The Samsung Galaxy A01 uses a 5.7-inch Infinity-V display, characterized by a V-shaped notch above. The rear part is decorated with a plastic panel on which there is a vertical dual camera. The phone is powered by an octa-core chipset paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, although microSD cards up to 512GB are supported. A 3000 mAh battery keeps the lights on.

If you have $100 to spend on a phone, you need one that covers everything. Fortunately, the Galaxy A01 can do just that.

The Galaxy A01 is a simple budget Android phone that is the cheapest member of Samsung’s A series of budget phones. At $150 (though we’ve seen it on sale for as much as $100 unlocked from Samsung), the phone’s basic hardware and features — like its simple design and low-resolution display — aren’t much to get excited about. But the handset covers the basics enough that, for its low price, it should be a decent device for taking photos, checking email, watching videos and, of course, making calls.

Thanks to better camera specs and an updated operating system, I prefer the Galaxy A01 over the 2019 Motorola Moto E6 and 2018 Moto G6, which can now be found for $100 to $150. However, the A01 lasted just under 12 hours in Our battery tests, so if you want something with more juice and can spend $100 more, consider the Moto G Power. With a triple rear camera system and a sharper display, the G Power lasted more than 24 hours during our battery tests.

The A01 has a 5.7-inch LCD screen. While watching videos is fine, the phone’s 720p resolution means I can’t watch videos at the crisper 1080p resolution that many YouTube videos can be viewed at. Some of the icons on the screen (like the camera) also look fuzzy when you look closely, and in general, the LCD screen is not as vibrant and rich as, for example, the Galaxy A51’s OLED screen.

Slim and small enough to navigate with one hand, the A01 has a teardrop notch for its front camera that makes it look stylish. At the top is the headphone jack, and on the back of the phone are two small slots for the audio speaker grill. This is something to consider; When you put the phone down to watch a video, the sound will be slightly muffled compared to the surface it is resting on. When I put it on the table, I didn’t feel much difference compared to when I was holding the phone in my hand, but when I put the A01 on the bed to watch a video, the sound was still a bit muffled.

The Galaxy A01 camera takes clear, colorful photos with sufficient lighting, and the red and green hues are particularly prominent in some images. There were some pictures where the sky was overexposed and shaded white. Later in the evening, I was able to get a good shot of the blue sky, with the foreground and subject evenly exposed. The camera has an 8X digital zoom which is decent for getting more detail from distant objects, but the image quality gets more blurry and pale the closer you zoom.

Live focus for portrait shots is also really inconsistent. While some images turned out well, some others had the foreground or subject blurred instead of the background, even after I made sure the effect was ready to go. Samsung said it is looking into the issue and I will update the review when I hear back.

The camera can record 1080p video. Video quality is clear and sharp enough, but the phone doesn’t have optical image stabilization, so the footage won’t be super smooth if you’re moving around a lot.

Speaking of photos, you’ll probably need to use the Google Photos cloud service to store your photos and videos, or invest in a microSD card. The phone has only 16 GB of internal memory, almost half of which is occupied by the OS and applications. My review unit is from Verizon and comes with many preloaded apps. When I first turned it on, and I hadn’t taken any photos or downloaded my own apps, it only had 4.9GB of usable memory. After uninstalling as much as I could (there were several apps I couldn’t delete, including a bunch of Verizon apps), I was down to about 6.8GB. Again, the phone has expandable memory up to 512GB, so I recommend this route for built-in storage.

If you want to shoot a lot of photos and videos with the A01, invest in more storage. Angela Lang/

Equipped with a Snapdragon 439 processor, the A01 works fast enough for the most part. There were times when I noticed it was faster to close apps and launch the camera even than the Galaxy A51, which has a more advanced processor. But sometimes I noticed that the A01 took a few moments to do some things, like open certain apps (Geekbench 4 in particular took a long time to launch). It’s not enough to throw the phone out the window, but if you want a lightning-fast user experience, this isn’t the phone for you.

The benchmark results are also on par with my real-life observations, with the Galaxy A01’s Geekbench 4 and 3DMark’s Slingshot Unlimited scores matching the G6’s results from two years ago. Newer budget phones, like the Galaxy A51 and Moto G Power, easily beat the A01 with their more advanced processors. (Note that I couldn’t download the Geekbench 5 or 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited tests to the phone.)

Powered by a 3000 mAh battery, the phone can last a full working day with light usage. This includes watching videos, taking photos and browsing the web for several hours a day. During continuous video playback testing in airplane mode, the phone lasted an average of 11 hours and 47 minutes. That’s a good run time (and it’s more than, say, last year’s Pixel 4, which initially sold for $800, mind you, and only lasted 10 hours). But both the A01 and Pixel 4 have one of the shortest batteries I’ve seen in the last two years. If you want something more, check out the Moto G Power, which lasted over 24 hours for the same test. We’re also running battery tests for streaming video and I’ll update the review when I have the numbers.
