Update S21 Samsung Ultra Price Review

Update S21 Samsung Ultra Price Review – The Galaxy S21 is thin. It’s a big, heavy (8.04 ounces vs. 7.7 for the predecessor), boring instrument of a phone. It really is the ultimate Samsung phone to buy when too much isn’t enough. In fact, it even goes so far as to introduce S-Pen functionality—perhaps the biggest difference between the company’s two flagship lines.

This – and other S21 models – are in many ways a logical extension of the product line. Samsung didn’t break the mold here. But the company didn’t particularly need it. Linja is still one of the best Android devices you can buy. It’s a product experience that the company is happy to refine, while saving more fundamental changes for the distinctly more experimental Galaxy Z series.

Samsung definitely deserves credit for being the first to adopt 5G. The company introduced next-generation wireless connectivity and was among the first to add it to its flagship range. 5G has become a useful feature incredibly quickly – thanks in large part to Qualcomm’s massive push to add the technology to its mid-range chips. In fact, the iPhone 12 may be the last major flagship to avoid adding technology as a major selling point.

If we don’t, smartphone makers will return to the familiar terrain where their wars are fought – namely, imaging. Aside from the S-Pen functionality, most of the high-end upgrades for this generation’s Ultra are on the camera side. No surprises, of course. The camera has always been at the heart of Samsung – although the changes have been largely focused on the software, which is a growing trend for many manufacturers.

However, some hardware changes are worth noting. The new S models represent one of the biggest aesthetic updates in recent memory. I mentioned in my original newsletter that I was kind of unsure about them, which was largely due to that weird wrinkle in the 2020/2021 gadget blogs: I didn’t get to see the device in person. Now that I’ve worn the product around the streets of New York for a few days, I can definitively say that I’m probably mostly okay with them.

The big problem is the massive contour cut camera body. In any case, the last time I used the word “brutalist” to describe it. After using the product, I would say that it is quite accurate. There is something… industrial about the design choices. And it’s really strong in the Ultra, which has four camera holes and a laser sensor for autofocus and flash. It’s a big, clear camera bump made of surprisingly thick metal. I suspect this is partly due to the “stacked” telephoto lens.

Samsung sent the Phantom Black model. Color was something the company devoted a surprising amount of stage time to during the announcement. It was the kind of attention rarely seen on something as trivial as a color finish, except for some Apple parts. Here’s a long video on the subject if you’re curious. I don’t know what to tell you. Is nice. It is matte black. I dig the new metal back; even with Corning on your side, the glass back really feels like an accident waiting to happen.

The curved screen looks nice as usual, the rounded corners make a good accent. The screen itself is attractive – Samsung screens always are. The screens of the S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra are 6.2, 6.7 and 6.8 inches, respectively. All are unchanged except for the Ultra, which is unusually 0.1 inches smaller than its predecessor. It’s not really noticeable, but it’s an odd choice from a company that has long insisted that bigger is better when it comes to displays.

The Eye Comfort Shield is a welcome addition that adjusts the screen temperature based on the time of day and your own usage. If you’ve used Night Shift or something similar, you know this – the screen slowly shifts towards the yellow end of the white balance spectrum and reduces blue light so circadian rhythms aren’t lost. It’s off by default, so you’ll need to go into settings to change it.

The company has also introduced a Dynamic Refresh Rate feature that ranges from 46 to 120 Hz depending on the application you are using. This is designed to save battery life (120Hz combined with 5G can be a big power drain). The effect is quite subtle. I can’t say that I really noticed during use. I really appreciate the effort in finding new ways to get extra juice.

Samsung’s new era is also remarkable for where it ended up. The new S models mark the end of an era where the company finally ditches expandable storage (along the lines of the Z line). I mean, I understand. These devices have 128-512 GB of storage space. For most users, the microSD reader was unnecessary. I never really used it. According to the company, “the use of SD cards in smartphones has decreased significantly over time as we have expanded the storage options available to consumers.”

Of course, expanding the built-in memory will cost you. Most of the time, it is always a somewhat sad farewell to a long-standing factory. The company also ditched the included earphones and power adapter, and notably removed some ads mocking Apple for doing the same recently. Again, there is a headphone jack.

In a recent statement, the company presented a similar interpretation of sustainable development. “We’ve seen more and more Galaxy users reuse pre-existing accessories and make sustainable choices in their everyday lives to encourage better recycling habits.” As a result, the box is almost half as thick as previous S-line boxes, for what that’s worth.

As mentioned above, the two cameras are remarkably similar to their predecessors, with a few key differences. The S20 Ultra had a 108-megapixel wide-angle lens (f/1.8), a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens (f/2.2) and a 48-megapixel (f/3.5) telephoto lens (4x zoom ), while the S21 Ultra has a 108-megapixel wide-angle lens. (f/1.8), 12 MP ultra-wide (f/2.2), 10 MP (f/2.4) telephoto (3x zoom) and 10 MP telephoto (f/4.9) (10x zoom). The dual telephoto lenses are the biggest difference.

The device switches between telephoto lenses depending on how much you zoom in. The device performs much better than many competing headsets at distances that require about 10x. While the ability to zoom up to 100x is very impressive for a phone on paper, images deteriorate very quickly at higher levels. At some point, the picture begins to take on the style of an impressionistic picture, which in most cases is not particularly useful.

When Samsung (or whoever) can properly crack the code to turn this noise into a signal, it will be a real breakthrough. However, Zoom Lock is a nice addition to help reduce hand shake while zooming. Random movements increase exponentially the tighter the image. Super Steady has also been improved for video recording.

Portrait mode has been improved. More complex shapes still have problems, but this is a problem I’ve encountered with almost all solutions. Samsung scores points here by offering plenty of options for post-editing images, from different levels of blur to adjusting the focal point to other effects. As with most camera software, there’s a lot to play with.

Other notable additions include 8K Snap, a nice addition that lets you take high-resolution photos from a single frame of 8K video. There is also a Vlogger Mode that records from the front and back at the same time. Someone will surely find a social use for it, but it seems a bit silly – one of those features that most users will immediately forget about. More options is usually a good thing, although camera software has gotten to the point where there’s a lot of menu navigation.

It seems to me that most users want a way to quickly take photos and record videos. The S21 tags below are perfect for this. The hardware is powerful enough to get great photos with little effort. If you like to go deep and get the best images on your device without exporting to a third-party app, the Ultra is the way to go. In addition to being a kitchen sink of sorts, a high-end appliance is optional.

Review: Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

The addition of the S Pen feature is probably the most important – and curious – thing the Ultra has achieved. At first glance, this appears to be the latest — and most obvious — in a series of moves that effectively blur the lines between the two leading companies. Perhaps Samsung wants to further differentiate the next Note, or perhaps the company is content to let the device blend in with the times.

There is, of course, one big difference.
