The Samsung Galaxy A12 is a budget smartphone with a lot to say, from its great battery life to its imaginative and attractive design, but its day-to-day performance is so sluggish that all these good features come with major drawbacks.

On paper, it’s pretty enticing, but how does it really work? The Motorola Moto G8 sets the bar at this price point, and unfortunately the Galaxy A12 is less than the sum of its parts.
Of course, this is a matter of personal preference, but in our estimation, the Samsung Galaxy A12 is one of the best plastic phones you can buy.
The matte casing runs up the sides of the handset and a diagonal pattern of shallow ridges covers the upper back. The smooth section at the bottom does not detract from the look and creates an attractive two-tone look.
The four rear cameras are set in a square module that isn’t as conspicuous as similar setups on some other phones, but the hardware is just enough to keep the phone from lying completely flat on a table top.

A headphone jack and microSD card slot are nice to include, and there’s also a downward-facing mono speaker on the bottom edge.
The volume buttons and power button, which doubles as a fingerprint reader, are embedded on the right side of the phone, and they’re all easy to reach without adjusting your grip.
That’s impressive, since the Galaxy A12 has a hefty 6.5-inch PLS display, surrounded by a fairly thick bezel that houses the selfie camera in a teardrop-shaped notch.
With a resolution of 1600 x 720 and a pixel density of 270ppi, the screen is sharp enough for most people’s needs.

Viewing angles are also strong, with the only real stumbling block being brightness. On a sunny day, maximum output may be required.
The Galaxy A12’s quad-camera setup certainly looks the part. A 48-megapixel main lens, supported by a 5-megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 2-megapixel macro lens and a 2-megapixel depth sensor give the impression of a smartphone that takes photography seriously.
But let’s remember that this is a sub-£200 device. Anyone expecting results that would give the Google Pixel 6 a run for their money will be missing out, but temper your expectations and you’ll be happy, at least in the best lighting conditions. See a selection of images below:
It’s not as sharp in mid-light or low light, where images look almost flawless and blurry. There’s no night mode to save you, and the effective HDR can only do so much.

It’s surprising, given the other generous selection of shooting options available, including Portrait, Food, Macro and Pro modes.
Portrait mode is almost ubiquitous these days and allows you to adjust the depth of field to whatever degree you choose; Food Mode is like Portrait Mode for plates instead of faces; The macro mode is for close-ups, although the results leave a lot to be desired (see the snail above); and Pro Mode lets you dive deep into the camera’s settings and tinker as much as you want.
The Galaxy A12 also offers the ability to quickly switch between the regular camera and an ultra-wide camera, which can capture dramatic shots from seemingly completely different perspectives, but while these may look convincing on a phone screen, they don’t. they look real. . just as hot on a larger screen or after cropping or zooming.
Around the front of the phone is an 8-megapixel selfie camera, which also supports Portrait, Pro, Macro and Food modes. The first two we can understand, the second not so much.

So far, so good. Unfortunately, it’s in the performance department that Samsung has made the biggest compromises.
The Galaxy A12 is without a doubt the slowest smartphone I have ever used. Each interaction takes almost a second to register, making everything from opening an app to taking a picture, to writing a message, a frustrating and sometimes downright frustrating experience. Has it crashed? No need, it just takes time.
The Galaxy A12 is so slow that no matter how many times the delay stops everything, you can’t help but tap the screen again, having convinced yourself that you probably didn’t tap the screen correctly the first time . But more often than not, you did. I have never experienced this level of lag on a phone before.
Strangely enough, though, it’s able to run demanding games, like Asphalt 8, without much trouble, and there’s not even a hint when streaming.

The Galaxy A12 runs Android 11, but Samsung’s OneUI skin means it’s far from clean. Among the pre-installed, and in my case unwanted, apps are Samsung’s own browser, Galaxy Store, Samsung Global Goals and Facebook.
I was prompted to use the suite of pre-installed productivity-focused apps, such as OneDrive, Office and Outlook, which was laughable, considering how slow the A12 is.
Battery life is arguably the most impressive feature of the Galaxy A12; the phone can comfortably go three days without flirting with danger, even if you throw some streaming or gaming into the mix. Use it wisely and you may only need to charge it every other day.
In real-world use, an hour of Netflix streaming saw a 7% battery drain; half an hour of intense gaming (Asphalt 8) ate up 6%; and half an hour of easy fun (Three) took another 2%. That’s two hours of entertainment for 15% of battery life. Music barely made a dent, an hour of online streaming using up to 2% of the A12’s battery, while an hour of downloaded music added just 1% to the Galaxy A12’s battery.

But charging the Galaxy A12 again isn’t much fun. Using the charging kit included in the box, it took 1 hour and 35 minutes to get the phone from 0% to 50%, and a whopping 3 hours and 25 minutes to complete a full charge.
A good-looking cheap phone with a long-lasting battery: Samsung makes good-looking phones, even in this part of the market, and it helps that durability is great.
It’s hard to criticize a £169 smartphone that looks this good and goes this far between charges, but the Galaxy A12’s abysmal performance poisons the well. It is so sluggish that it is difficult to recommend to anyone.
The good news is that it’s possible to buy a solid all-rounder for the price without compromising on the user experience. The Motorola Moto G8 costs £179 and does everything the Galaxy A12 does well, but with none of the lag.
