From the back, the Redmi 9 doesn’t look expensive, and the matte finish doesn’t draw much attention (especially in black). That’s not to say it looks bad, but I really like the design, especially because of the textured surface it’s on. The Redmi 9 is powered by the Mediatek Helio G80 processor, which is the same processor as another new budget phone – the realme 6i. Given their similar processors, I expected the Redmi 9 to perform at the same level, and after my tests, it did.

However, larger titles like Call of Duty Mobile need to be set to lower graphics settings to run. In fact, like the realme 6i, the Redmi 9 can only run CoD Mobile on low, with no option to select higher graphics settings. So, if you want to play bigger titles, the Redmi 9 will play well, but expect to run them at lower quality settings.
In the camera department, the Redmi 9 packs a 13MP f/2.2 main + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP macro + 2MP depth sensor and four rear shooters. Up front, this time, it has a 20MP camera on the front.
For daytime photos with plenty of light, Redmi 9’s 13MP shooter can take great photos with accurate colors and detail levels. Indoor shots are also good if you have a lock; otherwise, the images will look noisy and blurry.

Since the Helio G80 is capable enough to handle larger titles (albeit with lower graphics settings), I expected the Redmi 9 to have more power for daily use. For the most part, this has happened and apps load quickly without being too slow to use.
While the in-app experience is solid, the menus are not. The Redmi 9 runs MIUI 11.0.4 on top of Android 10, and I found the UI a bit slow and sluggish at times; Of course, navigating the menu or app settings isn’t as smooth as I’d like (even with other menu phones). Hopefully this can be fixed in a future software update as it hurts the user experience a bit.
