Update Samsung A50 Mobile Features Review – We started this year with an avalanche of affordable Galaxy M-series and A-series smartphones from Samsung as part of the company’s strategy to fight Xiaomi, Realme and others on their own terms. Samsung has taken almost all strategic price points between Rs. 8000 and Rs. 20,000 in a very short time, sometimes with more than one variant thanks to the large number of models and variants. It’s been a while since this release wave and all of Samsung’s competitors have updated their plans, so it was inevitable that we’d see some updated models from the Korean giant.
The all-new Samsung Galaxy A50s start at Rs. 22,999, which is a slight price hike over the Galaxy A50 (Review). The high-profile Redmi K20 (Review) joins the party shortly after its launch, and several other flagship phones have also seen price cuts in the segment. Which of these phones should you choose with a budget of around Rs. 25,000? We take a look at the Samsung Galaxy A50s to find out.
Update Samsung A50 Mobile Features Review
There is not much new when it comes to the look and feel of the Samsung Galaxy A50s. When we reviewed the Galaxy M20 ( Review ), one of Samsung’s first aggressive pushes, we commented on how generic it was and how it departed from the company’s previous designs. Likewise, the Galaxy A50s could easily be mistaken for any of a number of phones from today’s big brands, no matter which angle you look at it from.
Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: The Ideal Midranger, Almost
The front of this phone is almost all screen, with a small camera notch at the top (Samsung calls this design “Infinity-U”). The screen has rounded corners and a fairly thick bezel, while the sides and top edges are slimmer. The edges are very slightly curved, and we’re curious to note that it’s one of the few phones we’ve reviewed recently that doesn’t already have a plastic screen protector attached, which we don’t mind and even appreciate.
The back has the only touch of personality that Samsung has decided to showcase – an off-center geometric pattern of intersecting lines with different shades of color on each segment. There are three options: Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet – our review unit is the black version, but the colors on the back are different shades of grey.
Thankfully, this design isn’t as prone to picking up smudges and fingerprints as the mirror-like finish on the Galaxy A50, but you’ll need to wipe it down a few times a day to keep it looking its best. There’s still a very slight prismatic effect under some types of light, but it’s much more subtle than the psychedelic reflections we saw on this phone’s predecessor.
At the bottom is a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack and a single speaker. The left side compartment has slots for two Nano-SIM and microSD cards. The power and volume buttons are all on the right, and the top is empty.
Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: A Brilliant Mid Ranger At A Great Price
Weighing 166 grams and only 7.7 mm thick, the Galaxy A50s are surprisingly easy to handle and live with. You may have to stretch a bit to reach the top of the 6.4-inch display, but otherwise we had no complaints. The build quality is pretty good too, although this phone still feels plasticky and not very premium. There is also no information on what kind of glass is used for the display.
We didn’t notice any scratches or dents on the frame or back panel during our review, but we would use this phone with a plastic case. Thankfully, one is included in the box. Samsung also provides a 10W charger, a USB Type-C cable, a 3.5mm wired headset, a SIM removal tool, and a quick start guide.
The first thing you’ll notice when you turn on this phone is the sharp, bright Super AMOLED display. It measures 6.4 inches, but if you measure with rounded corners, it’s trimmed down to about 6.2 inches. The resolution is full HD+ at 1080×2340. There is a notch at the top for the front camera and a conveniently placed integrated fingerprint sensor.
Samsung used its own octa-core Exynos 9611 processor, which appears to be a minor upgrade to the Exynos 9610 found in the Galaxy A50. You get four 1.74GHz ARM Cortex-A53 cores and four 2.3GHz Cortex-A73 cores, plus Mali-G72 graphics. This chip has the same CPU, GPU and LTE capabilities as its predecessor, but supports higher camera resolutions.
Samsung Galaxy A50s Review: Shines Like A Prism
This brings us to the main new feature of this phone, its 48-megapixel f/2 primary rear camera. It is paired with an 8-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera has also been upgraded with a 32-megapixel resolution and f/2 aperture.
There are two variants of this phone, but both have 128GB of storage. The only difference is that you get either 4GB for Rs. 22,999 or 6GB RAM for Rs. 24,999. It’s similar to how Samsung offers the Galaxy A50, and we think it’s completely unnecessary to have two variants that are so similar. Unless you run very heavy programs and games, you won’t notice much of a difference.
The battery is pretty big at 4000mAh and 15W fast charging is possible even if you get a 10W charger in the box. Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC and FM radio are all available.
Our device comes with Samsung One UI firmware version 1.5 running on top of Android 9 with August 2019 security update. We’re not fans of the app, despite its interface designed primarily for large-screen phones and looking clean and modern. oversized icons and ample space everywhere. Fortunately, you can adjust the size and density of the home screens and app drawer through their settings.
Galaxy A50s Is Samsung’s Latest Phone To Get February 2022 Security Update
There’s a lot of wasted space in the menus and everything feels like the big screen isn’t being used optimally, especially in the notification screen and Settings app, which require a lot of swiping. However, it’s nice to be able to pull down the menus and controls so that the top rows are accessible as well. Many features are hidden, including a clone of the Dual Messenger app with a secure folder, Samsung Pay, kids space, night mode, floating apps and independent contact lists.
A long press on the power button on the right side invokes Bixby’s voice assistant. To turn off your phone, there’s a small power button on the screen in the quick links area, which you find by swiping down from the top of the screen. To the left of the initial home screen is the Bixby home screen, which has some useful panels like sports scores and reminders, as well as lots of promotional content.
Bixby routines let you combine multiple commands with simple “if…then” conditions. For example, you can tell the Galaxy A50s to change Wi-Fi and Bluetooth status, sound profile, screen customizations, lock screen shortcuts and accessibility settings, and even perform specific actions like opening a website or sending an SMS. All of these can be activated at once when you leave or enter a location, plug in an accessory, open a specific app, receive a phone call, and/or pair with a specific Bluetooth device.
The Super AMOLED panel allows for an ambient display, although by default the phone requires a single press when in standby mode to see the time and status icons. You can set it to stay visible all the time or only at specified times.
Samsung Galaxy A50 Update Brings Bixby Routines, New Camera Features
You also have a lot of control over what content appears on the lock screen, plus choosing animated backgrounds or a collection of images to cycle through. Lock screen stories are pieces of content that are part of an ad that appears every time you wake your phone from sleep mode. This can be disabled during the initial Android installation process.
Samsung also decided to implement the Edge Panels feature that we previously only saw on high-end phones with curved glass sides. This slim-looking tab can be placed on either side of the screen, and you slide over it to bring up one or more vertical strips with shortcuts to contacts or apps, or thumbnail tools or content feeds. More edge panels can be downloaded via Samsung’s Galaxy Store.
There are only a few pre-installed apps: Facebook, Netflix, OneDrive and Samsung’s Galaxy Store and Game Launcher. When we set up this phone, we were told that if it’s not used for three days or more, the apps will “sleep”, meaning they won’t update content and you won’t get any notifications. This can be turned off in the battery settings, but again, it’s worth noting that the default setting is unusual and can cause some unexpected notification delays.
