This year, the Galaxy S21 series came out earlier than expected, and that brought with it a bunch of changes. The Galaxy S21 and S21+ now have lower resolution OLEDs, no microSD expansion and no chargers in the box. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is what the original Ultra should be: packed with premium features, no stars, no fine prints. But still no charger.

The original S20 Ultra was supposed to be the best Galaxy yet, but it wasn’t. You can enjoy a 120 Hz refresh rate, but only at a lower resolution of 1080p. The telephoto camera was advertised as 5x, but it was actually 4x, and let’s not even get started on the Space Zoom. The ultra-wide camera had a great sensor, but couldn’t capture macro shots due to the lack of autofocus. The battery was big, but the battery life was poor. You get the point.

Well, the Galaxy S21 Ultra makes up for it all. It has a large 1440p display with native 120Hz support, also adaptive. It also brings two dedicated telephoto lenses – one for 3x and another for 10x optical zoom. The ultra-wide camera has autofocus that works for macro photos. The new Ultra also offers ultra-broadband support as well as surprise, surprise S-Pen support. This has to be the first non-Note Galaxy phone to offer that – one for the history books.
There is no S-Pen connection on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, nor is a stylus included. But you can use any S-Pen that has existed, as well as the recently announced S-Pen for S21 Ultra and the upcoming S-Pen Pro. Samsung has also opened up the S-Pen to third-party companies that make Wacom-based styluses, so you can expect even more options in the coming months. Finally, you can keep the stylus in your pocket or opt for some S21 Ultra cases with dedicated pens.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the only S21 model to come with a 1440p OLED display, unlike the previous generation. And even better, it now supports 120Hz with that high resolution, so you don’t have to choose between high resolution and high refresh rate. This new Ultra screen also supports Adaptive Refresh Rate that can vary between 10Hz and 120Hz, just like the Note20 Ultra.
The latest Galaxy, of course, has the latest chipset. All international models will use Samsung’s new Exynos 2100 SoC (like the one we’re reviewing), while the US and China will have devices running on the Snapdragon 888 instead. The RAM has been increased to 12 GB and there is also a limited 16 GB model.

The camera has received a welcome update. The wide snappers remain relatively the same – a 108MP shooter with f/1.8 26mm lens and a 12MP camera with f/2.2 13mm optics, but now with autofocus. However, the zoom system has been completely revamped – it now has two 10MP imagers, one for 3x optical zoom and another for 10x optical zoom with a 240mm periscope lens.
Other highlights worth noting: 40MP selfie eye with AF, stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 6e, 5G connectivity, ultra-broadband support for short-distance communications, fast wired and wireless charging for the large 5,000mAh battery.
However, this year did not start well for fans of the rich retail packages. Like Apple and Xiaomi, Samsung has taken the chargers and headphones out of the box and every Galaxy S21 only comes with a cable.
The Note10 was the one to stop the 3.5mm jack, and now the Galaxy S21 is stopping the microSD slot. Samsung makes up for this with a small price difference between the 128GB and 256GB models – just €50. However, it’s up to you to decide if this fee is enough.

For our original review of the phone in January 2021, we awarded the Galaxy S21 Ultra a score of 4.5/5 stars, placing it among the best phones of the year. We were impressed with what the phone had to offer in the key departments of processing, display and camera. Especially compared to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which we weren’t too impressed with, especially in terms of design.
Six months after the phone’s launch, we were still impressed. Even compared to Samsung’s new range of foldable phones, the Galaxy S21 Ultra was still a worthy purchase. The starting price of $1,200 didn’t stop us from recommending it.
With six months to go, it’s time to give the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra the long-term review it deserves.

So far, the closest and latest 2022 Android competitor to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra that we’ve seen is the OnePlus 10 Pro — a phone you can’t even buy outside of China yet. Interestingly, most of the specifications of that phone match or are weaker than the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
For example, the sizes of the battery are the same (5,000 mAh). The screens are also very similar: huge WQHD AMOLED screens with 120Hz adaptive refresh rates. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a higher maximum RAM (up to 16 GB) and a higher maximum internal storage (up to 512 GB). The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera specs are also much better than the OnePlus 10 Pro.
Except in two areas, the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s spec sheet is still better than the OnePlus 10 Pro.
In fact, the OnePlus 10 Pro only beats the Galaxy S21 Ultra on two fronts: the processor and charging speed. The processor in the 10 Pro is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the flagship of 2022. The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s year-old Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 are by definition no match for it. These chipsets are still monsters though – just not as much monsters as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Really, the 10 Pro’s charging speeds are what Samsung just can’t match. The 10 Pro’s speeds are literally three times faster than the Galaxy S21 Ultra for both wired and wireless connections. This is unfortunate and we sincerely hope that Samsung corrects this discrepancy with the Galaxy S22 series.
