Samsung Galaxy A10 Review: A Passing Grade

How good can a $400 phone really be? When the device in question is the Samsung Galaxy A51, the answer is simple: very good. As the first representative of the Galaxy A family in the US, the A51 is a convincing attempt to show that Samsung can make a decent mid-priced phone worth buying. In fact, Samsung’s budget phones (£329 in the UK and AU$599 in Australia) even the iPhone SE (which starts at $399, £419 and AU$749), are somehow defined and outstanding. When it comes to screen size and clarity, phone features, camera quality and performance, the Galaxy A51 delivers where it counts, without equal.

The Galaxy A51 is sold on Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, Amazon and as part of a bundle on Samsung.com.

It is the speed of the Samsung-made Exynos 9611 processor, which is the Achilles heel of the Galaxy A51. Performance feels sluggish to handle everyday tasks like waiting for a website to load or an app to refresh. Benchmarking tests support real-world assessments.

The Galaxy A51 is indeed inferior compared to high-end phones like the Galaxy S20, but it’s also up against the flagship A51. That’s because Apple gave the iPhone SE the same A13 Bionic chipset as its most expensive iPhone 11, so Apple’s budget devices go faster. The iPhone SE also beats the A51 when it comes to water resistance and wireless charging, two features that Samsung’s cheaper phones lack. (For a detailed comparison of the specifications of the Galaxy A51 and iPhone SE, see the table at the end of this review.)

Samsung Galaxy A51 And A71: New Design, Four Cameras, Good Price

But the Galaxy A51 has its own charm. It doubles the iPhone SE’s storage for the entry-level SE, giving you 128GB out of the gate compared to the SE’s 64GB for its cheaper model – and it also supports external storage. The Samsung screen is very large, with thin bezels that make the phone feel modern and engaging in a small amount of space. Battery life is also similar between the two phones. Both come in around 16 hours in video loop tests in flight mode, with plenty of lab testing going on. The Galaxy A51 is about 20 minutes longer than the SE in this test.

The Galaxy A51 also stands in front of the camera in the usual way Samsung phones and iPhones are compared: Galaxy photos are saturated compared to the natural tone of the iPhone. The iPhone SE benefits from optical image stabilization, but the A51’s four cameras also give you more shooting options than the iPhone SE. The wide angle lens is what I usually think of, which is absent on the SE. But in all other respects, the image quality is very close, and one in the other in this or that. For more, my colleague, Lexy Savvides, created this amazing and in-depth Galaxy A51 vs iPhone SE camera comparison.

Get the iPhone SE as well as the A51 in the Galaxy S20 Plus for a third of the price. Considering the A51 is cheaper than any phone in the Galaxy S20 family, it’s a complete package.

Side by side it’s hard to tell the two smartphones apart at first glance, except that the A51’s front-facing camera is more prominent and the A51 uses an in-display fingerprint reader. Also, the fingerprint reader is more accurate than the Galaxy S20’s ultrasonic sensor for me.

The A51 is also a bit lighter, as it has a plastic back rather than glass. When I put the two side by side and watched the same Netflix show in the same frame, the A51’s display was almost as bright, detailed and colorful as the Galaxy S20 Plus. Outdoor readability in daylight is also good.

Photos and videos look great on the Galaxy S20, especially since the photo resolution is sharper than in the more expensive models, and because it has OIS, which makes pictures and videos smoother. You can use Samsung’s flagship software on the Galaxy A51 camera, including night mode, and the phone has settings like HDR. You can shoot 48-megapixel photos by choosing the camera settings. When I compared the same zoom photo taken on both phones on my laptop screen, it was easy to see where the Galaxy S20 was superior. In other photos, photos of local flowers next to me walking or my dinner looked good.

I appreciate that the Galaxy A51 has a great picture while the Galaxy S20 fades when you get too close. In some situations, it’s very easy to get excellent focus with the A51. Selfies are best on the Galaxy S20 but can be used on the A51. In addition, you can use the graphics mode and the beauty mode to soften the situation.

It is disappointing that the Galaxy A51 lacks water resistance. Most modern phones have it, even if it’s a budget device that doesn’t have water resistance or is only “water resistant”. The A51’s all-day battery life lasts from morning to night, and averages 16 hours, 10 minutes after three video tests in flight mode. I will update this review with the results of our Wi-Fi burning lab tests when they are complete.

Fortunately, the A51 also includes a 15-watt fast charger in the box, but unlike the Galaxy S20 phones, you’ll need to supply your own headphones and any USB-C and USB-C cables you might need. . . However, it comes with a USB-A cable and a USB-C cable.

Although the release of the phone has been slow, the Galaxy A51 is one of at least 16 phones released in 2020. Samsung has confirmed plans to make another mobile phone. Samsung is supporting its A series with new models, starting with the Galaxy A71. and Galaxy A51, which it announced earlier this month. The Galaxy A51 has already been launched in India at a starting price of Rs. 23, 999. This new smartphone brings some iterative updates to the current Galaxy A50s (Review) to a new and important system.

According to Samsung, the Galaxy A51 is one of the first smartphones in the Infinity-O series with a large camera. Aside from these features, it has many of the same specs as its predecessor, including its AMOLED display, processor and design aesthetic. There isn’t much competition at this price level, apart from Redmi K20 Pro (Review) and Redmi K20 (Review), which could be an advantage for Samsung.

The body of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has similar functions to the Galaxy A50s. We have an all polycarbonate body that is light and only 172g, and thin, at only 7.9mm in height. The glossy body is prone to picking up fingerprints but they are invisible on our Prism Crush Black unit. The back end is also a bit slippery, but thanks to Samsung providing a case in the box.

Galaxy A51 Review: Samsung Beats The Iphone Se In These Important Ways

The big change is the Infinity-O display, which we see for the first time in the Galaxy A series phones. It is actually the same hole in the middle of the top of the screen, similar to the one we saw in the Galaxy Note. 10+ (Review) . Samsung may not have changed the design much, but having an open screen gives this phone a nice look, which we appreciate. The Galaxy A51 uses a Super AMOLED panel with full HD resolution that produces excellent colors and sharpness. It looks amazing from the front, thanks to the thin bezels all around.

The button input is ergonomic, and on the right side, we have a tray for two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. Underneath, we have the usual headphone jack, Type-C port and speaker grille. The rear of the Galaxy A51 has a pretty good camera, but now there is a fourth camera. The bone doesn’t stick out too much, which is good.

The Galaxy A51 ships with the usual accessories, which are a 15W fast charger, a USB Type-C cable, a speaker, a SIM ejector and a case.
