mention of the type of glass used for the screen.
During our review period, we didn’t see any scratches or scuffs on the frame or back panel, but we would use a phone with a plastic case. Thankfully one is included in the box. Samsung also includes a 10W charger, USB Type-C cable, 3.5mm wired headphones, a SIM eject tool and a quick start guide.
The first thing you notice when you open this phone is its sharp, bright Super AMOLED display. It measures 6.4 inches, but if you measure with rounded corners, it will be trimmed to about 6.2 inches. Full HD+ with a resolution of 1080×2340. There is a notch on the top for the front camera, and the integrated fingerprint sensor is conveniently located.
Samsung Galaxy S9 Review: The Price Is Right
Samsung uses its own octa-core Exynos 9611 processor, which appears to be a minor update to the Exynos 9610 found in the Galaxy A50. You get four 1.74GHz ARM Cortex-A53 cores and four 2.3GHz Cortex-A73 cores, along with Mali-G72 graphics. The chip has the same CPU, GPU and LTE capabilities as its predecessor, but supports higher camera resolutions.
Which brings us to one of the phone’s big new features, its 48-megapixel f/2 primary rear camera. It is joined by an 8-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera has also been upgraded to 32 megapixel resolution and f/2 aperture.
The phone comes in two models, but both come with 128GB of storage. The only difference is that you can get 4GB for Rs. 22,999 or 6GB RAM for Rs. 24,999. This is similar to how Samsung offers the Galaxy A50, and we don’t see the need to have two options that are so similar. Unless you run a lot of heavy apps and games, you’re unlikely to notice much of a difference.
The battery is quite large at 4000mAh and can handle 15W fast charging, although there is a 10W charger in the box. Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC and FM radio are included.

Our device came with version 1.5 of Samsung’s One UI software, running on top of Android 9 with the August 2019 security update installed. An interface designed primarily for phones with larger screens, and while it looks fresh and modern, we’re not a fan of the oversized icons and wide spacing you see everywhere. Thankfully, you can adjust the size and density of the home screen and app drawer through the settings.
There’s a lot of white space in the menus, and it feels like the big screen isn’t being used optimally, especially in the notification screen and settings apps, which require a lot of scrolling. That said, the ability to scroll down menus and controls so that even the top row is within reach is very welcome. There are also many hidden features, including Safe Folder, Samsung Pay, Kids Space, Night Mode, floating apps and a clone of the Dual Messenger app with a separate contact list.
