Recently, Samsung has produced less than ideal devices at unusually high prices. Case in point is the Galaxy J8 ( review ), which for the life of me couldn’t figure out why it was priced at Rs 19,000.

But after missing so much, things may be looking up for Samsung. Because the recently launched Galaxy A50 seems to be a step in the right direction.

At Rs 19,990, the phone offers two pretty remarkable things, a good camera, a great display. You can also add design to that list, which is pretty subjective, but given the smaller notch and slimmer profile, I’d go with the Samsung over the Poco. If these are the two qualities you want in a smartphone (three if you add design), then Samsung has given you the perfect smartphone. If performance is what you’re looking for, you’ll be fine with the Poco F1 (Review). Let us tell you more about the device.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and declare the A50 as one of the best displays under Rs 20,000 I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing. The color accuracy on the screen is better than Poco F1. That’s to be expected from Samsung, given that they make near-flawless OLED panels and the 6.4-inch AMOLED display on the A50 is one of the best you can get.
A look at the photos clicked on both the photos showed the Poco F1 showing a brownish tint to the bright red images and a slight yellowish tint to the white background, which was not the case with the A50. The phone has several display modes such as adaptive display, AMOLED cinema, AMOLED photo and Basic. I recommend adaptive display mode as it provides more realistic colors. I will say that I did notice a very slight blue tint to the screen, but it was nothing to worry about.
The brightness of the phone was really remarkable. I could read everything clearly on my phone even in bright sunlight. At night, the screen managed to dim a bit, although it can get very dim at some points, so I recommend keeping the brightness at around 25 percent when reading at night. Samsung has also introduced a blue light filter to make night reading easier.

From the top notch or as Samsung calls it Infinity U display, I think Samsung is good at mastering this notch as it provides a better viewing experience. This is the first smartphone I have reviewed from Samsung and I think the company has done a great job. You can hide the notches if you want.
Another thing that should attract people to this device is that it has a triple camera system. This is not something that can be found in a phone under Rs 20,000. The most interesting thing about the camera is the inclusion of a wide-angle lens, which I wanted to try.
The Galaxy A50’s triple camera setup includes a 25MP low-light shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 5MP depth sensor. The ultra-wide lens on the phone offers a 123-degree field of view that compresses more from the same point to the frame. While the ultra-wide sensor is great, the image is distorted at the edges, giving the final image a spherical bend on the sides. However, it’s amazing how much larger the field of view the ultra-wide sensor brings out than the regular sensor.
The primary 25-megapixel lens was billed as a low-light sensor, and I have to say, for the most part, I wasn’t disappointed. There’s no dedicated night mode in the phone’s camera options, but Scene Optimizer recognizes low-light conditions and adjusts accordingly. The camera also had good noise reduction, which is not something I can say about the Poco F1. However, there were times when the camera didn’t recognize low-light scenes and produced a dull image that lacked exposure and detail. Additionally, the Poco F1 had more detail and better exposure calibration than the Galaxy A50.

In addition to low-light performance, the phone captures highly colorful images in bright scenes and also exhibits a wide dynamic range. The Poco F1 doesn’t shoot the most color-accurate photos and doesn’t have the most dynamic range, but it does get more detail in the image. For most people, this is a no-brainer as vivid and colorful photos are all the rage. The third lens is the depth sensor used for live bokeh shots.
Bokeh or Live Focus also works well, background separation works better. The front camera also has a 25MP sensor that takes good pictures, but even with beauty mode turned off, the Samsung’s facial sharpness is quite noticeable.
In terms of video, the phone captures good and stable videos, which can be attributed to the EIS on the device. Other than that, videos look good at night, but the secondary ultra-wide sensor performs really poorly. The phone can also record slow motion videos at 720p @480fps.
OneUI is something I’ve been interested in since I received the A50 for review, and I have to say I’m impressed with what Samsung has done. I only experienced the hideous TouchWiz or its rebranded version called Experience UI, which in my humble opinion was a bundle of useless features and bloatware combined to summon the Android experience. With OneUI running on Android 9.0 Pie, Samsung has done things a little differently and tried to keep the experience more like Android.

The dropdown menu is now quite accessible. Pulling down the notification tray covers the entire screen with icons, making them easy to access with just your thumb. In general, all icons are now large (can be minimized) and menus have less narrow information than before. In addition, the app is highly customizable with different themes and skins. Samsung seems to have kept in mind users with small hands who are tired of using the search option to find key settings when designing OneUI.
There is still the problem of bloatware, such as duplicate apps for the gallery, browser and also the Galaxy Store, which take up space on the home screen and cannot be removed, but do not slow down the user interface. The digital health feature was a nice addition, but telling you how many times you’ve unlocked your phone is about the only benefit I can get from it. I hope Samsung builds on this UI to improve it further and give fans a proper Android experience.
The Galaxy A50 is a solid phone and looks stylish at the same time. While the Oppo F11 Pro certainly doesn’t have the triple gradient back ( review ), it does have a fire-resistant polycarbonate back. I bought the blue color variant which looks really attractive. The bottom of the phone has a Type-C charging port along with a single speaker unit and a headphone jack. The left side of the phone is flat except for the hybrid dual SIM card slot. On the right are the volume rockers and the power switch. There is no physical fingerprint scanner on the device as Samsung has decided to adopt an in-display fingerprint sensor.

On the front, we have the Infinity U display, which is just a fancy way of saying notched display, and it has a big chin like the one on the Poco F1. The device has a sleek sleek look and feels balanced and thin enough to hold, making it better than the Poco in terms of design.
