The 5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera and 2MP depth sensor are carried over from the Galaxy A11 and there’s a new addition, although it won’t change much: a dedicated 2MP macro shooter.
The front camera has an 8MP f/2.2 selfie camera. It’s a little surprising to see Samsung move from a punch-hole to a notch design, but the screen is more important and we’ll be sure to explore it in detail in the review.
Another important innovation is the battery capacity. The Galaxy A12 has a 5,000mAh unit compared to 4,000mAh for the A11, so we expect a big increase in endurance. It seems almost certain to include a glass back and a fingerprint sensor to give the budget phone a premium look. Fortunately, Samsung’s Galaxy A12 goes against the trend and opts for a matte finish. I also appreciate the raised diagonal ribbing, as they add a bit of crunch to the overall look.
The large 6.5-inch display means it needs to be handled with care if you’re hoping to skip an event. While this screen sticks to the HD+ resolution, it’s still big and clear enough to see your latest show. We’ll always praise the headphone jack, and wired headphones are the best way to enjoy audio on the Galaxy A12 rather than the mono speaker down.
Samsung also decided to leave the fingerprint reader on the old Galaxy A11. Instead, the Galaxy A12 uses a side-mounted option, which is very fast, easy to use and cleans up the overall look of the device.

The back panel graces Samsung’s 48MP main camera, which performs well outside for a budget camera phone (see later in this review for an example). You also have access to macro and ultra-wide cameras for added flexibility. The camera app is a breeze to navigate, although it can take a while to locate the macro button as it’s hidden in the More tab.
Samsung’s One UI is one of the best Android skins on the market today, and it’s as good as ever on the Galaxy A12. In particular, the Samsung Free app is like the Google Discover feed, but with a kick. Instead of just offering news, Samsung Free brings Samsung TV Plus, Samsung Podcasts, Taboola News and Instant Plays in one place. Best of all, you don’t have to spend a penny on it.
The Galaxy A12 is also a battery wizard, at least when it comes to holding a charge. I had no problem using two good days between light gaming, answering emails, and checking social media.
The free Samsung app would be a nice addition to the overall package, but Samsung didn’t stop there when deciding how much to add to Android. Unfortunately, there are many extra apps on the Galaxy A12, most of which take up space. It comes with a full suite of Google apps and Samsung apps, which leads to a lot of limitations. There are Microsoft options such as Office, OneDrive and Outlook. You also have access to the Samsung Shop, Galaxy Shop and the Galaxy Store – how many people really need two Samsung shops and a Play Store option?

The good news is that you can at least get rid of the Microsoft-based bloat, but the Galaxy A12’s inclination doesn’t help much. MediaTek’s Helio P35 doesn’t always seem to be able to power the 6.5-inch display, and switching between apps slows things down. The limited RAM and storage doesn’t help, so you might want to check out the 4GB RAM / 64GB version if you can find it.
Three different apps, two different app stores and two Samsung stores is too much.
Even though Samsung has packed a solid large lens with the Galaxy A12, the choice of beautiful peripherals isn’t always great. The macro camera only offers 2 MP and it took a few tries to get the clear preview image below. You won’t find a dedicated night mode on the Galaxy A12 either, so you may have to endure trial and error outside of daylight hours.
