There was a time when MediaTek’s mobile chips were not considered on par with Qualcomm’s offerings. However, things have changed a bit after the launch of the previous Helio P series chipsets, and the latest G90 and G90T SoCs have taken these several steps forward. Redmi Note 8 Pro is powered by the MediaTek G90T silicon and is undoubtedly the fastest smartphone in its class. With two Cortex-A76 and six Cortex-A55 cores running at 2.05GHz and 2.0GHz respectively, the 12nm SoC raises competitors in benchmarks. Real-world performance is also impressive, and there wasn’t even a single instance where I felt like the device was slowing down. From browsing to switching between apps and from quick app startup times to playing intense 3D games, I didn’t even see any trace of lag. Of course, 8GB of RAM played a role in enabling this experience. You can also opt for the 6GB RAM variant, and I think the experience should be similar, unless you keep a lot of apps running in the background.
The last one, Redmi, manages it with ease. Playing with the highest graphics settings was a pleasure, and thanks to the liquid-cooling mechanism – a first for a phone priced under Rs 15,000 – heating was also controlled. Even after playing for an hour, the device was a little hot on the back.
Storage on the Redmi Note 8 Pro is 64GB or 128GB, with the 6GB RAM model available with both options and the 8GB version offering only the latter. My review unit arrived with 128GB of onboard memory, of which 116GB is available to the end user. Like its predecessors, you can expand it by another 512GB by inserting a microSD card in the dedicated slot.
The Note 8 Pro has a single speaker at its base, but doesn’t rule it out completely. It’s loud and delivers rich output… unless you start holding the phone in landscape orientation.

As mentioned earlier, the 64MP rear camera is why the Redmi Note 8 Pro is so popular. The Bright GW1’s f/1.79 aperture main sensor is paired with three sensors, including an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor, a 2MP f/2.4 macro lens, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth unit. The main camera comes with phase detection autofocus to focus on the subject quickly and has electronic image stabilization. As you might expect from a high-resolution sensor, the main shooter has a size of 1/1.7 inch and uses pixel binning to deliver 16MP images by default. As far as the camera interface is concerned, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is quite familiar if you have used a Xiaomi phone before. However, it should be noted that the viewfinder offers a 2x zoom option, which is not optical (since there is no telephoto tool), but rather a digital one.
There’s no denying the Note 8 Pro packs a punch in terms of hardware and software, but how does it all translate into image quality? Well, I’ve already compared the cameras on the Note 8 Pro and those on the Realme XT, since on paper they both rock the same setup. However, if you want a quick summary, read on:
If you prefer colors close to nature, you will love the photos taken by Redmi Note 8 Pro in all scenarios. Whether it’s long shots, close-ups, portraits, or even shots captured by other sensors, the phone’s output remains natural. The details are also impressive – in both the default resolution of 16MP and the actual 64MP photos – although it cannot match the sharpness of the Realme XT. The low-light shots are also very good, though I wouldn’t consider them great even with night mode enabled. While it keeps the exposure in check, there is a noticeable amount of visible grain. In terms of the remaining sensors, the wide-angle shooter captures a 120-degree field of view, and while it takes a step down in terms of detail level, the good thing is that there is no barrel distortion. The macro sensor works well too, even if you need a few tries to get the shot right, and you can’t expect much from the 2MP output. Finally, the 2MP depth sensor does as advertised and ensures that there is adequate separation of the background from the subject.

For video, the device lacks optical stabilization, so the footage is not as smooth, which is evident in 4K. 1080p videos are smoother in comparison because it depends on EIS, and you can shoot slow motion videos at up to 960fps. In short, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is a capable shooter that will not disappoint you in any situation, even if it cannot be crowned the best camera phone around the Rs 15,000 mark.

The design of Aura also adds to the charm, as my Halo White unit delivers a unique glow depending on how the light hits the . surface. You can also choose the device in Gamma Green or Shadow Black colors. The device is also splash resistant thanks to the P2i coating.
Xiaomi has also managed to make the Redmi Note 8 Pro very thin at 8.8mm. Although it tips the scales on the higher side of 200 grams, and while it’s evenly distributed, it takes some getting used to.
