Update Samsung A50 Folder Original Price Review – We started this year with Samsung’s affordable Galaxy M and A series smartphones, part of a strategy to take on Xiaomi, Realme and others on their own terms. Samsung has considered almost all strategic price points from Rs. 8000 and Rs. 20,000 in a very short period of time and sometimes there are many options due to the large number of models and versions. It’s been a while since that quick launch, and Samsung’s competitors have all been updated, so we’re sure to see some refreshed models from the Korean giant.
The all-new Samsung Galaxy A50s is priced at Rs. 22,999, which is slightly more expensive compared to the Galaxy A50 (Review). It joined the party shortly after the launch of the flagship Redmi K20 (Review) and several other flagships have dropped prices and entered the segment. Which of these phones should you go for with a budget of around Rs. 25,000? Let’s take a look at the Samsung Galaxy A50 to find out.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 is nothing new in terms of look and feel. When we looked at the Galaxy M20 ( review ), one of Samsung’s first aggressive pushes, we commented on how generic it felt and how it differed from the company’s previous models. The Galaxy A50s can also be mistaken for any of today’s big brand phones, no matter what angle you look at it from.

The front of this phone is almost entirely screen, with a small notch at the top for the camera (Samsung calls this model “Infinity-U”). The corners of the screen are rounded, with a rather thick chin, the sides and top bezels are narrower. The edges are slightly curved, and it’s curious that this is one of the few phones we’ve reviewed recently that doesn’t have a plastic screen protector, which we don’t mind or even appreciate.
On the back, there’s one feature that Samsung chose to highlight – an off-center geometric pattern of intersecting lines with a different color in each segment. There are three options: Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet. Our monitor is the black version but has different shades of gray on the back.
Fortunately, this design isn’t as smudge- and fingerprint-resistant as the Galaxy A50’s mirror, but it still needs a few cleans a day to keep it looking its best. There’s still a very slight prismatic effect in certain types of light, but it’s much more subtle than the ghost reflections we’ve seen on previous models of this phone.
At the bottom is a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack and one speaker. The left base has two Nano-SIM and microSD card slots. The power and volume buttons are all on the right, and the top is empty.

Weighing 166g and just 7.7mm thick, the Galaxy A50s is incredibly easy to handle and live with. You may have to stretch a bit to reach the top of the 6.4-inch screen, but otherwise we have no complaints. The build quality is very good, but the phone feels plastic and not very high quality. There was also no mention of what kind of glass was used for the display.
We didn’t see any scratches or dents on the frame or back panel during the review period, but we did use the phone with its plastic body. Luckily, one is included in the retail box. Samsung also supplies a 10W charger, a USB Type-C cable, a 3.5mm wired headset, a SIM eject tool and a quick guide.
The first thing you notice when you turn on this phone is the crisp and clear Super AMOLED display. It’s 6.4 inches long, but with the rounded corners it’s about 6.2 inches. The resolution is Full-HD+ with a resolution of 1080×2340. At the top there is a notch for the front camera and a fingerprint sensor conveniently placed.
Samsung used its octa-core Exynos 9611 processor, which appears to be a slight upgrade over the Exynos 9610 found in the Galaxy A50. You get four 1.74GHz ARM Cortex-A53 cores, four 2.3GHz Cortex-A73 cores, plus Mali-G72 graphics. This chip has the same CPU, GPU and LTE capabilities as its predecessor, but supports higher camera resolutions.

Which brings us to the phone’s one big new feature, the 48-megapixel f/2 primary rear camera. It includes an 8-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera is also improved with 32-megapixel resolution and f/2 aperture.
There are two variants of this phone, but both have 128GB of storage. The only difference is that you get one for 4GB for Rs. 22,999 or 6GB RAM for Rs. 24,999. This is similar to what the Samsung Galaxy A50 is offering, and we don’t think there’s any need for two very similar options. Unless you use a lot of heavy apps or games, you probably won’t notice much of a difference.
The battery is quite large at 4000 mAh, and although there is a 10W charger in the box, it is capable of 15W fast charging. Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC and FM radio are available.
Our device received Samsung One UI firmware version 1.5 running Android 9 with the August 2019 security update. One UI is mainly designed for large-screen phones, and while it looks crisp and modern, we don’t like the big icons and wide spaces everywhere. Fortunately, the size and resolution of the home screen and app drawer can be adjusted in the settings.

There’s a lot of white space in the menus, which doesn’t feel like an optimal use of the large screen, especially in the notification area and the settings app, which require a lot of scrolling. The ability to pull down menus and controls means that even the topmost rows are clickable. There are also many features like Secure Folder, Samsung Pay, Kids Space, Night Mode, Floating Apps, Dual Messenger app cloning with independent contact list.
Now press and hold the power button to launch the Bixby voice assistant. Swipe down from the top of the screen to turn off the phone, and the quick switch has a small power button on the screen. To the left of the first home screen is the Bixby home screen, which contains useful panels such as sports scores and reminders, as well as lots of promotional content.
Bixby mode allows you to chain multiple commands with a simple “if … then” condition. For example, you can tell the Galaxy A50s to change Wi-Fi and Bluetooth status, sound profiles, display settings, lock screen shortcuts and access settings, as well as perform certain actions such as opening websites and sending SMS. All of these can be activated at the same time when you leave or log in to a location, plug in an accessory, open a specific app, receive a phone call, and/or connect to a specific Bluetooth device.
The Super AMOLED panel allows you to use the surround display, but by default you can see the clock and status icons with a single tap when the phone is in standby mode. You can set it to show always or only at specified times.

You have a lot of control over what content appears on the lock screen, and you can also choose from animated wallpapers or rotating images. Lock screen stories are pieces of content that appear every time you wake your phone from sleep mode. Some of them are advertisements. This can be disabled during the initial setup of Android.
Samsung has also decided to implement its Edge Panels feature, previously only seen on premium phones with curved glass. This slim-looking tab can be placed on either side of the screen, and you can swipe in to reveal one or more vertical bars containing contacts or app shortcuts, widgets, or content streams. More bezels can be downloaded from the Samsung Galaxy Store.
There are only preloaded apps like Facebook, Netflix, OneDrive, Samsung Galaxy Store and Game Launcher. While setting up this phone, we’ve been told that apps go to sleep after three or more days of inactivity, so they won’t update content and you might not get notifications. This can be disabled in the battery settings, but it’s worth noting that the default setting is unusual and can cause unexpected notification delays.
