5G has become popular recently, so it’s no surprise to see 5G support in less expensive phones. Samsung’s midrange A models now include 5G, and the cheapest – the Galaxy A32 5G – allows you to enjoy faster networking speeds for $ 280. It’s a great deal, even with some serious drawbacks.
As you’d expect for $280, there’s nothing high-end about the Galaxy A32. The 720p display isn’t great, performance is average at best, and it’s a fairly large device that may be difficult for some people to manage. However, the Galaxy A32 5G offers incredibly impressive battery numbers, a 90Hz refresh rate on the TFT LCD panel, and three years of Samsung’s platform updates and four years of security patches.
Buyers will see similarities between the Galaxy A32 and the OnePlus Nord N200 5G, which I called the cheapest 5G phone when I reviewed it a month ago. For $40 less than the A32, the Nord N200 does a lot of things right, sporting significantly better performance and similar performance. However, Samsung wins in the camera department, as you’ll see below. And with so much support, the A32 is a safe bet for the long term, making it one of the best cheap phones you can buy.

Samsung Galaxy A32 Could Be Arriving In 4g And 5g Versions
The Galaxy A32 5G has the advantage of being available basically anywhere. Samsung has the full weight behind it, and you can buy it through various wireless carriers, as well as Samsung itself and Best Buy. It’ll run you $279.99 outright for 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM, though you can get a better deal with a trade-in and/or same-day activation.
The A32 doesn’t support mmWave 5G, but it does come with C-Band support (which is important for some AT&T and Verizon’s future 5G expansion plans). The lack of mmWave on the Galaxy A32 5G is not surprising – it is a premium feature that is seen as a luxury these days.
At first glance, the Galaxy A32 5G looks pretty good. Three vertical camera lenses, along with a macro camera and flash, make up the micro camera module on the back of the phone. With a glossy plastic body, the A32 really attracts fingerprints, requiring frequent cleaning to keep it looking sharp.
The display takes up most of the front of the Galaxy A32. However, the large bottom and top bezels spoil the illusion that this is an edge-to-edge screen. The front camera is placed above the teardrop notch, not the hole-punch cutout seen on other phones like the Nord N200 5G.

The A32 also has a fingerprint sensor on the power button, which worked well in my testing. I sometimes had trouble getting my left thumb in proper position, but the phone recognized my right thumb most of the time.
At $280, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Galaxy A32 5G feels cheap. Buttons sound hollow and loud. You get a headphone jack, something you don’t find on most expensive flagships.
We don’t see many phones with TFT LCD anymore, but the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G came with this option to keep costs down. It’s definitely a far cry from the company’s Super AMOLED panels and at 720p, the screen’s sharpness won’t knock your socks off. It’s a mediocre 6.5-inch display that struggles with crushed blacks, so much brightness and washed-out colors.
Watching videos on the Galaxy A32 is not the best experience, while the OnePlus Nord N200 5G has a better display that does a much better job with colors, viewing angles and deep blacks. Putting both phones side by side shows the difference between the TFT and IPS LCD panels. (The Last Nord features the latter.)
Galaxy A32 Becomes Samsung’s First Mid Range Phone With 90hz Display
The displays on both phones can go up to 90Hz, which is really nice to see for devices that cost less than $300. That higher frame rate means scrolling will be smoother. Games that support higher refresh rates will theoretically also look better if the Galaxy A32 can get the power required for such a task.
I saw my favorite scene in the later parts of Blade Runner 2049 with its extreme orange color palette. On most phones, the scene looks rich and its strangeness and mystery attract you. On the Galaxy A32 5G, it was washed out and soft.
Looking at the performance lab results shows the differences between the A32 and the Nord N200. The A32 produced 96.1% of the sRGB and only 68.1% of the DCI-P3 gamut. The Nord N200 managed 160.7% of the sRGB spectrum and 113.8% of DCI-P3. The A32’s Delta-E score, where 0 is perfect, is also very high at 0.35. Compare this to the Nord N200, with its 0.25 delta-E score.
As for brightness, the Galaxy A32 maxed out at 485 nits in our test (with the Nord N200 a low of 415 nits). It’s surprising to see such a mediocre display from Samsung, especially since OnePlus offers a large screen for a $40 phone.

The Galaxy A32 5G has four cameras: a 48 MP main camera, an 8 MP ultrawide shooter, a 5 MP macro lens and a 2 MP depth sensor. As you might expect, only the main and ultrawide cameras are worthwhile – the last two don’t seem to add anything.
Overall, the A32 is admirable for a phone under $300. It’s definitely better than the OnePlus Nord N200 5G, which I used for the following camera comparisons. Samsung likes to oversaturate on its more expensive phones, but that tendency isn’t evident in the A32’s photos. This could be because the processor doesn’t have the horsepower to do all the post-processing that high-end Galaxy phones do.
Starting from the outside, the Galaxy A32 5G captured a well-balanced image of the flowers. Colors are richer, exposure is better considering how sunny the scene was, and the image feels more alive overall. This is especially true when you look at the image of the Nord N200, which is flat, bland, boring and generally lifeless. This is a terrible picture.
For this second outdoor shot, the Galaxy A32 didn’t fare as well as before, but still outperformed the Nord N200. The scene included direct sunlight, and both phones struggled. Even so, the A32 did a good job of underexposure and still showed flower colors. The Nord N200 can’t account for the sun or the flowers, producing a blown image that I wouldn’t dare post anywhere but here.

Inside, the Galaxy A32 again beats the Nord N200. Merida’s image is vibrant with her red hair, blue dress and small details in it. The Nord N200’s picture is flat and dull, with washed-out colors and poor detail capture. Both phones struggled with soft focus, with the final images looking blurry in some places. I wouldn’t call either shot better, but the A32 clearly wins this one.
Where the Galaxy A32 5G had problems was with images. Not only did it struggle with light coming from the right side of the image, it also struggled with color accuracy. The blur radius, however, is quite artificial, so I’m left to wonder if the problem here was simply the A32’s inability to handle poor lighting conditions. Compare the image to a portrait shot from the Nord N200 which, when zoomed with a faint bokeh effect, looks more color accurate with stronger focus to me.
Samsung includes a night mode on the Galaxy A32 5G, and it’s not bad. Unfortunately, it’s not that good either, far from the likes of Google’s Night Sight on the Pixel 4a. However, it’s not as bad as the Nord N200’s night shot. Compared to the OnePlus phone, the Galaxy A32 produced a much brighter image of the smoker. Details remain scarce, but at least you can see the rough stuff. Nord N200 shows zero blackness.
Finally, the Galaxy A32 5G has a 13MP front-facing camera. It’s not surprising, but it produced much better selfies than the Nord N200. The A32’s image is crisper with rich details, showing my face and beard and the blue of my eyes very well.
