Take a look at the $399 Samsung Galaxy A51 and its laundry list of features, and you’ll wonder why anyone would need a $1,000 Galaxy S20. 6.5-inch OLED display, four rear cameras and a large 4,000 mAh battery for a reasonable price.
There isn’t one problem: Samsung may have entered the mid-range phone game, but so does its competition. And while the Galaxy A51 can claim some of the same price advantages as the iPhone SE 2020 and the Google Pixel 3a, it still suffers from sometimes subpar performance, poor photography that often impresses, and a lack of decent battery life.
In fact, this is one of the best mobile phones; though, as you’ll discover in our Samsung Galaxy A51 review, it’s more of a jack of all trades than a master of one.
The $399 Samsung Galaxy A51 was released on April 9. You can buy it directly from Samsung, or through various carriers, including Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and Xfinity Mobile. Amazon also sells an unlocked version.

Only one configuration of the Galaxy A51 is available in the US, and it comes with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. If you need more space, you can add a microSD card up to 512GB in size.
While $399 is a reasonable price for a phone with all the features the Galaxy A51 boasts, Samsung is running some promotions to make it better. The company is offering up to $220 in credit toward a Galaxy A51 when you trade in a Galaxy S9, Note 9 or larger; iPhone X or greater; or Pixel 3, 3 XL or 3a. With an eligible trade-in, you can also pay for an unlocked Galaxy A51 over 24 months with zero percent interest, for $14.58 a month. For a limited time, Samsung is also throwing in a free pair of first-generation Galaxy Buds with every A51 purchase.
A word of advice to buyers: Beware of alternate models of Galaxy A51 sellers floating around on the internet. If the price seems right, chances are you’re looking at the Latin or international variant, rather than the US edition turned into a home network.
Many phone makers like to talk about how their flagship designs do in the middle of cheaper models, and the Samsung Galaxy A51 has made similar noises. But in a surprising twist, I found that I preferred the look and feel of the A51 to its larger Galaxy S20 family.

There are several reasons for it. First, the A51 is light — really light. Samsung has always done a good job at building slimmer features that still feel well made, and the A51 is indicative of that. Its 6.5-inch display is nearly two inches larger than the 4.7-inch panel inside Apple’s new iPhone SE, but the A51 tips the scales at just 0.8 inches heavier. If you hold the details in your hand, you can tell that the Galaxy Smdge is faster, but not nearly as much as you might think.
Second, the A51’s display is flat, which is actually a breath of fresh air from the inevitable curved panels in every modern premium smartphone. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but flat screen seems easier to use and easier to live with. Other curved tablets look odd (for example, Motorola Edge Plus), others are magnets for accidental taps, which are made worse by palm rejection software (for example, OnePlus 8 Pro). But the A51 is impressive, with super-slim bezels and a display that perfectly follows the silhouette of the body. Those features in particular make the phone more expensive than it actually is.
But it gets even better: the A51 has a headphone jack – something you won’t find on Apple’s cheap new iPhones. Unfortunately, though, it’s not IP-rated waterproof; In fairness, this price point is rare.
I have two small criticisms of the A51’s design. First, while the iPhone SE and Pixel 3a have built-in speakers in the earpiece and bottom frame, the A51 routes all audio through the rear. It’s not a dealbreaker at this price, although it does cause the classic problem of popping sound when you flip the phone sideways in your hand while playing games.

Second, the materials that comprise the A51 don’t feel cheap, though they’re no substitute for the iPhone SE’s glass and metal, or the matte-textured side of the Pixel 3a.
Samsung actually has a name for what it uses on the back – it’s officially known as “glastik” – and I’m happy to say that it feels more like actual glass than the buzzy name would lead you to believe. I didn’t even think about the subtle iridescence of our Black Prism review unit. Normally, such as I order, although the A51 does not fire just scary. However, I could do without the frivolous lines and triangular design on the back, as it is a constant reminder of the phone’s economy roots.
One of the best things about last year’s Galaxy A50 was its AMOLED display – a luxury usually reserved for larger premium devices. The new Galaxy A51 retains the most significant panel, except this time 6.5 inches from corner to corner, while retaining full HD resolution.
All OLED panels are created equal, so the Galaxy A51 screen can’t match the astronomical peak brightness or high dynamic range of the Galaxy S20 series. The A51 tops out at 565 nits of full LED brightness, which is quite high – although you’ll only see that kind of brightness outside, in harsh sunlight. Normally, the highest manual setting leaves you with around 353 nits, which is darker than the maximum 653 nits in the SE.

But then, of course, the iPhone SE display isn’t OLED – it’s LCD. And because the iPhone’s screen is LCD, it can’t deliver the strong colors and deep blacks that regularly trouble the A51.
Watching the final lap of Ken Miles’ epic Ford v Ferrari film on the Galaxy A51, I was amazed by the sun filtering through the trees that line the corner of Arnage, drenching the peaks in warm light while leaving the interior dark. I’m used to seeing such a contrast in flagship phone panels, but it’s not something you see from devices as cheap as this Galaxy.
In the normal Vivid setting – which is very saturated, it must be said – the A51 renders 212.2% of the sRGB color space compared to the iPhone SE’s 111.2% and the Pixel 3a’s 182.3%. The A51’s Delta-E color accuracy takes a hit on the Vivid profile, and the Samsung phone registered a Delta-E score of 0.30 on our light meter, compared to 0.20 and 0.18 respectively on Apple’s and Google’s smileys. (Numbers closer to nothing are better in the Delta-E test).
You might expect one or two cameras from a $400 phone, but the Galaxy A51 has four big ones on the back: 48-megapixel, ƒ/2.0, which is supported by a 12MP ultra-wide, 5MP depth and 5MP macro lens. A 32MP sensor handles proper duties on the front.

That’s a lot of megapixels, and when the conditions are favorable, the A51 can capture a lot of detail and take pictures comparable to the best iPhone performance. Samsung’s Live Focus Mode isn’t limited to people, like Apple’s Portrait Mode, so you can take shots of any field – even with this lighthouse. Overall, the white balance and lighting are more realistic here, although I like the depth effect of the A51, even if some details around the edges of the lamp are incorrectly blurred.
That ultrawide shooter shines in the sun. The iPhone SE doesn’t have a lens with the same viewing angle, and so iPhone owners are missing out on capturing images like this in the background that the A51 delivers. Even the mechanism of the amazing heating apple has gone to throw here, because it does not go back into the condition that it was put in properly. The shot from the Galaxy device isn’t perfect – the hutch on the right is completely out, for example – although there is a surprising level of detail in the overall shot on the Samsung, and a good dynamic when it moves from shadow to light.
