The Chinese manufacturer has mastered the world of affordable smartphones, offering plenty of return for your hard earned money without much effort. Along with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro, Pixel 4a, OnePlus Nord and iPhone SE are tough competitors in terms of price performance. Despite its suggested retail price of just €269.90 ($318), this mid-range and decent sized smartphone offers many of the features found on the more expensive models of the aforementioned competitors. Thanks to its huge 6.67-inch screen with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and a long-lasting 5,020 mAh battery, the Redmi Note 9 Pro is especially recommended as a multimedia smartphone. Two things in particular shouldn’t bother you in the first place: the size and weight of the handset. Despite the large hands, it’s hard to manipulate the bezel-less screen with just one hand, and balancing the 209-gram device on your little finger isn’t a pleasant experience either. From a low-cost perspective, a little finger acrobatics or two-handed manipulation would be a decent deal.

The Xiaomi Note 9 Pro has a boneless shape where it sticks out like a monolith from the packaging and the large size is evident thanks to the glass and plastic shell. 250 ($294) ), which is a case in point proving that a phone at this price point doesn’t come cheap. The size of this device does not hide the fact that it is huge in every way and weighing 209 grams, this 6.67-inch smartphone is also heavy enough to provide a high-quality experience. The buttons on the Redmi Note 9 Pro give a mediocre impression. The volume rocker is rather spongy while the power buttons (which come with a built-in fingerprint sensor) feel a bit less tactile than the standard buttons. Despite the processing power, this smartphone does not have any IP certification. A precise and noisy vibration motor contributes to an overall high-quality impression.

When Redmi Note 9 Pro was released in the German market in May 2020, OnePlus Nord and Pixel 4a were just rumors. However, this Xiaomi smartphone still stands out with its Snapdragon 720G processor, huge 6 GB RAM and quad camera setup. The hardware is enough to keep a mid-range smartphone competitive even after a few months.

With a fairly reasonable ratio in processor and screen compared to Nord, Xiaomi has dropped more than 100 euros and gives you three cameras – more than Pixel 4a. Fast AC WLAN connectivity, Bluetooth 5.0 and fast charging also make the Note 9 Pro a good candidate for a mid-range smartphone. Equipped with NFC, through which you can pay wirelessly through Google Play, an IR blaster is also included. With the latter, the Note 9 Pro can be used as a remote control for your TV or various Xiaomi products.
There is nothing to criticize in terms of overall performance. Call of Duty: Mobile runs smoothly at high graphics settings, but the Redmi Note 9 radiates a significant amount of heat. The Android 10 operating system requirement that Xiaomi uses with the MIUI 11 user interface is not an issue for this smartphone. Although the operating system uses free animations (at least compared to stock Android), everything runs smoothly and quickly.
Multitasking is also no problem thanks to the Snapdragon 720G chipset. YouTube videos can be played side-by-side with the other apps in the review without any stuttering or loading times. Redmi Note 9 Pro uses 6 GB RAM, where the performance of the processor is said to be especially beneficial to the artificial intelligence of the Xiaomi camera.
The Redmi Note 9 Pro has a noticeable protrusion on the back, which houses the camera. The glass and plastic components are centered and wide enough so that the smartphone doesn’t move back and forth too much. It is placed on its back on the table. What’s even more interesting is this: what’s inside the camera has proven to be impressive in terms of performance and features.

The AI photography mode, 64 megapixel, night photography, panorama and professional mode is very comprehensive, Xiaomi offers everything in the current camera smartphone.

The results are especially impressive when turning off functions like HDR or artificial intelligence. This is especially true since the 64-megapixel primary sensor has a lot to offer without any processing software. Shooting RAW images in professional mode shows this ability particularly well.

Redmi Note 9 Pro Review: So Good That It Catches Up With Even More Expensive Smartphones
However, the weaknesses of the ultra-wide-angle sensor will soon be revealed. Despite having a decent amount of resolution at 8 megapixels, it can’t keep up with the main sensor in terms of sharpness and noise behavior. However, Xiaomi deserves praise on this point. The manufacturer does not use a 2-megapixel sensor as an additional sensor for its quad-camera setup. Unfortunately, this is a common practice in the mid- and low-end segments as part of a cost-effective configuration that doesn’t detract from the ability to advertise a three or four-camera setup. As such, the quad-camera setup on the back of the Note 9 Pro is really useful for everyday use.
With a capacity of 5,020 mAh, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro has a larger battery capacity than some tablets. It gives the device a full day of performance in actual use and then some. The manufacturer itself claims up to 33 hours of calling, up to 16 hours of navigation and up to 13 hours of gaming. All the stated results seem realistic in reality.
In daily use, you rarely drive the 15 and a half hours from Berlin to Rome with a full battery, and with such a large battery, you can basically rest. If you charge your phone every night, you should have no problem with running out of battery the next day. If you are on the road for two days, you can use your phone with caution for two days. Xiaomi includes a 30-watt power supply with fast charging for the larger battery. In our review, the smartphone recharged to 50% in 20 minutes. It is especially useful for everyday use if you are a phone user for that particular day.
Despite its excellent workmanship, I’m a bit surprised that the Note 9 Pro doesn’t come with any IP certification. Therefore, it is not possible to guarantee that dust and water will not enter your smartphone during daily use. This may be due to the 3.5mm headphone port, which has always been a barrier for manufacturers to seal off water and dust. However, the lack of water and dust resistance is not uncommon in the price range.
