Despite what Samsung would have you believe, the Galaxy Series does not begin and end with the S and Note lines. Samsung flagships may get all the attention, but you wouldn’t be the biggest smartphone maker in the world by ignoring those who don’t have the best parts in the latest phones.

That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it shines. At first glance, it looks like the Galaxy S10, but internally it offers a very fast experience without exaggerating the graphics performance. It’s an absolute steal at £310 and worth considering if the S and Note are too expensive for you.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: A Stellar Refresh With One Major Letdown

The Galaxy A series is very complicated. What you really need to know is that the Galaxy A50 is the second best behind the A70. It will soon be the third when the A80 is released this month. This makes it better overall than the A10, A20e and A40.

Essentially, this means that the 6.4-inch device is identical to the Samsung Galaxy S10, but with a chopped inside. The Exynos 9610 2.3GHz octa-core processor that powers the phone is the same Snapdragon 675 that powers the Galaxy A70. The phone is also supported by 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

Surprisingly for the price, the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with three cameras on the back, with a depth camera and a wide-angle lens with a large 25-megapixel snapper. The A50 also comes with Samsung’s usual Super AMOLED screen, which is impressive when competitors in this bracket often offer cheaper IPS displays. This goes double when there’s an in-display fingerprint reader.

So what’s the harm? Well, a very reasonable £310 don’t you know. That’s a bit cheaper than many of Samsung’s other phone offerings, as its closest competitors come from other manufacturers.

Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: A Brilliant Mid Ranger At A Great Price

First, here’s our favorite mid-ranger, the Google Pixel 3a. A stripped-down version of Google’s flagship, this version is slightly slower, less impressive in build, and has a few more features, starting at £399, but now retails for around £350. As such, the P30 Lite is a slimmed-down version of the Huawei P30 series and retails for £329.

Otherwise, there is the mid-ranger of interest, the Xiaomi Pocophone F1. This is a phone that costs just £329 despite having Qualcomm’s fastest mobile processor of 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which started at £380 but has recently become much cheaper.

It’s a very strong competition, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 is off to a good start with a design that owes a lot to the Galaxy S10. That means there’s almost no bezel to speak of, although this version does see a return to the front-facing camera. But, here, there is more of a notchlet – a small knob on the top of the phone.

Like the S10, there’s a small chin on the bottom of the phone, but it’s barely noticeable since there’s no bezel to speak of on the sides. The back is slightly curved and it’s plastic instead of glass, which should make it more durable. This is the type of phone you want to protect against certain types, mind.

Most interestingly for a phone at this price point, the fingerprint reader is built into the screen, meaning it doesn’t appear on the phone at all. Just slide your finger down the screen and the phone unlocks – maybe a hair slower than usual, but still a nice feature at this price.

In terms of other features, as usual Samsung is very good. Expandable storage? Note: microSD cards up to 512 GB are supported. A headphone jack? Shown and correct. Dual SIM? Yes, sir. The two downsides I see are that it’s not waterproof and doesn’t support wireless charging, but you can’t have everything at this price.

If there’s one thing Samsung is known for in its phones, it’s the quality of its displays. And this Super AMOLED screen does not disappoint – this time you are looking at a 6.4-inch panel with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080.

The screen displays 100% of the sRGB spectrum and in the basic color mode of the screen it can offer very accurate colors. The other modes – Image, Cinema and Adaptation – are a bit more dynamic, but you can’t say you’re not given a choice.

Being an AMOLED, the contrast is perfect and the brightness is not too bad and in automatic mode it reaches a maximum brightness of 560cd / m2 (although it is about 350cd / m2 (if you set it to maximum brightness, don’t do it, probably) .for battery reasons.)

In short, it’s about as good a screen as you could hope for for the price—better, in fact, than adding an in-screen fingerprint reader.

Before I answer this question, let me quickly recap. The Samsung Galaxy A50 uses a 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor, along with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In everyday use it feels very smooth, locks quickly and switches between apps with ease. But what about indicators?

With one exception, everything is plentiful. The Samsung Galaxy A50 is more expensive than anything else (including the £60 more expensive Galaxy A70) but it doesn’t have enough edge to lighten things up.

With this exception: the £329 Xiaomi Pocophone F1 wipes the floor with everything in this bracket. Unsurprisingly, it uses the same chip as last year’s Samsung Galaxy S9 in the US, but it’s clear what you’ll need to do if you want to increase the range.

It’s a similar story when it comes to graphics, although the Galaxy A50 is priced slightly worse, coming in behind the Pixel 3a and Nokia 8.1. Of course, the Pocophone F1 is the clear winner.

But the Samsung Galaxy A50 has one big ace, and that’s the battery life. Our video wasn’t long enough to cover them all, so it started a second time at 21 hours and 21 minutes before the 4,000 mAh cell died. It was beaten only by the 500 mAh extra Galaxy A70, which lasted 25 hours and 22 minutes.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 brings us not one, not two, but three rear cameras. A 25-megapixel, f/1.7 primary camera is supported by an eight-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a five-megapixel, f/2.2 camera. The telephoto lens is good for one of them, but I’d probably take the moon on a stick given the generous specs we’re getting for the price.

That makes it a match for the £329 Huawei P30 Lite’s triple camera array (48-megapixel, f/1.8 with eight-megapixel camera and two-megapixel depth sensor). And while the Samsung Galaxy A50’s image is much better, once you get inside, it’s clear that the Huawei P30 Lite has the upper hand.

This is not to say that the Galaxy A50 is bad by any means. And given the uncertain future of Huawei’s Android, you might think it’s worth a little loss of confidence.

For indoor shots, the cameras are more consistent, each delivering images full of detail, accurate colors, and low noise. Good job, both, although Huawei once again has the upper hand.

For video, the Galaxy A50 can record in Full HD at 30 frames per second. If you want 4K or 60fps (not at the same time, mind you), you’ll need to drop an extra £60 on the Galaxy A70. That said, video quality is good and image stabilization seems adequate for shaky hands.

The front-facing selfie camera also deserves a little shout-out. It is a 25-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture. It might be too much for Skype calls and selfies, and even if the beauty mode is dead, Samsung still insists on smoothing all the edges, giving you a strange, alien glow in the Samsung camera app.

This may be an advantage for some, but Instagram abusers of mobile beauty models be warned: you’re not fooling anyone.

But if that’s all you can say is wrong with the Galaxy A50, Samsung is doing something right. Very true, indeed.

For £310 you get a great phone that looks great, has a big screen, is fast enough for most people and takes good photos too. This is a phone that will be enough for most people.

If you want more speed, the Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is worth looking at for £20 more, and if you want a cleaner version of Android, it might be worth the splurge.
