Update Samsung A12 Gsmarena Review – The Galaxy A12 is mainly made of plastic, a very nice and beautiful plastic. It’s not really a back panel and some kind of frame structure – there’s no “frame” exposed. Instead, it’s a unibody build where the back cover also wraps around the periphery of the phone.
The back is split three to one with the larger top treated to a diagonal stripe texture. We’re not saying it improves grip, but it doesn’t hurt them. It’s pleasing to the eye, though, and that’s a win.

Going back to the beginning, there is a quad camera island that was not big enough to fit a flash, which was placed under the camera cluster. As for the glass itself, Samsung doesn’t say anything about the type used in the A12, and Corning doesn’t mention it in its database.
Going around the sides of the phone, we find the fingerprint reader/power button combination on the right. Located a little above the midpoint, it’s a little too high for an “average” index finger to reach, but a little grip adjustment will get you there. There are also no problems for the right thumb of the same middle person.
At the top on the opposite side of the A12 is where you’ll find the SIM slot. It’s our favorite type, which allows you to use two nano SIMs and a microSD card to expand storage at the same time.

Overall, we like the build of the Galaxy A12. The textured back is a breath of fresh air, the plastic feels nice to the touch, and the triple card slot wins points for versatility. The screen coating leaves a little to be desired, but that’s it. Our Galaxy A12 review unit runs Android 10 with Samsung’s One UI 2.5 on top. It’s a shame that there isn’t Android 11 with One UI 3.0 on the A12 yet, but hopefully it will get an update eventually.
A UI has been very consistent from phone to phone and between versions, so not much is missing from the A12 to begin with, v2.5 or otherwise. The lock screen is a familiar sight with a couple of shortcuts in the lower corners and notification icons below a clock. This being an LCD equipped phone, it does not support the Always-On Display.

For unlocking, the side-mounted fingerprint sensor is the most obvious choice. It takes a reasonable number of taps to set up and works well for the left index finger and right thumb.
As with other such implementations, you run the risk of activating the sensor from any skin contact just by having the phone in your pocket, resulting in a locked phone and an inoperable sensor once you take it out for use. If you suffer more often than you want, you can make the sensor activate just by pressing the button; otherwise, no click is necessary.
Alternatively, there is facial recognition. It’s camera-based only, with no 3D face scanning, but it still offers a convenient (if not as secure) way to access your home screen.

Gesture navigation is available, and you can choose it during the initial setup process or later. A system-wide dark mode is also normal.
What’s missing from the A12, similar to other low-end Galaxies, are bezels. Otherwise, the software package is similar to other Samsung phones, with the built-in Gallery app, file manager and Samsung browser. An FM radio app is also included, although you need to plug in headphones to act as an antenna; some phones have a built-in FM antenna.
Inside the Galaxy A12, there is a modest Mediatek Helio P35 chipset. Its eight-core CPU uses only Cortex-A53 cores, four of them with a frequency of up to 2.35 GHz, the other four with a limit of 1.8 GHz. That’s better than smaller Snapdragon 450 Galaxies like the A02s/M02s, which are capped at 1.8GHz across all 8 cores.
The PowerVR GE8320 GPU used in the Helio P35 can be found in other Helios – for example the G25 and G35 – and consequently in many devices focused on the budget.

The Galaxy A12 comes in different RAM/storage configurations, covering a wide range: from 3GB/32GB to 6GB/128GB. Our review unit is in the 4GB/128GB version.
The modest nature of the Galaxy A12’s chips is quickly revealed on GeekBench, where it sits behind the charts. We added a Nokia 2.4 for context to make the A12 a little better. Potential competitors like the Realme 7 or Redmi 9/9T are much more powerful, and even the Realme 7i and Poco M3 are comfortably ahead.
This remains the case on Antutu, where the Poco M3 and the Realme 7i post numbers 70% higher than the A12.
The GPU is making a comeback of sorts, aided by the display’s indulgent 720p resolution. In the GFXBench screen tests, the Galaxy A12 manages to top half of the charts and even beats the Poco M3 for fps, but not the Realme 7i.

Looking at the spec sheet of the Galaxy A12, we know not to expect much from it in benchmarks, so the lackluster results here are not surprising. They are not just benchmarks. We also had some problems in regular use. All in all, if you’re looking for high performance or better future-proofing, the Galaxy A12 might not be a great choice. The Galaxy A12 is Samsung’s answer to the Redmis and Realmes of the world: a budget offer that tries to put in as much phone as possible at a low price. So how does it compare to the competition?
The Redmi Note 9 is the first that comes to mind, and it is very much on par in terms of price. You’ll get slightly better battery life from the Redmi and slightly faster charging, plus a higher resolution display, although those don’t seem to be the deciding factors on their own. The performance of the camera is very similar in general, so it will not help to solve it. However, the Redmi Note 9 has a more powerful chipset, and this fact alone is enough to ensure a victory for the Redmi.
Not exactly Xiaomi, but kind of Xiaomi, the Poco M3 is another viable option, and one that comes even cheaper than the A12. You’ll get a FullHD screen and more RAM for your dollar, more stereo speakers, longer battery life and better performance. However, the Galaxy is an ultra-wide front camera.
The Realme 7 (non-5G) is about 15% more expensive than the Galaxy A12, but we think it can justify the premium with its FullHD 90Hz display, a much more powerful chipset and a much faster charge (long-lasting battery as great to start with). ).
