Now, I know we mostly feature more expensive devices here, but this time, we have one of the cheapest new options from Samsung, the Galaxy A12.

The design feels like blue When we say cheap, we really mean cheap. The phone starts at $180 and for the price, it’s really well made.

It’s an all-plastic build, but we think the blue color and custom back make it great to hold. And also, one or two interesting things here. We get dual sim support with a dedicated Micro SD card slot and a phone jack.

Just to keep your expectations in check, the back felt a little empty and it wobbled inside when we pressed it.

Additionally, for security, you get a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that does a decent job. There may be an odd reading or two, but we’ve found it to be very fast and reliable.

And last but not least, we have a single bottom speaker that is relatively quiet, but also not too distracting when listening at maximum volume.

The display is good enough The display simply isn’t bright enough for outdoor use, but if you plan on taking a quick message or two while walking the dog it should work. At least it’s pretty dark so you don’t accidentally blind yourself at night.

The panel isn’t AMOLED, so don’t expect amazing colors, but the IPS technology it comes with is at least free of burn-in, don’t worry and still produces good enough colors for the average person. Another thing we should note, you don’t get high refresh rates here and your resolution is 720×1600 pixels, but that’s expected in this price range.

The CIE 1931 xy color gamut map defines the range (region) of colors that a display can reproduce, with the sRGB color space (highlighted triangle) as a reference. The map also provides a visual representation of the display’s color accuracy. The small areas on the border of the triangle are the reference points for the different colors, while the small dots are the actual measurements. Ideally, each point should be placed in its corresponding quadrant. The ‘x:CIE31’ and ‘y:CIE31’ values in the table below the map indicate the position of each measurement on the map. ‘Y’ indicates the brightness (in nits) of each measured color, while ‘Target Y’ is the desired brightness level for that color. Finally, ‘ΔE 2000’ is the Delta E value of the measured color. A Delta E value below 2 is ideal. These measurements were made using the CalMAN Portrait View calibration software.

The Grayscale accuracy chart shows whether the display has the correct white balance (the balance between red, green and blue) at different gray levels (from dark to light). The closer the True Color is to the Target, the better. These measurements were made using the CalMAN Portrait View calibration software.

Camera It just works In terms of camera, we are very happy. Given enough daylight, we were able to capture some great shots with good sharpness.

These images don’t really impress us, but they are perfect for normal use cases. We have no complaints here. And the HDR performance is really good. Shadows are also well-represented in bright conditions, and the sky is rarely visible.

You also get a second ultrawide camera here and it’s not quite as sharp, but it still produces some great photos of your vacation.

Zooming is not something we recommend you do as there is no special lens for it, but some photos come out very well and the colors are very nice.

Subjects are beautifully cropped in most cases and the selfie camera is beautiful if given enough light.

A complaint from us. Night mode would be a good feature to include here because it is very useful for some people and its lack limits us in the pictures we can take at night.

For example, you don’t see any faces here, so our partners had to go somewhere brighter.

And we also get a macro camera here, which we think is mostly a gimmick. It produces excellent colors and captures close-ups, but it’s not really that sharp and we’d rather the budget went elsewhere.

The video isn’t too sweet though. You can record up to 1080p at 30fps. It’s not that big or anything, but the quality is at least perfect for some family videos or something like that during the holidays. But one more thing we should mention, the microphone on this device is a bit difficult to pick up sound when there is background noise, so keep that in mind if you plan to make videos in crowded places or near busy streets. And don’t expect any form of video stabilization here, which might be a bigger problem if you really plan on walking.

Well, put it that way, it’s not winning the race, but it’s not frustratingly slow or ugly.

The Galaxy A12 is powered by the budget Helio P35 SoC. It’s not really meant for gaming or anything like that, so when we tried some Minecraft on it, it was difficult, but watching videos and browsing the web were some of the things it did with ease. We mostly browsed Reddit and watched some YouTube and he managed to keep up with a few songs.

We also found that it didn’t get too hot while playing Minecraft, so that was nice. No pun intended.

You’ll notice that the app takes a while to open, but once it does, it works fine. Having a lean processor also has the amazing benefit of using very little power.

Battery How big is too big? The battery capacity you get here is around 5000 mAh. And this is amazing. If you don’t use the phone much you can use it for more than 2 days. But again, like other devices on the market, if you use it regularly, you may need to charge it on the same day. You get a free fast charger in the box, but keep in mind that the “fast” here is only 15 watts and it still takes a few hours to fully charge this battery.

You get a nice blue texture design, a camera that’s good enough for those family vacations, good performance for everything but gaming, and a battery so big that the engineers probably had to give the phone room in the back.

But we are not sure if this device is perfect at this price. He makes sacrifices in his performance. For example, for the same price, you can get Oneplus Nord N100 and it comes with a more powerful processor and a good performing camera.

Or if you’re looking for something more powerful, the Moto G Power has a Snapdragon 662 that will wipe the floor with the A12 for just $20 more.

So it comes down to preference and what you really need in a device. Usually, we are often afraid of what cheap phones can do these days, but what do you do?

It’s 2021, and we already have three high-end Samsung S21 smartphones to review. At the opposite end of the Galaxy spectrum is the Galaxy A12 (12, not 21) – an entry-level handset designed to offer the Samsung experience, on a budget.

Announced late last year and available since January, the Galaxy A12 isn’t the cheapest phone Samsung sells – the Galaxy M02 earned that title. Samsung’s name is a bit tricky at the bottom and it can confuse what’s between the A and M series but the A12 sits right below the M12, and above the M02. Not all of these models are available worldwide so you may or may not be able to snag the cheapest Samsung in your neck of the woods.
