If you get all your phone news from TV commercials – and luckily, as you read this, it doesn’t look like you do – you’d be forgiven for believing that Samsung’s smartphone range starts with the Galaxy Note 20 and ends with . with the Galaxy S21.

It’s not, of course, and there are plenty of cheaper options, including Samsung’s latest budget entry, the Galaxy A12. With a large 6.5in edge-to-edge display and a camera bump housing at least four lenses on the back, it certainly looks like a premium offering – so how can Samsung sell it for less than £200 each one?
Samsung Galaxy A12 Review; Hit And Miss
The Galaxy A12 is something of a departure from previous Samsung phones we’ve reviewed, thanks to the fact that it uses a MediaTek Helios MT6765 SoC. In the past, the company’s phones, from the most expensive to the cheapest, used either a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, or one of Samsung’s own Equinos chips.
Still, it’s decent enough on paper. It is an octa-core chipset with four cores clocked at 2.3 GHz and another four at 1.6 GHz. That’s backed up by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage on our model, although there are international variants with 3- or 6GB of RAM and 32- or 128GB of storage. While we’d normally argue that you want at least 4GB of RAM in 2021, storage isn’t an issue, as the Galaxy A12 supports microSD cards up to 1TB in size.
Interestingly, it also has at least four cameras on the back, arranged in a neat, square bump. The main camera is 48MP, number f/2.0, and is supported by a 5MPl, f/2.2 ultra-wide lens and two 2MP, f/2.4 snappers – one for depth detection and the other for close-up macro shots.
You get all that for a ridiculous £169, which isn’t bad at all – but before you get too excited, you should know that the sub-£200 price tag has become very crowded with some amazingly solid phones recently .

More recently, there’s the Moto G9 Power – a superb phone that, as the name indirectly suggests, has a massive 6000mAh battery, which delivered just under 27 hours of endurance on a single charge in our video review test . It retails for £180.

Then there’s the Nokia 5.3, which also has a quad camera, with surprisingly fast performance that defies the £150 price tag.

There are also some cheap Chinese phones. For starters, the all-new and feature-packed Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T retails for £229, while the Realme 7 can be had for £169. Even better, there’s the top-of-the-range Xiaomi Poco X3, which has a nasty habit of outshining all other budget offerings thanks to its unbeatable performance and 120Hz display for under £200 .
While there are some obvious signs that the Galaxy A12 is not Samsung’s flagship, it certainly looks premium at first glance. A 6.5-inch screen dominates the front of the phone with bezels just a few millimeters thick all around, doubling the size around the chin. The front-facing camera is built into a shallow notch at the top, which is a bit embarrassing, but no more than any other solution until the promised in-screen camera technology appears.
Flip it over and it’s clearly plastic in every way, although the plastic is the most convincing looking fake metal I’ve ever seen. There’s a two-tone approach on the back, where the bottom heel is a flat matte finish, but the top four fifths have a diagonal trimmed pattern that gives it a nice, slightly wavy look and feel.
The quad-camera bump in the top left corner looks fine, although it protrudes a bit from the earpiece, meaning the phone doesn’t rest perfectly on your back. The fingerprint scanner is built into the power button on the right, which is my favorite placement for it.

It’s also worth noting that the Galaxy A12 also has some consumer-friendly features that aren’t always found on premium phones. It supports microSD expansion up to 1TB unlike any iPhone and the recent Galaxy S21, and has a 3.5mm headphone jack. Of course, there’s no room for wireless charging or IP-certified waterproofing, but you can’t get everything at this price.
The Galaxy A12 comes with a 6.5-inch PLS display (Samsung’s standard IPS panel) with a resolution of 720 x 1,600, which gives you around 264 pixels per inch. And while it may be a little short of the Full HD experience you can get for the price, even with the large panel it looks perfectly sharp in everyday use.
Colorimeter analysis confirms that this is a solid, if unremarkable, plate. With 88% sRGB color gamut coverage against 95.7% gamut volume, its color accuracy is a bit off, and its peak brightness of 439cd/m2 isn’t exactly terrifying. However, with a contrast ratio of 1,740:1, everything is certainly sharp enough.
It’s far from a bad panel, and it’s roughly on par with the Moto G9 Power and Nokia 5.3. However, it falls short of the high standards set by the Poco X3 NFC.

If the mention of a MediaTek processor in the introduction left you with a sinking feeling in your stomach, then you are right to beware. While MediaTek chips have certainly improved over the years (both the G95 processor in the Realme 7 and the Dimensity 800U chips in the Redmi Note 9T are surprisingly powerful), the Helio P35 used here isn’t exactly a winner.
Out of the box, the phone feels sluggish with animations and apps taking seconds to open. True, it catches up after a period of use, but it is certainly not ideal for multitasking, despite the relatively generous 4GB of RAM it provides.
These impressions are confirmed by benchmarks. As you can see in the chart below, Geekbench 5 performs a little worse than all the rivals I highlighted at the beginning, but it is particularly bad compared to the three Chinese-branded phones – two of these uses a superior MediaTek chip.
This basic performance can be seen in the graphics tests with GFXBench, where the Samsung Galaxy A12 manages a measly 19 frames per second at the native resolution of 720p and only 12 frames per second when the output is in 1080p. With the Realme 7 and Poco X3 NFC managing almost four times the number of frames at that resolution, I think we can say it’s not good enough for the price. The Redmi Note 9T is sadly missing here as GFXBench refuses to run, but it would be surprising if it performed worse, given its Geekbench 5 score.
Samsung Galaxy A12 Review, Pros And Cons
It’s not all bad on the performance charts, though: one area where the hardware really shines is efficiency, with the 5,000mAh battery managing a whopping 25 hours and 58 minutes in our video battery loop test.
Credit where credit is due: this is exceptional. That’s less than an hour from the Moto G9 Power – a phone that not only has 1000mAh more to play with, but actually names how powerful the battery is. In other words, it’s unlikely you’ll get caught scot-free with the Samsung Galaxy A12.
The Galaxy A12 comes with Android 10 out of the box, although it’s a stripped-down version of Android over Samsung’s own One UI. Personally, I’m happy enough with One UI now, although this particular view causes a bit of trouble by trying to force you to install a bunch of ‘recommended apps’ including Candy Crush Saga in the first place you set it up.

I’ve been reviewing phones long enough to remember when Huawei putting three lenses on the P20 Pro was considered a bit excessive. Today, even budget devices are on the move. The Samsung Galaxy A12 has four cameras on the back, putting it in line with all the phones I’ve compared it to, except for the Moto G9 Power, which has “only” three.
Honestly, I don’t think I’m alone in preferring phones with just one really good camera like the Pixel 4a, rather than keeping up with the Joneses with barely used peripheral lenses. But regardless, the Samsung Galaxy A12 has four: a 48MP (f/2.0) main camera, supported by a 5MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide lens, and two 2MP (f/2.4) snappers for depth sensing and macro photography.
