We have often mentioned that the displays of the S21 series are relatively special, albeit for different reasons depending on the model.

The new S21 Ultra panel uses a new hybrid oxide package technology with a new OLED generation, allowing it to offer seamless fine-grained, refresh rate switching and ultra-bright features, while being much more energy efficient. The smaller S21 doesn’t have any new display technology, the resolution is lower, but it still features adaptive frequency software. We noticed that at least in terms of hardware build quality, the smaller S21 seems to have an advantage over the S20 series when it comes to its lamination, such as better viewing angles and a better connection to the glass panel.

When it comes to screen brightness, the Galaxy S21 doesn’t differ much from the S20 series, although it delivers a brighter manual brightness of up to 393 nits on the device. Full-screen white peak is still around 700 nits, with auto-brightness only in bright ambient conditions.
The clarity of the S21 Ultra is beyond any other OLED display on the market right now. Manual brightness is still limited by Samsung to just 462 nits, although in auto brightness it reaches a stunning 942 – almost beating the LG G7’s insanely bright RGBW LCD screen.

If you’re looking for a device that performs great in the sun, then the S21 Ultra is definitely the right choice.
In terms of grayscale accuracy, the good news for this generation is that Samsung seems to have done a better job than in years past. Whites on the S21 Ultra dip to 6423K, much less red than the calibration of the S20 series devices, with overall color excellence at a dEITP scale of just 1.2. The gamma curve also looks reasonable, although it is difficult to accurately measure the due brightness of the APL LG APL, even with a fixed 50 APL and 50% window sizes in the measurements.
Saturation accuracy on the S21 Ultra is great in all but the reds, which somehow don’t saturate at maximum intensity.
Gretag MacBeth’s uneven testing with normal colors such as skin tones works well for both the S21 Ultra and the S21, although here it performs better and shows fewer highlighting errors.

Overall, Samsung has done exceptionally well this year when it comes to color accuracy. After a few years of glaring gamma issues and very warm whites, the S21 series seems to be able to achieve great results out of the box early on in the firmware, something the S10 or S20 series can’t say.
The S21 Ultra’s display is outstanding at its core – it’s much brighter than any other phone currently on the market. With a 1440p resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, it’s one of the best mobile screens in the industry right now.
The S21’s smaller display is nice, though not really in the same category as the Ultraj panel. It’s really nothing to write home about here, as it’s very similar to many other 1080p panels in the industry, with good brightness levels, good color accuracy, and of course it also has a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate mode. While the Ultra tablet is an S-tier display, the base model is an A-tier display.

Color reproduction is achieved using Samsung’s usual natural/bright approach. Natural studies faithfully reproduce the content of sRGB, and measure the incredibly good average deltaE of mind 2 .
Vivid mode offers a 5-position slide from cold to warm. Shifting the mid-point default gets you an average deltaE of 3.2 against DCI-P3 targets, which is pretty accurate, albeit slightly blue-to-white and gray cast.
A new addition this year is the Eye Comfort shield. This is another implementation of a light blue filter that will adapt the color of the display to the time of day (default adaptive settings), or allow you to select a time interval and turn it on at the intensity of your choice.
Now report on the recovery rate. There are two settings available to you – standard (60 Hz) and adaptive. The Galaxy S21 Ultra sticks to 60Hz, which you should do if the phone is set to standard.

Adaptive mode is adaptive. You’re looking for 120Hz when the phone drops to 60Hz in the last few seconds of your conversation. This is the general behavior for most things like UI, browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Samsung’s own) and social media apps (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok), and these are the most natural approaches.
There are exceptions, though, for the most part, I see applications. On YouTube, for example, the phone stays at 120Hz when playing HDR videos, but drops to 60Hz for 30/60fps non-HDR or 48Hz for 24fps videos.
On Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, the S21 Ultra behaves similarly – 120Hz for HDR content, 60Hz for 30/60fps SDR content, and 48Hz for 24fps SDR content. You also get 120Hz UI with touch screen, 60Hz otherwise.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra also unlocks higher refresh rates for many popular titles that are known to run at speeds higher than 60fps. Among them we tried and reached 120Hz Shadowgun Legends, Mortal Kombat, Dead Trigger 2, 1945 Air Force One, Odyssey Alto and Pac Man.
Galaxy S21 Review: Cuts That Don’t Feel Good
And just like the S21, the S21 Ultra has a 60Hz rear camera. There is also a 60Hz cap on Google Maps – maybe Google should put it there. The always-on display also runs at 60Hz – that’s where we want the promised 10Hz. It’s not good. However, this can be a potential setting for burning, which elements need to be repaired from time to time.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 5,000 mAh engine — the same as the S20 Ultra. Its screen requires a bit more to support native HRR resolution. But the S21 Ultra is also equipped with newer and more efficient hardware, so we were hoping to get somewhat similar numbers to the S20 Ultra (87h rating, 24h calls, 10h web, 13h video).
Well, the Galaxy S21 Ultra could surprise us a lot! The new Ultra has a total endurance rating of 114 hours, and independent test results read as follows: 35+ hours on calls, 15 hours on web browsing and 18 hours on video playback. Even with excellent performance in the default state of the phone with the S-Pen ready, we measure a weak AOD.
