Samsung introduced its Galaxy A12 as the successor to the Galaxy A11 in November 2020 before bringing it to the US in April 2021. It was succeeded by the Galaxy A13 series.
The Galaxy A12 offers a total of six different configurations, starting with a minimum of 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. However, only three are currently available in the US (listed above). Regardless of your approach, you will also have access to four color options: red, blue, black and white.
Our Samsung Galaxy A12 arrived with Android 10, although an update to Android 11 and Samsung’s One UI 3.1 is available via OTA. It also ran the Android security patch July 1, 2021 during testing. It will receive two years of software updates and a total of four years of security patches, which will bring the Galaxy A12 from the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. Our device has not received Android 12 yet, but it will be on the way soon.
Once you get past the software, you’ll see that the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC falls short of Samsung’s entry-level device. RAM and storage options are up to 6GB and 128GB respectively, and you can go further with a microSD slot. Combined with a 5,000mAh battery and a 6.5-inch HD+ panel, the display comes with an Infinity-V notch. In India, there are variants that replace the Helio P35 with the Samsung Exynos 850 chipset.

Samsung has removed its headphones from the box this time, although it still provides a charging pad and a USB-C cable. You’ll also get a SIM eject tool and a quick start guide, if you need help getting stuck in. Samsung’s Galaxy A12 is also available on Verizon, UScellular, and AT&T.
The budget phone seems to have almost added a glass back and a fingerprint finish to give a nice breeze. Thankfully, Samsung’s Galaxy A12 bucks the trend, opting for a soft matte finish instead. I also appreciate the raised diagonal slopes, as they add a bit of grip to the overall design.
The large 6.5-inch screen means a good grip is important if you’re hoping to print a case. Although the screen sticks to HD+ resolution, it’s still big enough and clear enough to catch your latest show. We’ll always praise the headphone jack, headphones are the best way to enjoy sound on the Galaxy A12 as opposed to the mono speakers that come down.
Samsung has decided to leave the fingerprint reader on the back of the Galaxy A11 in the past. Instead, the Galaxy A12 uses a side-mounted option, which is faster, easier to use, and cleans up the overall look of the device.

The side-mounted fingerprint reader and matte finish give the Galaxy A12 a premium look and feel.
Gracing the back is Samsung’s camera array with a large 48MP shooter, which performs well outdoors for a budget camera phone (check out this review for an overview). You can also switch to large cameras and ultra-wide cameras for more flexibility. The camera app is a breeze to navigate, though it can take a moment or two to find the big button as it’s hidden in the More tab.
Samsung’s One UI is one of the best Android skins on the market right now, and it’s just as good as it is on the Galaxy A12. In particular, the Samsung Free app is like Google’s Discover, but running. Instead of just providing news, Samsung Free brings Samsung TV Plus, Samsung Podcasts, Taboola News and Plays right into one place. Best of all, you won’t have to spend a dime on it all.
The Galaxy A12 is also a battery buff, at least when it comes to charging. I had no problem getting a good two days of use between gaming, answering emails, and browsing social media.

Samsung Free Apps can be a nice addition to the overall package, but Samsung doesn’t stop there when deciding how much to add to its Android version. Unfortunately, there are a lot of extras on the Galaxy A12 that often take up space. It comes with full Google apps and Samsung apps which leads to a lot of redundancy. There are even Microsoft options like Office, OneDrive, and Outlook. You’ll also find the Samsung Store, the Galaxy Store and the Galaxy Store – how many people really need two Samsung Stores and another Play Store?
The good news is that you can at least remove Microsoft’s, but that doesn’t do much to help the Galaxy A12 concept make a comeback. MediaTek’s Helio P35 doesn’t seem like a workhorse of the 6.5-inch screen, and jumping between apps slows things down further. The amount of RAM and storage doesn’t help, you might want to look at the 4GB RAM/64GB storage model if you can find it.

While Samsung has packed a solid front lens into the Galaxy A12, the choice of lens isn’t always the best. The large aperture camera offers only 2 megapixels, and it took a lot of effort to get a really clear preview image below. You won’t find a dedicated night mode on the Galaxy A12, so you’ll have to endure trial and error beyond the daylight hours.

While all phones add a bit of magic when you press the shutter button, the final results for photos taken with the Galaxy A12 are often better than what the camera app shows. For example, the bottom image below looks pretty dark when I press the shutter button, but none of the images in the comparison are as sharp as what you see. Most of the time, it turns out to be a beautiful surprise in the end, but it makes repeating your moves difficult. Graphics are also not good for face detection, as you can see in the swatch around my hair.
Samsung may have packed a powerful battery into its Galaxy A12, but 15W is running low, even for a phone as cheap as this one. I can go from 3% to 23% charge after 30 minutes, and full charge takes over two hours.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is a strong upgrade over the Galaxy A11 in almost every way. What this budget phone brings to the table is a decent 48MP camera, excellent battery life, and Samsung’s clean and elegant One UI software. Unfortunately, the side cameras lack punch and poor performance can be disappointing, but these are to be expected at this price point.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is an upgrade over the Galaxy A11 in almost every way and is perfect for a first-time smartphone buyer.

We mentioned that the Galaxy A12 is directly undercut by Motorola’s Moto G Power (2022) ($199), and while both are well-suited for the first-time smartphone buyer, the Galaxy is the safer choice. The lack of 5G hinders its future, but you can try the OnePlus Nord N20 ($282) or buy the new Samsung Galaxy A13 5G ($249) if you want maximum speed.
