On paper, this TV has many advantages, but the performance is not there. A solid design, lots of apps and nice features are the highlights, but bad pictures and slow apps are against them.

Now we have the UE65BU8000, a step down from the BU8500 – both are new and affordable Samsung Crystal UHD.
The key here is the combination of performance and value. So, has Samsung got the balance right with the BU8000?
Samsung’s influence on thinness continues with its Crystal UHD series, as the depth of the UE65BU8000 is 25.7 mm. By comparison, LG’s thin 65-inch C2 OLED is 45.1mm at its widest point.
The Samsung TV’s thin side is supported by the Edge Lit display, where multiple LEDs light up and illuminate the screen when it’s around it. The BU8000 would seem to be a prime candidate for wall mounting, but it has a slight difference in connector placement.

Most of the side – which helps with cables – but the HDMI ports and digital cameras are towards the back, so if you want to connect a third source, you might want one of the HDMI connectors on the right.
In this regard, the BU8000 is another Samsung TV that refuses to call attention to itself with a small frame. Connecting the legs, sliding and locking behind the screen does not take much time. But there’s no strap control, and the feet are on the edge, so you’ll want to make sure you have enough stability to hold onto this 65-inch model.
Wide-angle performance falls off quickly and off-axis. Ideally, you want to be in a small area before the color starts to fade. Also, the TV isn’t bright enough to handle reflections, so you don’t want to shine light directly on the screen.
I’ve complained about Samsung’s slowness to update 2022 TVs, but so far the problem has been a lack of smarts. The UE65BU8000, on the other hand, is slower.

No matter where you use it (and this TV comes with both smart and regular zappers), the user interface guide makes navigating the keys easy and fast. Wherever the problem lies, the Tizen UI could benefit from more attention.
The new look spans the entire screen and focuses on creating content to watch, whether it’s a large banner ad at the top or scrolling through multiple rows of content. Among these are a selection of entertainment apps and recently visited places that let you get back to what I’ve watched before.
The smart terminal is divided into parts that can be accessed from the left side. The main area is entertainment, while Gaming Hub, Universal Guide (basically a search function) and Settings are the other three areas (the BU8000 doesn’t support Ambient mode, which displays an image when the TV is in “sleep mode”).
There are apps galore, covered by big names and Samsung’s own apps (its health apps are front and center). Despite the lack of Freeview Play, Samsung offers its streaming-based TV Plus service as an option, and all UK fixer-uppers are available.

For gaming, this TV has cloud gaming options with Utomik, Nvidia GeForce Now, Luna (US) and Xbox Game Pass (exclusive), with Antstream Arcade and Blacknut coming in 2023.
Only three HDMI connections are available, with HDMI 2 designated as an eARC port for outputting audio such as Dolby Atmos and compatible audio. None of these are listed as HDMI 2.1 support, which I’ll get back to shortly.
Other connectivity options include two USB ports, CI card slot, Ethernet, digital optical and RF input for terrestrial and satellite connections. There is no wireless, there is Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi.
Going back to HDMI 2.1, there is a low latency mode that automatically sets the TV to a suitable mode for gaming. And I measured 9.5ms, which is the fastest performance for any TV. HGiG is also included for consistent HDR performance in all games.

However, those looking for a cheap big screen for gaming should be aware that refresh rates (VRR) aren’t supported (the BU8000 goes up to 50Hz), meaning you can’t go below 9.5ms of recorded latency. It doesn’t support frame rates up to 120Hz, which is still a rare feature below the £1,000 mark. Those who want a high-end gaming experience won’t find it here, but casual gamers will get enough performance.

Compare the UE65BU8000 with, for example, Samsung’s QN90B Neo QLED, and there is a clear and noticeable difference in quality. But the first one is thrown into the lower end market, and judging by itself, it offers a nice viewing experience. But its HDR performance left me longing for more vibrant images.
The Crystal processor 4K claims to offer “good and vivid colors”, but during my shooting, the colors lacked punch and energy. I measured the brightness at a low 277 nits in normal mode and window 5% HDR (337 nits in window 10%), and dynamic mode gives the best performance at 334 nits. That’s still short of the 500-600 nits needed to boost HDR content.

Because of this, contrast is not the BU8000’s strongest suit, even with its VA panel, where black levels are devoid of depth and are mistaken for shades of gray. At the same time, the lack of sufficient brightness inhibits the power and white tone of the main subject. Switching the TV to dynamic mode improves contrast, but the problem turns to color accuracy, especially in dark areas where blacks take on cooler blues.
This doesn’t make HDR content on this TV unwatchable, but I know its limitations. Star Wars: Andor’s space scene takes place at night, and I can almost make out shapes and things in the dark when Andor arrives at the nightclub in Morlana One. The Shadow Details setting provides better visibility in the dark, but even small changes can affect the TV’s black level. Adjusting the contrast gain can change deep blacks – but it’s a strong and “small” effect.
When bright content is exposed to light, the front display improves, but color reproduction still has a long way to go. When Geralt and Jaskier go out into the countryside in The Witcher, the surface of the trees and bushes is not ideal. The skin tones are good, but lack punch and take on a purple tint (which says something about Geralt’s pale skin), and his hair (all of it) looks pale and blond. The BU8000 produces beautiful images that do not give a clear picture of HDR.
HDR10+ support helps, but we’re talking about small amounts here. Bad times in El Royale and The Suicide Squad, colors have little depth and range, although the power ring is visible in a flat area – the BU8000’s colors don’t have enough contrast, depth or richness to display a truly 3D image.

The idea of the definition of this TV is not visible, but it looks at bright or dark tones, and there is usually a headache: the skin type and clothes of Geralt and The Witcher seem to be wrong in their definition. There is enough softness to indicate that the BU8000 does not offer the best picture.
Being able to control its movement is great when watching West Side Story in 4K HDR mode. The traditional setting is fine without the art show and the judge, while the strong car setting gives the school dance scene something bright, something shiny (usually in people’s mouths when they talk), shows stuttering in the judge when you look closely.
It continues with the dancers’ speed and complexity as they cross each other’s paths well, but the penalty is that sharpness and detail are increasingly destroyed. The same strengths and weaknesses emerge when watching 1917 (although the film’s production elements are visible). Both movies are best without Motion Plus settings.
Focusing on the advanced technology of the Crystal processor, the Breaking Bad (Fly) episode on DVD has noise and soft parts, but it finds detail and faces well, and it’s a beautiful version – the red of the superlab floor and the green of Walter’s plaid jacket.
