The Pixel 4a is the return of Google’s smartphone efforts: a low-cost, mid-range phone that’s high-quality, durable, and compact, with a great camera.

It powers the Pixel 4 series priced from £669 and up, replaces last year’s Pixel 3a and 3a XL with just one phone size, taking the 3a’s design and using the screen to fill the front of the device stretches out.
The body is high-quality, soft-touch polycarbonate and feels surprisingly comfortable. The 5.8-inch FHD+ OLED screen looks great: it’s bright enough and has satisfyingly thin bezels around it. The selfie camera is a large hole in the top left of the screen and the screen doesn’t have the 90Hz refresh rate of some more expensive competitors, but it does have HDR certification for watching movies.
The Pixel 4a has a 4.5% bigger screen than its predecessor but a 5.8% smaller body. At just 144mm tall, 69.4mm wide, 8.8mm thick and weighing 143 grams, the Pixel 4a is one of the smallest phones you can buy in 2020. It feels great in hand. This may disappoint smartphone lovers, but for those who want a big screen in a small and lightweight device that doesn’t break the bank, the Pixel 4a is a breath of fresh air.

There’s a conventional fingerprint scanner on the back of the device that simply works, and it does so across all apps. Google’s Face Unlock feature on the Pixel 4 works well for unlocking the phone, but even after nine months, only a few third-party apps support it.
Slightly recessed at the top is the headphone socket. At the bottom is the universal USB-C socket for power. The phone has stereo speakers which are very good. There’s no wireless charging, nor any official waterproof rating.
Google has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic to a greater extent than other smartphone companies, which has delayed the release of the Pixel 4a by several months and means a long time between its announcement and open sales in October . This also means that initially the phone will be available only in black colour.

The Pixel 4a uses Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 730G chip, which is one of the remaining new non-5G processors and a big step up from the Snapdragon 670 used in last year’s Pixel 3a. It comes in one variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
Day-to-day performance was great, matching the kind of smooth performance you’d expect from the more premium phones of the past few years. Switching between apps, uploading photos, unlocking the phone, and more was snappy; Even games like Real Racing 3 performed well.
Battery life was also good for a relatively small and light phone. The Pixel 4a lasted 31 hours between a charge, which is longer than the larger Pixel 3a XL and the iPhone SE (both 27 hours), regularly running from 7 AM on the first day to 2 PM on the second day.

That was after spending three hours on 4G, the rest on WiFi. The Pixel 4a comes with an 18W fast charger that takes 90 minutes to fully charge the phone, which goes up to 50% in half an hour.
Google doesn’t provide an estimate of the expected number of full charge cycles from the Pixel 4a’s batteries. However, the typical lifetime of a smartphone battery is at least 500 cycles while maintaining at least 80% capacity. Pixel 4a is usually repairable. In-warranty repairs cost £110 for the screen or £60 as a fee from one of Google’s iSmash repair partners or through the Google Store.
The plastic mechanical parts of the Pixel 4a comprise approximately 45% post-consumer recycled content, part of Google’s commitment to include recycled content in all of its products starting in 2022. The company publishes environmental impact reports for some of its products. Google will upgrade all Pixel devices for free.
Google Pixel 4a Review: That Price Is Nice
The Pixel 4a comes with Google’s version of Android 10 and buyers can expect at least three years of operating system and security updates, which is good for a phone of this price but still beats Apple’s five years for the iPhone. Support lags behind (including the £419 iPhone SE).
The Android version of the Pixel is smooth and well-optimized, here it matches the version running on the Pixel 4 series from last October. Overall, it’s sleek and simple, and works like most other Android releases, including gesture controls, theme support, and other additions carried over to standard Android 10.
But above are some unique Google services, first introduced with the Pixel 4, that use artificial intelligence running inside the phone instead of remote Google servers as needed.
The new Google Assistant experience is more visual. It uses an advanced built-in voice recognition system to speed up the entire experience, allowing the assistant to understand and respond instantly without delay. You can execute commands with incredible speed, from launching apps, searching for items, and performing tasks. It improves over night and is even better at protecting your privacy as the process is done inside your device.

The Pixel 4a has one of Google’s best single-camera systems. It lacks the Pixel 4’s secondary optical zoom camera, but retains many of its software features, including Google’s industry-leading Night Sight for ultra-low light photography, Astro Mode for shooting the stars, Live HDR+ that lets you adjust the lighting. It’s arguably the best camera you can get for under £600, producing beautiful, balanced and detailed images in most environments. But the Pixel 4a isn’t as flexible as other similarly priced rivals, which come with wide and zoom cameras. It’s small, light and looks great. It’s got an OLED screen that’s colourful, crisp and big enough for most things. Performance is good, the battery lasts 31 hours on a single charge and the camera is well worth the price. It even has a headphone jack, which is a rarity in 2020.
You get monthly security updates, at least three years of software updates, and exclusive Google features, some of which are pretty cool. The speed of the new Google Assistant is a game changer, but if you want to talk to your phone constantly, that’s a different matter.

Of course, not perfect. No 5G version (yet). The body is plastic and doesn’t feel as premium as metal and glass competitors, and there’s no water resistance rating.
