Samsung launched the Galaxy S21 series on January 14, 2021. This is much earlier than usual for the Galaxy S launch. This may be due in part to the spread of COVID-19. Pre-orders for the three phones in the series began on January 14, and the devices hit store shelves across the US and Europe on Friday, January 29, 2021.
On February 9, 2022, Samsung launched the Galaxy S22 series, marking the end of the Galaxy S21 series. Recently, on February 1, 2023, the company launched the Galaxy S23 series, officially making the Galaxy S21 series two generations older.
If you want the most powerful phone in the series, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is for you. It has the largest 6.8-inch screen, the largest 5,000 mAh battery and the best camera with a 108-megapixel primary sensor. It is also equipped with 16GB of memory. However, it’s also the most expensive, with a starting price of $1,199 (€12,249 / $149). Of course, considering how old this phone is, it’s pretty easy to get a new phone from a third-party seller for less than $600. Note that this phone won an Editors’ Choice award and was voted the best phone of 2021 by our readers.

If you want the most powerful phone in the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is for you. This phone has a 6.8-inch screen, a 5,000 mAh battery, and a 108 million pixel main sensor. It is also equipped with 16GB of memory. However, it has a starting price of $1,199.
The Galaxy S21 Plus is the middle child. The screen of this phone is smaller than 6.7 inches, and it has a 4800 mAh battery. It has five and three GB of RAM. However, because you miss out on some high-end features, the base price drops significantly to $999 (€1,049 / $949). However, like the S21 Ultra, it’s easy to find this brand new for under $400.

Finally, the vanilla Galaxy S21 is the smallest and weakest of the three phones. On the plus side, the screen is 6.2 inches, almost the same as the Galaxy S21 Plus. You’ll have to sacrifice some battery capacity, though, as the Galaxy S21 only packs a 4,000mAh cell. The back is also made of “Glastik” instead of real glass. Wallets will be happy, though, with the phone starting at just $799 (€849 / $769), which can be found for around $300 today. Also, this phone received our recommended label.

Since Samsung no longer manufactures the Galaxy S21, buying a phone isn’t as easy as buying a Galaxy S23 model. Since the MSRP of the Galaxy S23 series is the same as the original MSRP of the Galaxy S21 series (at least in the US), we recommend that most buyers go with the Galaxy S23 model instead.
However, there are several reasons why you might want a Galaxy S21 model from 2023. First, the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus have larger batteries than the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus. Second, a Galaxy S21 from a third-party seller can be much cheaper than a Galaxy S23, especially if you’re buying a used device. Third, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has 16GB of RAM, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a maximum of 12GB of RAM. With all this in mind, the Galaxy S21 device could still appeal to some buyers.
Basically all three phones are still great. They still have very fast processors, great cameras, beautiful designs and great software. Granted, the hardware inside the Galaxy S23 series is slightly better overall, but that doesn’t mean the Galaxy S21 series isn’t suddenly better. A good buy if you get it at the right price.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Review: Compact, But Not Weak
Also, remember that Samsung released a “fan version” of the Galaxy S21 series: the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE. Although the phone arrived much later than expected, it’s still worth a look, especially if the Galaxy S21’s entry price of $799 is still a bit high for your budget.
In general, Samsung flagships have excellent cameras. If you want one of the best phones for photography and video in the Android world, you can’t go wrong with the latest entry in the Galaxy S family. The 2021 series continues this trend perfectly.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus Review: The Awkward Middle Child
In 2020, the Galaxy S20 Ultra has the same configuration, with a 108-megapixel main lens. Unfortunately, in our testing with the Galaxy S20 Ultra, we found the focus to be unreliable, as well as a few other issues. Fortunately, our testing with the Galaxy S21 Ultra showed that Samsung has fixed almost all of the problems we saw in the 2020 model.
In almost every case, the Galaxy S21 Ultra impressed us. Zoomed photos are sharp and clear thanks to two telephoto lenses. Color accuracy across all lenses is first-rate. Above all, the focus is fantastic.
There are still things to remember. Samsung continues to use its ‘Space Zoom’ branding to describe its 100x digital zoom capability with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. In fact, 100x digital zoom results in terrible image quality. Although you have the ability, we recommend that you avoid zooming in on this point with your smartphone.
On the front, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 40-megapixel camera. The sensor features phase-detection autofocus, 80-degree FoV, ƒ/2.2 resolution, and 0.7 µm pixel size. As in 2020, selfies look fantastic with this phone.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Fe Vs Galaxy S21 Plus: Which Phone To Buy?
For the first time since 2017, the regular and Plus versions of the Galaxy S 2021 series have the same camera. Previously, the Plus model offered extras like more sensors, better quality sensors, and even a full lens. However, with the Galaxy S21 series, both phones produce similar picture quality.
These three lenses are the imaging sensors in smartphones. A standard wide-angle sensor is used for basic photography. The ultra-wide sensor helps capture more of the image in your viewfinder without having to physically move back. A telephoto lens can zoom in on your subject without losing too much fidelity.
The Galaxy S21 and S21+ won’t be as versatile as the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but regular folks might be happy.
As for zoom, you get 3x hybrid optical zoom. This is a marketing term that basically means that a certain percentage of 3x magnification is optical (ie harmless) and another percentage is digital (ie harmful). We found that this resulted in quality photos when zoomed to 3x. Even over 10x still produces beautiful images. But we recommend not to exceed 10 times. Regardless, the zoom won’t be as good as the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s pure optics.
