The success of the Samsung A series can be attributed to the combination of a technical comprehensive package with an affordable price. In this particular case, technical integrity means that the mobile phone has a 6.4-inch Full HD screen (1,080 x 2,340 pixels, Super AMOLED) with a good screen-to-body ratio. The Galaxy A50 doesn’t offer IP certification, but it’s powered by a mid-range Exynos 9610 chipset, equipped with eight cores and clocked at up to 2.3GHz. The processor is supported by 4 GB of RAM and the main memory is 128 GB.

There’s also a 4,000 mAh battery, which is a lot by today’s standards. The fingerprint sensor is built into the screen and support for all common transmission formats is guaranteed, except for the new and not yet widespread 5G and Wi-Fi 6 (ax) standards. Last but not least, it is a triple main camera, the units have a resolution of 25 megapixels, 5 megapixels and 8 megapixels (aperture: f/1.7, f/2.2 and f/2.2). Samsung has a 25-megapixel front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture for selfie enthusiasts. The bottom line is that the Samsung Galaxy A50 offers everything that even the most demanding heart could desire. But it also applies to the current successor model, the Galaxy A52s 5G. And here the technology is much better.

The two smartphones of the 50s are basically the same. Both are similar in size, both offer the same quality and both have the same memory devices (at least with a cheaper margin). But then there’s the Galaxy A52s processor, which has been upgraded to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G. The new model with 6 GB is also much better in terms of RAM and connectivity, the Galaxy A52S can even shine at the 5G transmission level. Then there’s the 4,500 mAh battery capacity compared to the Samsung Galaxy A50’s 4,000 mAh and 64-megapixel primary camera.
Now for the software: The Samsung Galaxy A50 was running on Google’s current Android 9 Pie operating system when it was launched. Since then, the device has been updated first to Android 10 and later to Android 11. However, another version update will not follow. And the situation around security updates is also a bit tricky. That’s because Samsung has given many smartphones, including the Galaxy A50, four years of security updates. However, apart from the Enterprise edition, the device has already been removed from Samsung’s update list. The new Samsung Galaxy A52s, on the other hand, debuts with Android 11. The key to the success of the Samsung A series is value for money. That’s why the Galaxy A50 only cost around €350 when it launched. Since then, the device has undergone the usual Android price cut, but after several replacement models hit the market, the price has risen again – at the current price of 280 euros. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy A52s was originally priced under €450. Currently, the device can be purchased from well-known retailers for around 250 euros. This makes the device much better value for money.
If you can afford it and want to dig a little deeper into your pocket, it might also be worth picking up the new Samsung Galaxy A53 5G. For just over €325, buyers get a 5,000 mAh battery and a bit more power (Samsung Exynos 1280 chip).
The result is that the Galaxy A52s is not only newer but also more powerful. The price transfer ratio is also much better here. Buying a low and at the same time very expensive A50 model would be completely pointless. Unless you value aperture as wide as possible (f/1.7 vs f/1.8).

Despite what Samsung would have you believe, the Galaxy Series doesn’t begin and end with the S and Note lines. Samsung’s flagships might get all the attention, but they can’t be the biggest smartphone maker on the planet, ignoring those who don’t have the best things to throw at their latest handset.
That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it’s brilliant. At first glance, it looks like the Galaxy S10, but it offers a fast enough experience without adding performance. At £310 it’s an absolute steal, and worth considering if the S and Note ranges are too expensive for you.
The Galaxy A series is very, very confusing. What you really need to know is that the Galaxy A50 is currently the second best in the lineup after the A70. It will soon be the third when the A80 launches later this month. That makes it better than the A10, A20e and A40 by and large.

Literally, it’s a 6.4-inch device that looks like the Samsung Galaxy S10 but has a notch on the inside. The phone is powered by an octa-core 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor paired with a Snapdragon 675, putting the Galaxy A70 to shame. The phone is also supported by 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
Impressively, for the price, the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with a triple rear camera array, a depth sensor and an ultra-wide lens along with a primary 25-megapixel snapper. The A50 also comes with Samsung’s standard Super AMOLED display, which rivals in this price range often overwhelm with cheap IPS displays. It doubles as it includes an in-display fingerprint reader.
So what’s the harm? Well, quite a fair £310 you never know. It’s actually quite a bit cheaper than most of Samsung’s smartphone offerings, so its closest competitors come from other manufacturers.
First up is our favorite mid-ranger, the Google Pixel 3a. A stripped-down version of Google’s flagship, this version is slightly slower, less impressively built and drops some features coming in at £399, but is already on sale for £350. Similarly, the P30 Lite is a cut-down version of the Huawei P30 series and retails for £329.

Alternatively, it’s the flagship in mid-range guise, the Xiaomi Pocophone F1. It’s a handset that still runs just £329 despite having the fastest Qualcomm mobile processor of 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which starts at £380 but has been much cheaper recently.
It’s pretty competitive, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 is off to a good start with looks that owe a lot to the Galaxy S10. This means there’s no bezel to speak of, although this version does see a step back for the front-facing camera. But here it is a little indent above the phone – above the phone.
Like the S10, there’s a very small chin on the bottom of the phone, but it’s only noticeable because the other sides have almost no bezel to speak of. The back is slightly curved and it’s made of plastic rather than glass, which makes it a little more durable. However, in any case, that’s the kind of hive you want to protect mentally.
Most notably for a handset at this price, the fingerprint reader is built into the display, meaning it’s not visible on the handset itself. Swipe your thumb across the bottom of the screen and the phone unlocks – maybe a hair slower than usual, but still a great feature at this price.
