No matter how much Samsung wants you to believe, the Galaxy series doesn’t begin and end with the S and Note lines. Samsung smartphones may get all the attention, but you don’t become the biggest smartphone manufacturer on the planet by ignoring those who don’t own the best parts of the latest smartphones.

That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it’s amazing. At first glance, it looks like the Galaxy S10, but inside it offers a fast enough experience without the need for a graphical upgrade. It’s an absolute steal at £310 and worth considering if the S and Note range are too expensive for you.

The Galaxy A series is very chaotic. All you really need to know is that the current Galaxy A50 is the second best in the family after the A70. It will be the third when the A80 is launched later this month. This makes it better than the A10, A20e and A40 overall.

Which literally translates to a 6.4-inch device similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10, but with a notch on the inside. The 2.3GHz octa-core Exynos 9610 processor running the phone is similar to the Snapdragon 675 mistakenly running on the Galaxy A70. The phone is also supported by 4GB of RAM and 128GB of inbuilt storage.

Impressive for the price, the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with three cameras on the back with a depth sensor and an ultra-wide lens along with a 25-megapixel primary camera. The A50 also comes with Samsung’s usual Super AMOLED display, which is impressive as rivals in the price range often fall for cheaper IPS screens. That’s when it turns on the in-screen fingerprint reader.

So what’s the harm? Well, a very reasonable £310 you’d never know. It’s actually cheaper than many of Samsung’s other smartphone offerings, so its closest competition comes from third-party manufacturers.

First up is our favorite mid-range device, the Google Pixel 3a. A scaled-down version of Google’s smartphone, this version is slightly slower, less well-designed and lacks some of the features that cost £399, but sells for around £350. Similarly, the P30 Lite is a scaled-down version of Huawei’s P30 series and retails for £329.

On the other hand, there is the mid-range smartphone Xiaomi Pocophone F1. This is a phone that costs just 9,329 despite having Qualcomm’s fastest processor in 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which starts at £380 but has been getting cheaper lately.

It’s a tough competition, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 is off to a great start with looks that owe a lot to the Galaxy S10. This means there’s almost no bezel to speak of, although this version does see the return of the notch for the front-facing camera. There are a lot of notches here, though – a small indentation at the top of the phone.

Like the S10, there’s a small chin on the bottom of the phone, but it’s noticeable because there’s no talk panel on the other side. The back is slightly curved and plastic rather than glass, which should make it more durable. This is the phone you want to protect with cases.

The most interesting thing for a smartphone of this price is that the fingerprint reader is built into the screen, that is, it is not displayed on the smartphone itself. Just slide your thumb across the bottom of the screen and the phone unlocks – maybe a little slower than a regular phone, but still works great for the price.

In terms of other features, as usual, Samsung is doing very well. Storage space that can be increased? Note: microSD card up to 512GB is supported. A headphone jack? Current and accurate. Dual SIM? Yes, grandmother. The two gripes I can find are that it’s not waterproof and doesn’t support wireless charging, but you can’t have everything at this price.

If there’s one thing Samsung is known for with its phones, it’s screen quality. And that Super AMOLED display doesn’t disappoint – you’re now looking at a 6.4-inch panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080.

The screen displays 100% of the sRGB spectrum, and in color mode, the main screen precisely controls the color display. The other modes – Cinematic and Adapt – are a bit more flashy, but you can’t say you don’t have that choice.

As with AMOLED, contrast is excellent and brightness isn’t bad either, reaching a maximum brightness of 560 cd/m2 in auto mode (although it shuts off at 350 cd/m2 when you set it to the brightest, presumably because of the battery).

All in all, it’s as good a screen as you’d expect for the price – much better thanks to the addition of an in-screen fingerprint reader.

Before answering this question, I will give a brief overview. The Samsung Galaxy A50 is powered by an Exynos 9610 processor clocked at 2.3GHz with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. In everyday use, it feels smooth, unlocks quickly and switches between apps easily. But how does it work on the scoreboard?

With one obvious exception, there are many. The Samsung Galaxy A50 beats everything in its price range (including the £60 more expensive Galaxy A70), but not so much as to make things too drastic.

Exceptions: Xiaomi Pocophone F1 price 329 wipes the floor with everyone in this price range. Unsurprisingly, it uses the same chip that was in the Samsung Galaxy S9 in the US last year, but it’s definitely something you should do if you want to get the most value for your money.

It’s a similar situation when it comes to recording graphics, although here the Galaxy A50 is slightly cheaper, falling behind the Pixel 3a and the Snapdragon 8.1-based Nokia 8.1. The Pocophone F1 is the clear winner.

But the Samsung Galaxy A50 has an important ace up its sleeve, and that’s battery life. Our video didn’t really last long enough to charge everything, so it ran a second time, clocking in at 21 hours and 21 minutes before the last 4,000mAh cell died. With just the Galaxy A70’s extra 500mAh, it manages a whopping 25 hours and 22 minutes.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 treats us to not one, not two, but three rear cameras. The 25-megapixel main camera, f / 1.7, is supported by an ultra-wide eight-megapixel on the right and a 5-megapixel depth sensor, f / 2.2. It’s nice that one of them is telephoto zoom, but I’m probably asking for the moon on a stick given the generous capabilities we’re given for the price.

This makes it a great match for the P 329 Huawei P30 Lite with three cameras (48 megapixels, aperture / 1.8 with an eight-megapixel wide-angle lens and a two-megapixel depth sensor). And while the Samsung Galaxy A50’s shots look great from afar when zoomed in, it’s clear that the Huawei P30 Lite has the upper hand.

Which is not to say that the Galaxy A50 is bad by any means. Given Huawei’s uncertain future for Android, you’d think a little loss of loyalty would be worth it.

When shooting indoors in low light, the cameras are evenly matched, both delivering images full of detail, accurate colors and minimal noise. Both perform well, although Huawei again has a slight edge.

As for video, the Galaxy A50 is capable of recording Full HD at 30 frames per second. If you want 4K or 60fps (not both at the same time, mind you), you’ll have to give up 60fps on the Galaxy A70. By the way, the video quality is very good, and the image stabilization seems strong enough for hand shake.

The front-facing selfie camera also deserves some praise. It’s a 25-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture. It can be more than expected for Skype calls and selfies, and even with the beauty mode turned off, Samsung still insists on removing all your wrinkles and giving you that amazing glow in the Samsung camera app.

For some, this can be considered a plus, but we warn those who abuse Instagram with the smartphone’s beauty mode: you will not fool anyone.

However, if that’s all you can say that’s wrong with the Galaxy A50, then Samsung is doing something right. Absolutely correct.

For £310 you get an impressive smartphone that looks great, has a great screen, is fast enough for most people and takes decent photos. This is a phone that is more than enough for most people.
