Update S21 Value Review – Access to the previous generation. Like the Galaxy S20, the new Galaxy S21 lineup consists of entry-level devices, mid-range devices, and high-end models, although they can all be considered “flagship” phones in Samsung’s large and diverse lineup. However, with the launch of the Galaxy S21, it was clear that Samsung was more focused on value across the board this time around, from $799 to $1,199 for the Galaxy S21 Ultra, a total price cut of $200 compared to the previous generation of the Galaxy S20 family. What might be even more exciting for some of you is that all three devices are currently on sale at deep discounts on Amazon, bringing the Galaxy S21 5G we’re reviewing today down to an even higher price of $699 for the base 128GB model we tested.
Which brings us to the new Samsung Galaxy S21 5G – the standard, non-plus, non-ultra model. As the cheapest option in Samsung’s new flagship trio, the Galaxy S21 5G comes with some reduced features, such as a smaller 6.2-inch screen and a less powerful 4,000mAh battery. That said, Samsung still includes plenty of premium technology, such as wireless charging and full support for Sub-6 and mmWave 5G connectivity. In fact, there is a good case to be made here for the features and functions that the Galaxy S21 offers that you might not find in phones that fall into the same price range (currently only $699 on sale). So let’s explore these features, performance and more in the following pages…
Update S21 Value Review
The first thing to note is that the entire Samsung Galaxy S21 lineup is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 5G mobile platform with an integrated Snapdragon X60 5G modem. QCOM’s Snapdragon 888 should deliver a 25% increase in processor performance along with a 35% increase in GPU performance for graphics and gaming. It’s backed by a healthy 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of internal storage, though microSD card storage expansion isn’t available on any of the Samsung Galaxy S21 series devices.

In addition to these platform mechanics, the Galaxy S21 5G model we’re testing has an attractive yet compact 6.2-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, a 4,000 mAh battery, and all the premium connectivity options offered by the Qualcomm platform, including Sub-6 and mmWave 5G connectivity, as well as the S201 standard for Bluetooth and Galaxy UW5 (Wide Band) support. Regular users shopping in this price range probably won’t miss it, unless you think it’s overshadowed by the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag tracking technology, which is poised to challenge Tile and Apple AirTags. When it comes to the camera subsystem, we have a very similar setup to the previous generation Samsung Galaxy S20, which we will cover shortly.
However, the Galaxy S21’s mmWave 5G connectivity and wireless charging are probably the standout features for a phone in this price range. The former is made possible in part by the integration of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X60 modem on board the Snapdragon 888 SoC, although Samsung had to equip the device with antenna and RF front-end technology to take advantage of this. Both features add to the cost, though the Galaxy S21 remains competitive.
Like its higher-end siblings, the physical, industrial design of the Galaxy S21 is sleek and sophisticated. The camera bump on the back is less bulky with a chamfered edge that looks nice and has a much cleaner feel to the back of the device. The volume rocker and power/lock screen button are again on the right edge of the device with the SIM card slot at the bottom, along with a USB-C port and a single speaker with a top earpiece that accompanies stereo sound. The Galaxy S21’s audio output can actually be surprisingly loud and full, though it lacks some of the low end you’d expect from a smartphone. Regardless, we were pleasantly surprised by the phone’s acoustic performance.
As you can see in the featured image on this page, the back of this Galaxy S21 has a nice matte black finish that is almost completely fingerprint resistant. And while the Galaxy 21 5G (standard) has a plastic composite base, it still feels premium in the hand, thanks to a soft finish and a polished metal side bezel that perfectly fits its now all-flat, waterfall-free display.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
Speaking of which, another sometimes-overlooked key differentiator of the new Galaxy S21 lineup is Samsung’s excellent Dynamic AMOLED display technology, which now scales up to 120Hz on demand with a flexible 48-120Hz refresh rate. The result is silky-smooth transitions and scene rendering, along with the inky, deep saturation and sharp contrast we’ve come to expect and love from Samsung mobile displays. The Galaxy S21’s 6.2-inch 2,400 x 1,800 display simply impresses and performs just as well in outdoor daylight.
Under the glass of the Galaxy S21 is also Qualcomm’s second-generation 3D Sonic fingerprint sensor, which is said to be 77% larger and 50% faster for faster and easier access to the device. In practice, it was about the same in terms of speed, although perhaps a bit more forgiving in toe placement.
When it comes to cinematography, the Galaxy S21’s display delivers equal pop and snappy pixel response, rendering high-definition HDR video content beautifully. Samsung has also equipped the screen with the so-called Eye Comfort Shield, which automatically adjusts the blue light output to reduce eye strain based on your usage habits. This feature’s adaptive mode will filter out less blue light during the day and emit more in the evening to respect your circadian rhythm. In practice, this feature works well enough, and we expect users to get used to a slightly warmer hue from time to time. However, we think pixel purists like us will disable all of this during the day to keep the white balance right, or set a custom custom timer to only allow viewing in low blue light late at night.
As mentioned earlier, the Galaxy S21’s camera setup is similar to the previous generation Galaxy S20 series, but with some improved photo-processing techniques that slightly improve capture and rendering, and bring some new innovative features. Regardless, Samsung’s 12MP f1.8 main rear camera with Dual Pixel autofocus and OIS can deliver impressive results.

Here we compare the Galaxy S21 to the OnePlus 8 Pro, which has a really solid camera and usually captures sharp shots with reasonably good color balance. However, in these two detailed scenarios, one with complex mixed lighting (Archangel Michael next to the clock by the window) and the other with complex detail, texture and fur pattern (Yogis on the steps).
A closer look above reveals that there is less noise in the mixed lighting of the figure on the Galaxy S21, as well as better detail in the texture of Yogi’s fur and other parts of the frame. However, as is typical of Samsung phones, the Galaxy S21 improves colors a bit, and depending on your taste, this may or may not be a welcome feature. Personally, we think it looks great, if slightly unnatural compared to the actual lighting and colors. And even at a basic level, you have better pixel detail and data captured with the Galaxy S21, and therefore some extra flexibility if you download images from your phone for post-processing.
Then there’s the Galaxy S21’s wide-angle, portrait and night photography, and frankly, Samsung absolutely rocks all three. Samsung’s 120-degree wide-angle shooter excels at capturing detail, color and light variations in a “White-Out” shot, and also has excellent lens correction for wide-angle photography, so distortion is minimal. Shooting in portrait mode looks Yogi with DSLR-like background blur, which Samsung says is now even more realistic thanks to the AI processing algorithms running on the Snapdragon 888. We’d agree; it’s a great shot even with challenging light beams coming from nearby doors. Galaxy S21 5G night mode also brings something special. The lighting was very dim except for the fire and the next room. Regardless, the Galaxy S21 captured it with excellent clarity, color balance and minimal noise.
Finally, as you can see above, video capture is also sharp, with glassy 4K60 capture (up to 8K24p) and smooth 1080p60 Super-Steady recording, along with excellent audio capture. Overall, we’re impressed with the Galaxy S21’s camera capabilities, especially considering the current $699 (unlocked) device, but it clearly has a trick or two up its sleeve.
