On paper, it runs the 10k segment, except for the camera; that crown goes to the Moto E7 Plus. Like most, I’m also worried about bloatware, and Xiaomi doesn’t score so well there. The first word that comes to mind when looking at the Redmi 9 Prime is “sturdy”. The phone comes with a grippy, textured design called ‘360 Aura design’ which is capable of keeping scratches to a minimum. I think choosing this design over a glass back is a good idea, as it makes the phone feel secure in your hand. But, plastic always looks, well, plastic.

Xiaomi has experimented with placing the fingerprint sensor on the back by placing it in the camera module this time. I really liked the old design. It took me a while to get to the fingerprint sensor without looking at it, and most of the time, I ended up putting fingerprints on the camera lenses. I agree that combining the scanner with the camera gives the phone a cleaner look, but I think design has compromised functionality this time.

The display is also protected by Gorilla Glass 3, which is not so good, but it adds to the “hard” design of the phone.
The Redmi 9 Prime comes with a 6.53-inch Full HD + display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. It displays crisp colors, which makes it a good choice for people who like to watch or play games or attend a lot of video calls. It’s not AMOLED though, so don’t expect it to be as smooth or sharp, but it’s one of the best in this price range.
Priced Rs 500 lower than the Redmi 9 Prime (4 GB RAM + 128 GB storage variant is priced at Rs 11,999), the newly launched Realme Narzo 20 is a competitor here. The Narzo 20 also sports an HD+ display of the same size with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels. Clearly, in terms of resolution, the Redmi 9 Prime is the winner.

One thing that might worry you is how obvious it is out there. Brightness goes as high as 400 nits, so it can be difficult to read or text in outdoor conditions.
I don’t expect much from a camera phone that costs Rs 10,000, so the bar to impress me is pretty low here. The quad rear camera setup of Redmi 9 Prime includes a 13 MP main sensor, an 8 MP ultra wide angle lens, a 5 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. In broad daylight, the phone captures good photos. It captures details, colors don’t look too rich, which is good news for those who like to keep their images natural. The noise in the images is hardly noticeable.
When it comes to selfies, it produces average images. I say this because once you move in you will see some obscure details. In portraits too, he sticks out a lock of hair, which made the image look strange. In terms of colors, they are very close to real life.
The camera struggles in low light conditions. You see a lot of noise, blurry details and the colors are all over the place too. A bright red flag for night shots on this phone.

I compared the Redmi 9 Prime camera with the Moto E7 Plus. To recall, Moto E7 Plus has a 48 MP triple rear camera setup and comes at a starting price of Rs 9, 499. Here are examples that prove that Moto E7 Plus has a better camera than the Redmi 9 Prime.

The Redmi 9 Prime comes with 4 GB RAM and up to 128 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 512 GB via a microSD card. Completely acceptable, but this is something that competitors such as the Redmi Note 9, Narzo 20 and Motorola E7 Plus also offer. The MediaTek G80 chip that powers the device is quite capable of handling daily tasks without a struggle. However, I noticed a slight lag when using the camera app and switching between tabs in Chrome. You will also experience slowness when opening the apps but honestly, at this price point, this is not a deal breaker.

However, Xiaomi’s MIUI could, with its pre-installed bloatware. The Redmi 9 Prime runs on MIUI 11 based on Android 10. Constant ads and notifications are one of the main reasons why I don’t feel comfortable using a Xiaomi phone as a daily driver. The company allows users to turn off these notifications. In my opinion, that is an unnecessary problem.
MIUI 11 comes with app drawer, system wide dark mode, adaptive brightness, themes etc. It pretty much covers all the bases.
I really appreciate that the company has put a large 5,020 mAh battery in this phone that will easily take you through a day. But when I need a recharge, this is where my smile turns upside down. It supports 18W charging, but comes with a 10W charger! Why, Xiaomi? Why?
It takes almost 3 hours to fully charge the battery, which is too much of a compromise for me. At times like these when most of us work from home, it may not seem like much, but once you start going out, it can make a huge difference. to do To be fair, this isn’t the only phone in the 10k price segment with this issue; The Moto E7 Plus also comes with a 5,000 mAh battery and supports 10 W charging.

All in all, if 10W charging doesn’t bother you, or you’re okay with spending another Rs 500 on an 18W fast charger, you’re good to go.
If budget is your main concern and you want an all-round smartphone under Rs 10k, then yes. If not, you can opt for the Redmi Note 9 which is priced at Rs 11,999 and comes with 22.5W fast charging, a 48 MP quad camera setup and the other features and specifications offered by the Redmi 9 Prime. At Rs 10,499, the Realme Narzo 20 is also good, but its limited 64 GB storage (expandable up to 256 GB), 18W fast charging and a lower resolution display are taken over by the Redmi Note 9. A- again, shaking its phones around at different price points serves Xiaomi well.
Xiaomi’s secret sauce of providing great features at an affordable price has worked its magic here, but unfortunately not in the camera department. In the end, it is equal in this category, with enough competition between close price brackets, even from the brothers themselves. If you think you can handle 10W charging but want a better camera under Rs 9,999, go for the Moto E7 Plus.
