For Xiaomi, this lineup is their comfort zone. Realme has been bombing this segment for quite some time now, and the Note series is going strong. Certainly, Xiaomi has consolidated the entry-level and mid-range segment and is not solely dependent on the Note-series, which still plays an important role in maintaining its brand image and market presence.

Redmi Note 8 Pro Review — The Mid Range King Returns?
The color we got is officially called Shadow Black and it shares DNA with the Mi A3. Both have the same reflective glass back with slightly curved corners. However, I would like to bring up Xiaomi’s build quality as well. The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a great design, but at the moment it feels average or mainstream.
In fact, this is how Xiaomi uses scale features to keep prices down and be as competitive as possible. The speaker grill, USB-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack are located at the bottom, while the classic IR blaster is at the top. The right side houses the microSD and SIM card tray slots, while the left side houses the power button and volume rocker.
The rear has a vertical camera array that includes four cameras and a fingerprint scanner. Surprisingly, the fingerprint scanner is actually in-line and very close to the lens. I always wipe the lens cover when trying to hold the scanner. It’s really a strange place to put the fingerprint scanner, but on the bright side, I got used to it after a few days and it became an unbearable nuisance.
The camera bump is large and centered, making the phone wobbly when placed on a table. The pump makes it easy to get your finger into the scanner, so I’m not complaining.

Unlike other offerings, this is the first phone in the series to get IP52 water and dust resistance rating. I haven’t tried soaking it in a glass of water, but in a humid city like Mumbai, the rating is definitely appreciated for maximum peace of mind.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a 6.5-inch Full HD+ display, but it’s LCD. The Mi A3, at a slightly lower price point, has an AMOLED panel, which is a bummer for many. However, don’t judge a phone based on specs. The display is bright enough and can be easily used in direct sunlight. Even when I suddenly switch from an AMOLED panel, the colors are well saturated and never washed out.
So, even if this is a corner for Xiaomi, the ultimate experience is definitely not compromised. Since it is an LCD panel, it does not support an in-display fingerprint scanner and includes a physical one on the back. The Mi A3 had a very weak scanner, and I’m glad a body is included – it’s a win for everyone.
There is a small waterdrop style notch above the display and the chin is reduced further. Plus, the panel is HDR-compatible, so if you watch a lot of movies or shows, this phone is made for you.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro Camera Review
Xiaomi initially went with MediaTek instead of Qualcomm for this phone which is powered by a 12nm Helio G90T chipset. The Mediatek G90T is an octa-core chip with two 2.05 GHz Cortex-A76 performance cores and six Cortex A55 performance cores running at 2 GHz. The phone is paired with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage.
The Helio G90T is aimed at the mid-range segment, so it goes up against the likes of the Snapdragon 730G. It doesn’t pack the same horsepower as some other gaming devices with flagship specs, but it’s still perfectly usable.
On the battery side, it gets a 4500mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. However, a large battery translates into a heavy phone and the Redmi Note 8 Pro comes in at nearly 200 grams. Since the slippery glass design is not your friend, it can be difficult to control the weight while you rest.
The battery was good enough for heavy use every day. A fast charger is now bundled, so you don’t have to buy one separately.
Don’t Expect Snapdragon Power For The Redmi Note 8 Series
Gaming has been the focus of all the latest phone launches and the Redmi Note 8 Pro is no exception. Actually, it works better than I expected. MediaTek’s previous chipsets weren’t all that great, which is why so many eyebrows were raised when Xiaomi decided to switch.
I tried a few rounds of Call of Duty Mobile and the game starts with the default graphics settings set to high. But maxing the phone is not enough to make the phone sweat. The same happened with PUBG Mobile. During a classic match, there were near-zero frame drops or random stutters. Even with HDR enabled, the phone demanded more work.
When MediaTek launched the chipset, it was heavily marketed as a gaming chipset. However, the phone heats up for a long time. It is not a high temperature, but it makes you uncomfortable for a certain period of time. Also, we still have a 6GB+128GB unit that manages kick-ass. So, if you are looking for a gaming phone on a tight budget, this is the phone for you.
Another key highlight of the phone is its 64-megapixel rear camera. The main sensor is joined by three other modules: an 8-megapixel wide-angle, a 2-megapixel portrait lens and a 2-megapixel macro shooter. A similar arrangement is also found in the Realme XT.

It offers a fantastic camera experience for the price, but the whole experience feels pretty clunky at times. The reason for that is that the camera UI has many features, but their level of polish is low. I wouldn’t say the camera is reliable as the software often disappoints. If you want to take a picture in seconds, don’t trust this phone.
But if you’re looking for serious photography, the Note 8 Pro won’t disappoint. The 64-megapixel sensor takes amazing photos during the day and the color reproduction is almost perfect. It can focus quickly and is always accurate when pointing and shooting. Images are sharper than usual when you zoom in, but that’s only in the 64MP mode.
I was impressed with the macro mode, which allows you to zoom in and get clear photos, albeit with accurate colors and low noise at night. Make sure your hands are steady. The wide angle lens performed as expected.
There are minor issues with high-contrast displays, the Redmi Note 8 Pro then over-emphasizes bright areas so that details are no longer discernible. The AI tries to brighten the dark areas, which works relatively well but produces a little noise.

While it’s debatable whether or not OEM support should be in ad system apps, they should definitely be managed. Sometimes these ads are transparent in nature and should not enter directly into the phone that can be used by anyone – a child or an adult.
Bloatware is everywhere and you have to manually remove a long list of apps hidden in home screen folders. Spam apps like Likee lack moderation and brings me back to that point – be careful what Xiaomi pushes forward.

The overall experience is much better than my previous run on the Note 7, but it’s still riddled with random bugs. MIUI 11 has been launched with the phone, but you will have to wait a while to get it.
