Update Redmi Note 8 Pro Review Review

Update Redmi Note 8 Pro Review Review – Earlier this year we had the Redmi Note 7. About a month ago we had the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Xiaomi Malaysia does ship the smartphones as soon as possible after the initial launch in China as a thank you gift for the support they have received. With such a short gap between phone generations, what new features or hardware does the Redmi Note 8 Pro offer?

The phone comes in such a simple packaging. A simple box that only shows the front and back of the phone with a slightly slanted look.

The overall unboxing experience is also pretty simple as we only get the bare minimum with the phone itself:

Without headphones, which, in my opinion, is probably for the best. Cut the costs and most of us already have our own headphones.

The overall shape of the Redmi Note 8 Pro is pretty generic, despite being thicker to accommodate the larger battery. You have a curved back which provides a very comfortable grip and it is also available in different colors. It is now available in pearl white, mineral gray and forest green. My personal favorite of the three is Forest Green, which is the model we received for review.

Xiaomi claims to use Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for both the front and back panels of the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Whatever the glass is, I understand that under the back glass it has a matte texture layer over the green. I don’t know why, but I love the touch, even though it’s very hard to even see the rather dark forest green.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro has almost all the connections we’ve come to expect. It has WiFi 5, also known as AC-WiFi, so you can take advantage of your Unifi Turbo. To my surprise, the Redmi Note 8 Pro also has NFC. It’s pretty rare to see mid-range smartphones with NFC, and it’s nice to have.

In keeping with tradition, the Redmi Note 8 Pro also sports an IR blaster on top like its predecessors. Again, nice to have – and now I control the AC in my room with my phone.

Unfortunately, the Redmi Note 8 Pro still comes with a Nano SIM + combo slot, which means you can install two Nano SIM cards or one Nano SIM + microSD card slot. Many other smartphones in this price range have triple card slots.

All the buttons are on the right side of the phone, which is also the same as the Redmi Note 7.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro also comes with a physical fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone, which I prefer. Xiaomi has hidden the physical fingerprint reader so well that it’s actually at the bottom of the camera array. Very clean design.

Redmi Note 8 Review: The Budget King For 2019?

While many other smartphones have switched to AMOLED displays, Xiaomi is sticking with a more traditional IPS LCD screen here. There is nothing wrong with this, as Xiaomi uses a high-quality screen that is both bright and has great colors. I’m actually quite surprised at the image quality.

And that IPS LCD screen is the reason Xiaomi didn’t use an under-screen fingerprint scanner. I’d say it’s for the better.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a 6.53-inch display with 1080p resolution and a small teardrop notch at the top. This means that the phone is actually quite large compared to other smartphones on the market, but that depends on your personal preference.

When it comes to the main selling point of the Redmi Note 8 Pro, it has to be the cameras. The Redmi Note 8 Pro is Malaysia’s first smartphone to feature a Samsung GW1 sensor with a total resolution of 64MP. But that’s not all, because the Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with 4 cameras:

Redmi Note 8 Pro Unboxing And Quick Review: They Did It Again!

To be honest, I really enjoyed the Redmi Note 8 Pro and its cameras. Let’s take a look at the photos taken by this phone. You can see the full resolution along with metadata in our Shutterfly album here.

It must be said that Xiaomi has really optimized the Redmi Note 8 Pro camera. I have no idea how Xiaomi managed it, but the Redmi Note 8 Pro can take 64MP photos and process them faster than their own Xiaomi Mi 9, which has a Sony IMX586 – 48MP sensor. My mind was blown!

Taking 64MP photos means that HDR and “AI” are turned off. Images also become very dark. At least we can use the 64MP camera in manual mode.

But I would like Xiaomi to abandon the depth sensor altogether. The Redmi Note 8 Pro is almost perfect, but I wish it had a telephoto camera. But the argument here is that there’s no need for a telephoto camera because you can take a 64MP photo and still crop it. But I want to say something else – the image will not look and feel the same.

Redmi Note 8 Review: An All Rounder Smartphone In The Under Rs 10,000 Price Bracket

The ultra-wide-angle camera isn’t surprising or different from what we’ve seen before. Images from the ultra-wide angle camera look good, and I’m fine with that.

Then the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a macro camera with autofocus! This makes the macro camera much easier to use compared to the HONOR 20, HONOR 20 Pro and Nova 5T (essentially copycats of the HONOR 20) and the realme 5 series of smartphones.

This autofocus is truly a blessing here as all my macro shots are just laser sharp. But taking a 64MP shot and cropping it is actually even better than a macro camera. So I’m not sure why there is a macro camera at all.

This is not good. No stabilization for both cameras – EIS or OIS. The 64MP main camera can only record in 4K 30fps or 1080p at 120fps, while the ultra-wide camera can only record in 1080p 30fps.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro Review With Pros And Cons

At the moment, Xiaomi is already rolling out the MIUI 11 update for many of its smartphones. We are not sure when this phone will receive this update, but at the time of this review, it is running on Android 9.0 Pie with MIUI 10.

This is the stock MIUI 10 we’ve seen on many other Xiaomi smartphones we’ve reviewed. Take, for example, Mi 9, Redmi Note 7 or Mi 9T Pro. The Redmi Note 8 Pro works exactly the same in terms of software. There is one difference – the user interface of the camera. Xiaomi has finally integrated the ultra-wide-angle camera into the zoom slider. Kept them for quite a long time.

The only real extras I can see here are digital well-being and the aptly named “special features” in the settings menu. Among these “special features” is a new game accelerator. It’s basically Xiaomi’s version of game launchers/managers found in other smartphones (eg Armory Crate on ROG Phone 2, Game Launcher on all Samsung smartphones). It also helps to clean up the home screen since MIUI doesn’t have an app bar.

Here’s a really cool thing to try. The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a MediaTek chipset. Before you jump to the comments section below and complain, bear with us for a while as the Redmi Note 8 Pro uses a high-end MediaTek chipset.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Review: Still A Best Buy?

Yes, no joke. The MediaTek Helio G90T is a serious performer and outperforms most non-flagship chipsets on the market. The only chipset the MediaTek Helio G90T couldn’t beat was the Snapdragon 730 found in the Galaxy A80.

Going in, I didn’t expect the MediaTek Helio G90T to be such a powerful chipset. In that sense, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is technically more powerful than the Mi 9T, which also uses the Snapdragon 730 chipset. Now that’s just amazing.

Apparently, this chipset runs any game we throw at it without any issues. If you want to know more about the gaming capabilities of Redmi Note 8 Pro, you can click here to know more.

Despite this good performance, we don’t feel that the Redmi Note 8 Pro heats up. Just a little warmer than usual, that’s all.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro Review With Pros And Cons

There’s only one thing I can say about the MediaTek Helio G90T: with brute force for good performance comes a lot of inefficiency – and that’s exactly what we saw with the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Despite the thicker body for the 4,500mAh battery, the Redmi Note 8 Pro’s battery life is disappointing at best.

It didn’t even hit the 10-hour mark in our battery life test, which just goes to show how inefficient the chipset is. But we wonder where that energy went, since the phone doesn’t actually heat up
