When the new phone was officially announced last month, Xiaomi fans may have had an aneurysm. Priced at $1,099, the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant of the Xiaomi 12T Pro is Xiaomi’s most expensive T-series phone in Singapore to date (and the version we received for review). At the same time, it’s a huge improvement over the $799 Xiaomi 11T Pro (check it out here) for the same storage capacity.

While there are other SD8+ G1 phones in the wild that haven’t officially gone on sale yet, the Xiaomi 12T Pro has technically become one of the most affordable budget phones in Singapore. So what if it’s $300 more than the original price? It is still cheaper than others; this is probably what Xiaomi is thinking.
Now, to further differentiate the device from its competitors, Xiaomi packed a 200MP main camera (Samsung ISOCELL HP1 sensor) into the triple rear imaging array of the 12T Pro, which proved to be a very capable shooter in our initial tests. The 200MP camera has tons of tricks to use with the device, which we’ll cover in more detail.
It is also one of the “budget flagships” with a display higher than Full HD. The 12T Pro offers a resolution of 2712 x 1220 pixels and a flagship-worthy 120Hz refresh rate. It also comes with 120W wireless fast charging to assure heavy users that it won’t take long to fully charge.
However, despite the price hike, it’s still the cheapest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 phone. You can’t go wrong with the Xiaomi12T Pro.

Chinese flagship phones stick to the same design formulas. After a while, they become difficult to remove due to repetitive features such as blocky cameras, back curves and angles, and half or full color pencils.
As the Xiaomi 12T Pro takes cues from the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro, it doesn’t offer any revolutionary design updates. But they managed to tidy up the rear camera housing and made it a bit friendlier for everyday use. Instead of a raised circle around its main camera (which the 12 and 12 Pro have), Xiaomi made it against a piece of protective glass. It should help reduce the chances of the phone getting scratched or damaged when it’s carried in your pocket or bag.
If you use the phone without a case, it may be difficult to distinguish the Xiaomi 12T Pro’s side buttons for volume and power by tapping. The keys are so thin that they’re not distracting, and the phone’s bezels have soft edges that your fingers can feel – it’s even more confusing. The extra cleanness of the camera body doesn’t make it any worse when standing on a table, and even a phone case didn’t help much in that regard.
The rest of the phone feels average in the hand. Classic form factor with curved and flat screen. The sides look and feel durable, the plastic back is reinforced with glass and feels soft in the hand.

On the other hand, the 6.67-inch AMOLED display isn’t too sharp – in fact, it’s sharp with Full HD+ resolution and a high pixel density (2,712 x 1,220 pixels at 446 PPI). Content presentation is smooth thanks to its fluid 120Hz refresh rate.
The only gripe was the slightly washed-out color panel at maximum brightness (900-nits) or when playing videos. Otherwise, the panel comes with all the key benefits you’d expect from more expensive phones, including HDR10+ support, SGS certification for low visual fatigue, and a 480Hz touch sampling rate.
Xiaomi doesn’t specify whether the in-screen fingerprint sensor is optical or ultrasonic (we assume it’s optical because it’s white on the contact). That said, the response time is very fast – even faster than the Pixel 7 Pro’s sensor. AI Face Unlock is also fast enough if you prefer.
It doesn’t have the IP68 rating available on top phones, but the 12T Pro’s IP53 rating should be good enough for everyday use and exposure to Singapore’s typical weather conditions. This phone is no dunk in the pool!

The Xiaomi 12T Pro is dressed in MIUI 13 skin based on Xiaomi’s Android 12. More consistent than previous MIUI releases. For example, shortcut icons are evenly spaced in the pull-down menu, and so are alert icons on the notification screen. You can also adjust the font type and size to make the words more readable in the interface (we used an unofficial font similar to Google Fonts to make small text more readable at a glance).
The 200MP claim on the sensor is hard to ignore, and there’s little more than numbers behind it. Here are the specs for reference.
Overall, Xiaomi’s camera combo is adequate for shooting scenarios (like ultra-wide and macro), but the 200MP lens is more than adequate.
To maximize the usefulness of the 200MP sensor, the Xiaomi 12T Pro uses pixel binning, which combines adjacent pixels on the sensor to form larger pixels that deliver brighter images. You can opt for ultra-high-resolution 200MP images (up to 70MB per image) or rely on standard 16-in-1 binning for consistent and consistent 12MP images.

Of course, the full 200MP is only important if you plan to print poster versions of these images. The standard 16-in-1 mode is more convenient and offers better control over color dynamics and detail retention.
Even finding a 200MP photo feature isn’t intuitive. It’s actually hidden in the standard Camera app under the More tab that takes 50MP photos. You should go ahead and click the “200MP” button in the top left corner of your viewer. This is just one example of the complicated UI choices, which is why Xiaomi loses points in terms of usability (again).
Another advantage of the 12T Pro is “2x sensor magnification”. This method is becoming more popular with new phones like the iPhone 14’s 2x telezoom.
The downside is not the usual detail and sound issues that result from traditional digital zoom. The downside, of course, is that you can’t use the full sensor to take your photo. From our samples, the 12T Pro takes clear and colorful photos, but lacks the color dynamics or contrast control typically provided by phone software.
